Now, I can understand in the case of a Shakespeare _MacBeth_.
The entire piece is done in a rhyme. But, now that I think
of it, other movies and shows have just the part with a curse
in rhyme.
Well, does anyone know or have a fairly good guess why?
I mean specifically with pieces that have no rhyme otherwise.

Well, I'll take a swing at it. Two possibilities:
1. Since spells have, traditionally, required very precise actions and
words to work, wrapping the verbal portion into a rhyme would make it much
easier to remember.
2. Alternately, some have proposed that the actions involved in casting a
spell are merely autohypnosis designed to place one's psyche in the proper
frame for magic. The repetition of rhyming would facilitate this process.

I'm still trying to figure out why Jesse Jackson's speeches
always have to rhyme... ;-)

When dealing with incantations and other forms of magic, rhyme adds
power to the mysterious part of it ... you know, you probably can't
think of a curse that worked without having rhyme. It helps remove the
curse from the realm of the ordinary and carry it off to
netherworldliness. Rhyme has other uses, of course; often used in
children's games and then has no dangerous overtones.

They just don't seem to work, otherwise. I think it may be that the
creative energy put into the rhyme is somehow transferred to the curse
itself. Given that assumption, there are probably other ways to get
the same amount of energy into your curses, but rhyming has always
worked for mine.

a third possibility (more of an additional factor than a proper reason)
3. The juxtaposition of a child-like rhyme and a dark curse seems to be
very effective for scaring people.

I think it may be a black culture thing. Probably has similar
roots as the "if the glove does not fit, you must acquit" defense.
Not a judgement value, just an observation. (If such a thing
can exist.)

Makes me wonder about the power inherit in "Fuck-A-Duck", one of my

it to the main tune of "The William Tell Overture" (fuck a duck, fuck a

Better yet, tell him it's the way the aliens want us to do it, because
rhymes remind them of how their sun used to sound. It's bound to
spark a more thoughtful conversation.

Could someone explain what they meant by the phrase, "...Nature points
up the folly of men."?
Note: Cross posted to BOC news groups as well as afc-a
1) go to the Blue Oyster Cult FAQ at
http://www.nettaxi.com/citizens/epc/boc_faq1.htm
(of course there is a FAQ for Blue Oyster Cult, there is a FAQ for
everything...)
2) Off the top of my head:
The folly of men had to do with atomic weapons testing, and "nature" was
"Evil Incarnate, who lay waiting for thousands of years in a block of ice,
waiting to be melted down, waiting to take those first giant foot steps
<boom> <boom>, ...sounds sort like that... Holy <bleep> it's Godzilla!!!"
(more or less, of the top of my head, the live intro to the song)
obWeirdness: Microsoft word, which I use for spell checking usenet
postings, knows the word "Godzilla".

Yes, and, as the editor of the FAQ, I would point out that the link
points to a slightly old version of the BOC FAQ (version 2.2). Version
3.0 is the most current, and links to the most current version can
always be found at my BOC website:
http://members.aol.com/bocfaqman
Version 3.1 is currently in the works, and should be completed in a few
months (I hope).
