Over 460 Macintosh Applications Announced Since iMac Introduction
CUPERTINO, California--August 10, 1998--Apple Computer, Inc. today
announced that more than 460 new or upgraded software applications have
been announced for Macintosh since the introduction of iMac, Apple's
consumer computer, just three months ago on May 6. In addition, over 35
new hardware products, including numerous Universal Serial Bus (USB)-based
printers, digital cameras, floppy drives and scanners, have been
introduced for Macintosh during this same period.
"We are thrilled that so many software developers and companies are
returning to the Mac," said Steve Jobs, Apple's interim CEO. "We intend to
make their decisions a resounding success by selling a lot of iMacs during
the coming year."
iMac will be available in stores throughout the U.S. beginning this
Saturday, August 15. Customers can look forward to Macintosh titles from
leading software companies such as: Adobe Systems, Inc., Aspyr Media,
Inc., Blizzard Entertainment, Broderbund Software, Inc., Bungie Software
Products Corp., Canto Software, Disney Online, Dorling Kindersley
Multimedia, Dr. Solomon's Software, EdMark Corp., GoLive Systems, Inc.,
Intuit, Inc., The Learning Company, Inc., Lucas Learning, MacSoft, Mattel,
Inc., SegaSoft, Simon & Schuster Interactive and Yamaha Music Media.
iMac uses the advanced, industry-standard Universal Serial Bus (USB) to
connect to peripherals, such as printers, disk drives and modems.
Companies that have announced USB-based products for the iMac include:
Advanced Gravis Computer Technology Ltd. (game controllers); Alps
Electronics, Inc. (printers); Ariston Technologies (digital camera, ATA
Flash card adapter, mouse, keyboard, joystick); Canon, Inc. (printers);
Connectix Corp. (desktop video camera); Eastman Kodak Company (digital
still cameras); Epson America, Inc. (printers); Hewlett-Packard Company
(printers); Iomega Corp. (Zip 100 MB disk drive); Imation Corp. (SuperDisk
120MB floppy disk drive); LaCie (hard disk drives and DVD-ROM drives);
MacAlly Peripherals (keyboards and mice); Philips Electronics (hubs);
Newer Technology, Inc. (floppy disk drive and adaptor); Palm Computing,
Inc. (Palm Pilot cradle); Syquest Technology (SparQ 1 GB removable
cartridge hard drive); TeraGlobal Communications Corp. (fingerprint
scanner); Thrustmaster, Inc. (game controllers); UMAX Technologies, Inc.
(scanner) and Zoom (desktop video camera).

Note that this is 3 Months that has passed here. 460 applications is Nothing
in the real world. The number probably gets made for PC and Unix systems
every week. Plus, that's including "upgraded" applications, which may be
simply nothing more than a recompilation of old code.

USB is available on all machines, so this comment is pointless. A USB
product that's made for the Mac can easily be used on the PC.
