Alt.fan.bgcrisis first came online in 1993, hence the subject
question. Probably a lifetime ago for some of us younger fans. I'll
tell you what I was up to:

In 1993...

...I turned ten.
...I entered the fifth grade. (Yes, I was ten and in fifth grade. I
was practically a year younger than everyone else, lol)
...My brothers and I were more than thrilled to get our hands on the
SNES.
...I slowly saved up $40 so I could buy Super Mario Kart for the
aforementioned system. And trust me, I got more than my money's worth
out of it.
...I got the scar on my chin. On my little brother's seventh birthday
I was playing a game outside with some neighbor kids, and as I was
running in the gutter I slipped on some gravel and landed on my chin
on the sidewalk. Ironically didn't start crying until Dad was
treating it.
...I was absorbing all of the old cartoons that Cartoon Network was
running, back when CN was what Boomerang is now.
...I was introduced to Metallica, and Beavis and Butthead, via my
older brother.
...My family moved from a townhouse to an actual house. Stayed there
until two years ago.
...I was still three years away from discovering BGC.

You're making me feel old, Amanda. In 1993, I was working for the same
employer I'm working for now. (Not in the same group, though; I've had a
couple of lateral transfers and a few raises since then.)

(sigh...)

I was 6.

Which put me in First Class in school.

I was watching Brave*Starr, The Raccoons, playing with Scalextric, and
fascinated by something called an 'Amiga'

I wanted a Subbutteo football set for Christmas. I got a broken one.

I saw a psychiatrist, but forget why. Just that it got me out of
school.

In '93 I entered 3rd grade. Not much to tell beyond that, I only got
seriously acquainted with anime in general in 2002/2003, tbh :X

I think I started taking flute classes around that time as well...not
sure, though...

Been trying to catch up ever since :D

Forgot a few things. In 1993...

...I was (still) in speech therapy once a week, which got me out of
class for an hour, and why I had to go, I had no bloody idea. I know
now, of course, but back then, uh-uh.
...I played the trumpet in the school band during fifth grade. Alas,
the trumpet was a rental, so that was the only year I played it.
Promptly forgot everything.

Has to do with the whole autistic thing I mentioned in the other
topic. =o I think even back then I had already been told that I'd
been tested for autism and "only" fulfilled eight of the twelve
criteria, but I took that to mean "Well, that means I'm not
autistic." Ha-ha. I think it was to help me talk WITH people and not
AT them. I remember it was boring.

I 1993...

...I turned five.
...I had to read to other kindergartner kids. Luckily, I remembered it
was once.
...my dad didn't live with us anymore.
...I lived one year from getting an NES.
...was five, six years away from my first exposure to BGC (Red Eyes).

My memory of back then is hazy.

Let's see...

In 1993...

-I turned 17.
-I entered my senior year in high school.
-I had probably just discovered BGC by this time.
-I was the proud owner of both a Genesis and a Super NES.
-I'd be 12 years away from finally getting my frakkin' license(Sad, I
know...)
-I started working with my dad during the summer.
-I was studying Tae Kwon Do.

...And the rest is pretty much a blur. o_o

Ah yes, X-Men, Spiderman, and Power Rangers all premiered on Fox that
year. Kimberly was, and is, my favorite Power Ranger. Just wasn't
the same after she left.

Anyway, I remembered a few MORE things XD

In 1993...

...World Youth Day was taking part in Cherry Creek Park in Denver. My
family, along with one of my older brother's friends, all attended,
even though we're not Catholic. I think it was 'cause Dad had printed
some shirts for it, but I really don't remember WHY we were there.
One guy gave me some pinkish beads that he said he'd gotten from Mardi
Gras. I had those for the longest time. The closest I got to the
Pope was seeing a helicopter carrying him flying overhead (and
everyone around me freaking out).
...I discovered what baby gerbils look like. At the time I had three
gerbils -- Rusty (brown, male), Speedy (white, female), and Brown
Sugar (light brown, female). Upon getting back from World Youth Day I
discovered both Speedy and Brown Sugar had given birth, and I'd had no
idea they were pregnant. I screamed, "THEY HAD BABIES!!!" Raised the
babies, gave them away, and they gave birth again just before we moved
(noted in my first post).

It was the first WYD in North America. All Christians will return to
Rome some day.

PS.

Do you like the artbook?

QFT.

Fuck Rome. Being in the same vicinity as Silvio Berlusconi would probably
cause me a serious rash. Somebody just shoot the fucker.

In 1993 I was in my first year at high school (aka hell).
...The Zahn Star Wars trilogy finished up that spring...
...I saw BGC for the first time, also that spring...
...The first Ranma 1/2 graphic novel was released in the US, which I
read that fall....

Rather eventual, since I had gotten into anime in the fall of 1992. I
didn't actually get onto the internet until Fall of 94, when Prodigy
started offering internet services, and I got a Delphi account shortly
thereafter.
I still see that period, from 1985 to around 1996, as the Golden Age
of anime Fandom in the English-speaking world. Because back then, we
got so little that it was always the very best. Now we get whatever
crap is popular in Japan at the time.

Yea no kidding. I accually read Ranma 1/2 vol 1 10 years after it was
released, its not a bad first volume either.

As for the internet, i didnt get that till 1999. Yea, im kinda behind
the times here and there.

Back then, when I was an anime greenhorn, anime stood for adult
animation, and it felt as something underground, especially when the
only way I had the chance to watch it were foreign channels past
midnight. The program was fantastic - late 80', early 90' OVAs. What
more could a ten-year old want?

I miss those days :(

In 1993...

...I was still discovering anime, through the devices of a friend and
former roommate. If I'm not mistaken, I had just been introduced to
"Ranma 1/2".

...I had not yet discovered (contemporary) fan fiction.

...My computer was an original IBM PC with a weird piggy-back 386
processor board that replaced the original 8086 chip.

...I had a severe flu that kept me bedbound for a week, during which
time the (more or less unsuccessful) bombing of the World Trade Center
took place; coverage of that event pre-empted a TV movie I had been
looking forward to for most of a year, called "Babylon 5: The
Gathering".

...My wife and I debated whether or not the brand-new movie "Addams
Family Values" was better or worse than "The Addams Family".

...I discovered and grew to be a great fan of "Beakman's World".

...I celebrated my third wedding anniversary.

...I got my second annual raise at the sixth job I'd had since
graduating college.

...I attended my ninth college reunion.

...I already had five books to my name as author or co-author, and one
more with "additional material by" credit. I also had at least seven
magazine articles to my credit, and maybe more.

...I turned 31.

Whoa, I also had the flu when the Babylon 5 pilot aired. I was only
able to get through about half of it, since I wasn't able to follow
much of it in my diminished state. I remember emphasizing with Kosh,
though, since he spent most of the pilot in a similar state.
