Mm. The Overtype Mode suggestion was a red herring.
When you get back to that PC open a new blank document, type a few words,
and then try selecting a word and typing. If the same annoying behaviour is
exhibited, check "Typing replaces selection" as above.
Then try the problem document. If this one document still exhibits the
annoying behaviour, select the entire document *except the final paragraph
marker*, copy it to the clipboard, and then paste it into a new blank
document. If the new version behaves OK, close the old version and then save
the new version as the old (confirming that you do want to overwrite the
original).
