I've posted this to other groups but maybe this one might also
have some ideas...

On Google Earth, go to:

longitude -3.086137703675076
latitude 55.8943002125819

That's a bit south of the Edinburgh ring road near Sheriffhall
roundabout, about 200 yards east of the gates of Melville Castle.

Zoom in on the large isolated building with two internal courtyards.

It belongs to the Royal Bank of Scotland. It's been there for
at least ten years, but in the last year it has acquired massive
steel gates (projecting outwards to meet at a convex angle, I
presume to resist a head-on impact from a large truck). All
other entrances have been blocked off. Identifying signs have
been removed and the site has been screened with freshly planted
LARGE trees, on all sides (these postdate the Google Earth shot).
Must have cost them a fortune. The building is now almost
invisible from ground level in any direction, and it's BIG.

There used to be a bus stop outside the building for bank workers
who commuted there. It was removed a couple of years ago.

Now look at the larger of those courtyards. It contains five
white rectangular objects arranged in a quincunx; each of the
objects has eight small black rectangular features. The courtyard
is invisible from outside the building. The quincunx is almost
completely screened from view from almost all points *inside the
courtyard* by hedges arranged like a maze. Not only do they not
want outsiders seeing those rectangular things, they don't want
their own staff to see them either.

There are lots of large trucks parked on the side of the building
away from the road.

There is no sign of an incinerator so I doubt they're burning
decommissioned banknotes (an activity that would require high
security) - besides, the complex is far too big to be just for
that.

Okay, what the HELL are they doing in there?

The quincunx was the giveaway: they have built a transmogrifier:

No 1 Melville Gate Road in Dalkeith?

It is nothing more nefarious than a data center, purchased from Scottish
Widows in 2001, and co-habitating with them for about a half dozen years.
At the time the sale was worth about 21 million UKP.

http://business.scotsman.com/6983/Fears-of-system-failure-leads.2246956.jp

The article reveals that RBoS was at the time looking for a second site as
a backup.

They don't mention the equipment in the middle of the larger courtyard,
but heat exchangers come easily to mind. They're screened by shrubbery
because they tend to be ugly. The trucks to the east of the building have
debris arond them, there was some sort of construction going on at the
time of the photos for Google Maps.

The bus stop went away because the ridership fell off, one would think.

From your description of the facility I had guessed that it was a data
center for RBoS. I have been in a financial concern's duplicate data
center, one of three for that organization, and it resembled nothing so
much as a cold war bunker. Non-descript entrance road, building screened
from the road, bunker-like building and so on. It had special features
like redundant feeds from the power grid, multiple-redundant generators
and a battery room to isolate the mainframes from any sort of power glitch.

Information is money.

It is a bank. Banks have fortified operations/data centers. What more
needs to be said?

Non-decommissioned banknotes need high security, too.

Give geohash a try - it's pretty useful...

It converts addresses or coords to an abbreviated URL.

Streetview is still showing the older flat gates. That's a pretty
impressive berm around the whole property. Do they really need the
trees if the dirt hides the building?

Does anyone know how to jump from streetview globe to the next one in
Google Earth? Streetview seems to crash GE every time I try. My GE
is version 5.1.3535.3218 from mid-April.

An interesting question. Could the five doomahickeys be air intake
filters for some kind of ginormous underground operation? Air exhaust
would be a simpler hole.

That's what the CFR want us to believe. But, me, I KNOW it's all part of
some nefarious plan. Just like fluoride in our water, Black Helicopters
and "lite" beer.

They looked like ordinary air-handlers to me, but I couldn't zoom in as
close as I might of liked. Does Google Earth take you in closer than
Google Maps does?
