Well, I don't know really, but I'd guess it's Ridley Scott in
a kind of Hitchcock-y appearance...

I think your friend ate the wrong kind of mushroom! :-)
Extract from FN:
-------------
When Deckard converses with the fez-hatted Abdul Ben-Hassan, replicant
snake-maker, the dialogue between these two men does not match the
movement of their lips. However, in the BR workprint it does. Terry
Rawlings explains, "The reason that changed between the workprint and
release print was because certain producers felt the original dialogue
exchange [found in chapter XVI] was confusing. The higher-ups wanted
to clarify things and give the audience more of an explanation about
what Deckard was after and what this snake scale meant. So new words
were looped in during postproduction. That didn't really work,
though, did it?"
-------------
And from Chapter XVI:
-------------
The dialogue between Abdul Ben-Hassan (the snake dealer) and Deckard
is different in the WP. It also matches the pair's lip movements
better than any other versions.
The WP dialogue in this scene was:
- Deckard: Abdul Hassan? I'm a police officer, Abdul. I've got a
couple of questions I wanted to ask you.
- Abdul: (speaks in his native tongue, waves his arms)
- Deckard: You made a snake, XB7 1. I want to know who you sold it
to.
- Abdul: My work? Not too many could afford such quality.
- Deckard: How few?
- Abdul: Very few.
- Deckard: How FEW?
- Abdul: Perhaps less than I thought but still more than I can
remember.
Deckard: (grabbing Abdul's collar) Abdul, my friend ... (Animoid Row
noise drowns Deckard out) ... about two seconds I'm gonna ... (noise
drowns Deckard out again).
- Abdul: Snake pit!
Abdul never mentions Taffey Lewis' name in the Workprint. Also,
Deckard holds onto Abdul's collar longer in the WP.
-------------
This is immediately followed in the WP by exterior shots of the Snake
Pit, plus a street cop directing Deckard to it.
My personal preference is for this version (although I haven't
actually seen it on film). To me, new viewers of the film are
unlikely to get confused about it at all. It conveys more of the
tougher Deckard and gives a better contrast when he tries and fails to
threaten Taffey Lewis who merely fobs him off with a drink. (Although
some of the earlier script dialogue that got cut out, where Taffey
goes into all the different licences he has makes this even clearer.)
And of course, there wouldn't be annoying lip flap. So, what are the
chances of this bit being recut in the Special Edition, to have the
original dialogue???

What kind of mushroom was it? I want to know - just for scientific
purposes, of course. ;-)
