Britney Spears Painted By Pop Artist Peter Max
Portrait of teen star to be auctioned online for charity.
Staff Writer Brian Hiatt reports:
A portrait of teen pop star Britney Spears painted by an icon of
another era, '60s pop artist Peter Max, will be among the Spears-
related items sold in an upcoming online charity auction.
The auction will be held on Spears' official Web site
(www.britneyspears.com), according to Marc Pollick, president of the
Giving Back Fund, which runs the singer's charity foundation.
Spears' co-manager, Larry Rudolph, said he initially asked Max to paint
a portrait of Spears as a present for her. "It seemed appropriate for
someone who is such an extraordinary artist but appeals so much to the
youth culture — he seemed like a perfect match [for her]," Rudolph
said.
Proceeds from the sale of the portrait and other items, including 20
handmade porcelain dolls in Spears' image, will benefit the Britney
Spears Foundation, which funds a performing-arts camp for
underprivileged children.
Max, whose rainbow-hued imagery helped define graphic-design style in
the '60s, compared Spears to other pop icons he's painted throughout
the years, including Rolling Stones singer Mick Jagger and R&B diva
Aretha Franklin.
"The thing that they all have is that they're charismatic — they all
have a star quality," Max said. "With the rise of videos, now they've
got to be movie stars. Britney Spears has got that personality."
Max, who also created the stage designs for the ill-fated Woodstock '99
festival, painted four portraits of Spears, splashing his trademark
colors on black-and-white prints made from a photo of the singer.
The 18-year-old star was thrilled when she visited Max's colorful
Midtown Manhattan studios in New York and saw the portraits, Max
said. "She loved the art, and was into the colors."
No date has been set for Spears' online auction, but it is likely to
happen in April, according to Pollick.
Spears, whose debut album, 1999's ... Baby One More Time has been
certified 11 times platinum, will release her second album, Oops! ... I
Did It Again, on May 16.
