Why do the voices in people's heads always tell them to do things like kill
the family, blow things up, and generally commit dastardly acts of violence
and destruction? Why don't the voices ever tell them to do things like clean
up public parks, work in a soup kitchen, or help little old ladies across
the street?

One could argue that highly religous folks, who hear 'God' talking to
them, are suffering from exactly this malady.

They do. Go read up on what inspired Mother Teresa.

But, you see, people doing good things don't get the same scrutiny as
folks going on shooting sprees becuase thiuer dog told them to do it.

While we're content with simply knowing that someone is doing good, we
usually look for a root cuase when someone does something horrible.

This is Julian Jaynes's contention, as expressed in "The Origin of
Consciousness in the Breakdown of the Bicameral Mind".

The book is an explanation, for a layperson, of Jaynes's hypothesis
that human consciousness developed recently, within the last 6000
years or so, concurrently with the development of written language.
That concurrency, he supposes, may not be coincidental; reading,
especially for some people, is much like hearing voices.

But the hypothesis is not about reading, that's just a small point.
Much more, it is about Jaynes's idea that, before humans developed a
modern "consciousness", they guided themselves (their brains
functioned) by communication between the hemispheres of the brain,
and that this was "heard" by the language-handling structures of the
brain. In Jaynes's analysis of ancient texts, he sees the ancient
authors' interpretations of these "voices" as messages from gods.

I have heard the voice of God once. In a time of great emotional
stress, I clearly "heard" a very comforting voice from above and
behind me say "Everything will be all right.". I know enough about
how the brain works, and about audio hallucinations, to be able to
explain away that voice. But I don't want to explain it away. And
it was right.

These kinds of hallucinations are characteristic of schizophrenia
which is one of the commonest of serious mental illnesses. By far
most people with schizophrenia never pose a danger to other people
and pose a danger to themselves only in that they may be too
disorganized to care for themselves properly. Indeed, the voices
often tell schizophrenics innocuous things - and only some
hallucinations take the form of commands. Command hallucinations do
not often take the form of murderous instructions, but they aren't
often very constructive. One woman I know of hears commands to get
rid of her money, which she does by throwing it on the ground as she
walks down the street. I suppose this is something of a good turn
for those who find the money, but it is very frustrating for those
who are trying to help the woman live independently.

I have often described the process of hearing my characters speak to
me when I am composing fiction. Naturally, I don't think these
"voices" are coming from God or the devil or space aliens. I figure
I am a creative genius and the voices are part of my creative
processes. There are many theories about the hallucinations that
schizophrenics have, but one of them is that schizophrenics
misinterpret what most of the rest of us take as inspiration or
something of the sort. We all of us sometimes have ludicrous,
absurd, or "forbidden" thoughts, just as we all have had the experience
of suddenly perceiving the solution to a problem without being able
to account for a conscious thought process that lead to the solution.
But most of us do not think that our strange, unexpected, or unusual
thoughts are anything other than ourselves.

I was told that its not unusual for someone emotionally stressed or severely
depressed to experience psychotic episodes that are not related to
schizophrenia or an indication that you are going schizophrenic. I was also
that those psychotic episodes can manifest as both audible and visual and
are not something to be concerned about.

Put me down for that too.

Friend of mine, a Franciscan monk, says that the Virgin Mary spoke to him.
...like, personally. Told him to do good works. He's still doing them.
I can't say I blame him. If a major mythological figure told me to do
something, I'd probably do it too.

Is he nuts? I dunno. But he does good works, and he'll never make the news.

Why do you assume they don't? The only reason you always hear about the guy who
shot up the kin folk because the voices told him to is because his gruesome
story wound up in the news. A guy who hears voices telling him to help a lady
across the street doesn't get the publicity.

Not all voices tell people to go on killing sprees. I imagine that only
a tiny minority do so, but those tend to be the ones that get most of
the media attention.

I've only really known one guy who told me the details of what his
voices were saying. Most of it was long ramblings that didn't make any
sense at all.

I've always thought that the 'voices' were repressed thoughts, and that they had
been repressed for a reason, and so would likely contain a disproportionate amount
of anti-social content. I don't know if this is right, and in reading about
people who hear voices it seems simplistic and kind of glib.

I'm not really a student of this sort of thing, but Sylvia Nasar's "A Beautiful
Mind" provided some insight into this for me. All I could think, at every step of
the way, was that Nash was handling it better than I could.

Here in the East Bay I've seen several people, obviously
marginal, cleaning up paper & debris from the sidewalks and doing
minor gardening like weed pulling around utility poles etc. One
was a fairly young-to-middle aged woman. I was so moved by her
conscientiousness that I tried to give her a $5 bill. She shied
away from me and wouldn't accept it.

She was probably a city employee and thought you were trying to bribe her.

On a related note, there was an older woman (also marginal looking) who would
appear in my neighborhood in Manhattan almost on a daily basis; she would
carefully empty the contents of the trash container on the street corners, and
then place all the trash back in a very neat and orderly arrangement.

There was also the older and very well dressed woman who would appear weekly
walking down Third Avenue screaming at the people in her head. Although I
lived on the 14th floor I could hear her coming when she was a block away,
above the din of the car traffic. She was *angry* and everyone gave her a very
wide berth.

The voices in our heads are just trying to give us permission to do the
sorts of things we really want to do deep inside but would never be able to
do without their help and guidance.

> ra...@westnet.poe.com wrote:

It has always appeared to me that intelligence is a big factor
in the outcomes of psychotic disorders, by which I mean the same
thing, more or less I think, as what the pros call "insight."

There is a sort of folkloric belief that crazy people don't know
they are crazy (and so long as you doubt your own sanity, you are
not insane). This just isn't true. Some people who have aural
hallucinations (or other kinds of hallucinations) know very well that
they are hallucinations. They know the voices aren't "real" and
can resist commands from the voices for that reason - but of course
it is still disturbing to them and to anyone else who knows about
it.

I recall one patient who had visual hallucinations of blood. She
saw blood spurting out of walls. She saw blood on the ground,
blood on her hands, blood on her clothing. And that was about
all there was to it. She knew she was hallucinating. She
continued having the hallucinations so long as I knew her, but
she learned not to react to the hallucinations even when they
caught her by surprise, and more importantly, she learned not
to tell people about her hallucinations. She had never committed
a violent act, and she was in the institution mainly because
her saying "I see blood" tended to disturb other people who attached
much more significance to her hallucinations than she did.
When she didn't mention her hallucinations, her behavior did
not disturb people and she didn't need to be institutionalized.

Insight: it is nine-tenths of the battle. After all, who hasn't
thought "I should murder the boss now"? But we know that is just
our opinion, and generally we get over it. If we heard the voice
of God saying "Thou shalt murder thy boss now," it might be a
different matter for many of us. Those who hear the voice of God
but know it is a hallucination can make the same kind of adjustment
that most of the rest of us do.

Here's my take on it:

There seem to be a large number of psychotic people usually diagnosed as
paranoid schizophrenics with this constellation of same or similar symptoms:
(1) hearing voices that say unpleasant/disconcerting/odd things; (2) paranoia;
(3) depression; (4) disturbance of cognition displayed by flat affect,
concrete thinking and/or poverty of thought.

I would guess that there is a disease or defect or process (or group of related
diseases, defects or processes) that cause pretty much the same result in every
person so afflicted, and part of that package is hearing disturbing voices.

There may be other diseases, defects or processes that might also cause people
to hear voices but they may be much different so as not to cause the voices
necessarily to be disturbing, and the other unpleasant symptoms that come in
the paranoid schizophrenic package like depression, paranoia. and disturbed
thinking would also not be present.

Maybe hearing the "good voices" has a completely different type of cause, like
wishful thinking, conscience, stress or some combination of motivators.

Maybe hearing the "good voices" is a different type of perception, like the
voice is heard in the head and not out loud. Maybe it is meant somewhat
symbolically: the notion to act was so strong and clear it was like hearing a
voice.

Can epileptics hear voices as part of a seizure disorder?

And finally, I had a professor in a religion class who maintained that some
people are struck by a mystical experience in which some aspect of their being
shares an interface with infinity; and, in an attempt to describe in words
this experience which is so profound that it could never be described in words,
may say that they heard the voice of God.

A voice just told me to get the hell off the internet and get started on the
work I brought home.

Sometimes, yes. I have ever been shaking my head regarding some
unfortunate circumstance, thinking "somebody ought to do something,"
when a voice in my head will say, "What, you're not somebody?"

Huh. I have had the "voice in my head" thing happen exactly once, and
that was during a high stress situation*, where I'd expect such things
might sponateously occour. In the sorts of situations you describe, I
usually find myself thinking "Well, I guess I'm somebody"

John

* OK, no shit, there I was.... One summer in the Guard, I couldn't train
with my regular unit as they chose to schedule in conflict with final
exams, so I got postponed and assigned to do my summer training with a
Massachusetss infantry unit. The infantry had about as much use for a
Cavalry man as a fish does for a bicycle, so they gathered me and the
other 8 or so outcasts and made us the Opposing Forces. Each Platoon
would rotate in for their exercises, and for three days we'd be attacking
them or being attacked by them four hours on, four hours off, then a day
off while the next platoon came up. The culmination of thier exercises
was they'd try to take a hill we were holding. We were in foxholes at the
edge of the hill, the positions arranged in a Wedge shape. I was manning
an M60 MG at the point of the wedge to provide fire to which ever
direction the infantry would advance from. The plan they were /supposed/
to execute would have them send one squad up on our right flank, probe our
defences, then provide covering fire for the full assualt on our left
flank with the remaning squads. The first two platoons pulled this off
more or less OK. But the third platoon screwed it up. Thier right flank
attack didn't appear. The left flank attack, when it came charged at us
with no preperation, no covering fire, no idea where we were dug in.
Before I really knew the firefight had begun, the LT on the left flank was
ordering us to fall back. I Climbed out of my foxhole, and found that the
infantry's attack had stalled out at the line of foxholes which I was at
one end. I was staring at most of a platoon of men, who were'nt looking
at me, and were all in a line: if I shot and missed the closest guy, I had
about twenty guys standing behind him to cath each bullet.

So, being a good Opfor, I elected to wipe out the attacking platoon, and
opened fire. Now, the M60 was firing Blanks, and we were not equiped with
MILES gear in those days, So after making a bunch of a ruckous so that the
judges would see, I began advancing up the hill while still firing.
Suprisingly, the folks I was firing at didn't notice me there, in my Mock
Russian Uniform, hosing them down and let me move along. The entire thing
was very surreal. So I'm watching the ground, the milling infantry,
everything I can while the 60 chugs along when all of a sudden it stops
firing. Clear as day, I remeber hearing my then 1000 mile away and tree
year distant Drill Seargant holler "Stopage" into my ear. Without taking
my eyes off the weapon, I started immediate action; charge the weapons and
pull the trigger. /click/ and once again there's the voice of my Drill
hollering "stoppage." Still advancing up the hill and covering the enemy,
I did the next step in immediate action which called for making sure that
the ammo belt hadn't kinked. That's when I noticed that I had burned
through the entire belt of ammo in one long continuous burst and I was out
of ammo. The spell I was under faded, and I loped up the hill when the
probing squad finally found us and shot me.

I'm told that on one episode, Joan Gerardi told God, "You suck!"

Then, she went ahead and did what God told her to do.

And, no, "Fruitful" doesn't mean homosexual. (grin)

Joan tells God that in almost every episode. She bawls him out,
whines, complains, and then goes ahead and does whatever inexplicable
tasks she's been set to do (try out for cheerleading, get your
driver's license, learn the piano, ace your next history test). Little
Girl God has said she's sick of Joan saying she's being forced to do
stuff - she can ignore Her if she wants, and claims most people do.

Yeah, but in the details of the contract it was "Kick the
shit out of the English army which is occupying your country
and generally committing mayhem".

Dear Joan.

My researches uncover the fact that was a pro forma contract which read:

"Kick the shit out of the <NAME> army which is occupying your country and
generally committing mayhem".

It has been translated into many different languages and versions are still
in use today.

When the little old lady thanks me for helping her cross the street, do you
suggest that I tell her "Don't thank me for it, the voices in my head told
me to do it!"?

Actually, people who hear voices do indeed hear positive messages as
well. Some "voices" are quite supportive.

I believe that Jaynes' idea is probably correct. However, I'm not
sure that schizophrenics are experiencing the same thing our ancestors
did. It's possible, though.

There's an interesting, possibly related, new-age idea: that what we
think of as our self is really just a lower level of our actual self.
Our actual self is much more conscious, but our lower self isn't aware
of it. Thus, the guardian angel, or God, is a part of our own self
with which we've lost touch.

Whether "God" is a part of me or not, I do suspect it is possible to
get in touch with it, and carry on a dialogue with it throughout the
day.

Certainly there are higher levels of consciousness possible, and
probably there are beings coexistent with us who are on those levels,
but of whose presence we are unaware.

I've had the former happen many a time (usually "what an asshat"), but
