Having no definitive answer to a question never slowed me down. A quick
DejaNews search for the phrase brought up 28 hits as early as March, 1995.
This is only a starting point for real researchers, however, since Deja
returned nothing earlier than March, 1995 for words such as "any", "smith", and
"the".

I do not know where an older archive exists but for the hard drive of some
folks who may have saved earlier newsgroup posts. Hopefully one of them can
take us to the next step.

Renaming, many moons before the never ending September that we now live in.

Well, at a minimum you'd want to look for publication info for works by
Robert Anton Wilson and Robert Shea. And I'd be unsurprised to find it
turning up in the works of, say, Lenny Bruce or Paul Krasner.
