I wonder which came first: the title or the characters?

Blake enumerated them in episode 3. Someone said 6, including Blake,
Blake himself said 7 including Zen the computer.

Orac was added in the final episode of series A (episode 13). That
makes 8, but it was never stated.

Gan died during series B, bringing it back down to 7.

Blake leaves at the end of series B.
