Just a note for anyone here who might not know, consummate Bubblegum Crisis fan Jeanne Hedge passed away on October 1st. From what I gather it was complications from pneumonia.

I know she was a presence here on the BGC newsgroups. I wasn’t a user here, but I hung out with her on the CompuServe Anime & Manga forum were we were “sysops” there together helping to run it over the course of its life from 1985 to 2005. We helped teach a lot of folks about the wonders of Bubblegum Crisis together there. (^_^)

At any rate, her website with her fan-fiction and BGC series synopsis articles is still up. And should be for the next year. Be sure to visit it to remember her at jhedge.com.

Her funeral home guestbook is at https://www.legacy.com/obituaries/name/jeanne-hedge-obituary?pid=194064582&fbclid=IwAR1J1XDDnD-sc0NWY3hHgKFW6sL4YkIcFo-KVIwj7W6oJTJA0p3Qyrjp3KE

I’ve backed up and preserved her website, by the way. I’m sure RavensGarage.com will probably want to do something as well.

She seemed to be a user at gratefulness.org, so I lit a candle for her there.

Candle at:

If I revive my Anime Stuff or Anime Stuff-R projects, I’ll certainly mention her there too.

I hope Jeanne is off to that great Knight Sabers "Holiday in Bali" in the sky.

Respectfully,

Damn, what a shock.

Back when I wrote fanfic Jeanne and I used to be constantly in touch, either on this group or via email. We lost touch about 20 years ago but I often thought of her. Very sad to hear she's passed.

Hi, Marco! It's good to meet another digital acquaintance of Jeanne's. Out of curiosity, what fanfic did you write? Some BGC stuff?

Likewise! It's strange to see this group so empty, I deeply miss the heyday of USENET.

I was first contacted by Jeanne on 30 Sep 1995 after someone had mentioned to her a fanfic I wrote called "Nemesis" which she wanted to add to her collection.

I was active here from the mid-90s to the early 00s, and for a time at the beginning I wrote BGC fics on a nearly weekly basis (mostly super-short stories). My longest was a BGC/Gunnm crossover, the most infamous a Gunnm/SM crossover, and my most popular a VGAi spinoff. Reviews for the BGC stuff can be found on the Bubblegum Crisis Fan Fiction Guide:

http://www.ravensgarage.com/bgcfanfic_guide/bgc.html

I wrote under various aliases, though, and sometimes anonymously. My collected works are on this blast from the past:

I'll keep checking this group every so often, for old time's sake ^^

Regarding Jeanne Hedge's Bubblegum Crisis web site, it appears it finally went down this weekend. Probably the hosting fee for it finally ran out. I've personally archived her site, but it has also been captured at Archive.org.

Here's the address of the last snapshot they have from September 2019: https://web.archive.org/web/20190927201803/http://www.jhedge.com/

The URL will become available later this year. I'm tempted to pick it up and put the site back up myself. But we'll see what happens. Certainly her site was a valuable resource for new BGC fans and we all enjoyed her fan-fics.

Marco,

Yes, since I was mostly on CompuServe at the time, I missed out on the main activity here. But I’ve been having fun going back over the archive. It seems these days, the closest thing to USENET Newsgroups in terms of activity and scope is Reddit. I know it’s a totally different arraignment, but the culture seems very similar, and of course it’s a lot simpler for average users to get into. And the anime fan culture there is very active and diverse.

Thank you for the summary of your writing! Imma gonna go check those links out after this. And read some of the stories. There are a few popular BGC fan-fics that I’ve been catching up on lately after all of these years. As for me, I was doing fan art, and publishing the Anime Stuff newsletter (with tons of BGC stuff reviewed in it), at the time and never did try my hand at doing a story. (Jeanne also helped with that newsletter.) Although BGC would be one of the first I’d try if I had a compelling idea. (^o^)

Aaaand…It’s also nice to meet another Gunnm fan! Particularly one that actually calls it “Gunnm”. “Battle Angel Alita” will always be Gunnm to me, as will Alita’s name always be “Gally”. (^_-) Gunnm cross-overs, eh? Interesting idea!

Oh, and I’m another Video Girl Ai fan too.

Hi Tom,

I downloaded Jeanne's site files after I'd heard the news of Jeanne's passing and some folks at one of the BGC FB groups suggested I archive it. If the BGC community is OK with it then I would be honoured to add the site to ravensgarage.com, but I am going to check with the family first. I'll see if anyone on the FB group has a way to contact her family.

I should take a look! Any particularly good reddit groups I should check out? I just found:

https://www.reddit.com/r/Gunnm

and it looks alive! There also seems to be an active Discord server, perhaps it's time to relive the old days a bit ^^

I was never on CompuServe, just spent time on USENET and the "New Kansas" Gunnm chat room. Email was still a thing, both through mailing lists and in private.

Sure, hope you enjoy them! After my fanfic phase I made AMVs for a few years:

https://www.animemusicvideos.org/members/members_myprofile.php?user_id=150025

Curiously I never used Gunnm or BGC, I guess I just wanted to try something different. Once I quit making AMVs back in the late 00s I started photography as a hobby and have been doing that ever since.

There's been a bit of a resurgence since the movie. Back in the day we'd spent our time discussing casting choices, and I have a vague recollection of Jennifer Connelly being the one pick that actually made it in.

I absolutely love VGAi:

I sometimes shoot cosplayers, and it's been a dream of mine to some day see Ai cosplayed once again and do a photoshoot.

Take care Tom, cheers!
