I was registered for the first convention. I had the t shirt for ages. Never got to go. I was just 17 and dating the lunatic who was jealous of Barry. I've made up for it, for sure. But I wish I had made it to this one.

The First Great BMIFC Convention! - Poplar Creek, IL - July 25, 1983.

Here is what Barry had to say about this great night:

Hi Everyone!

Time for Manilow TV.

This month's show is a memorable one.

We were in Chicago at Poplar Creek, an indoor-outdoor arena, with seats under a roof and a huge lawn for people to sit on. It was a hot summer night and I remember fighting the bugs during the songs.

This show was very special because it had the First Barry Manilow Fan Club Convention.

Can you imagine that audience? They were wild and such fun.

It was one of the first times I sang the beautiful "No Other Love" and Act 2 began with the Barrytone News. That's pretty funny.

I think you'll enjoy this trip down memory lane.

Enjoy,

Barry

Well, they got me at last.

Not only was that Poplar Creek convention show amazing, but my friend Barb got picked to sing. She was sitting next to me.

And I was at that Youngstown show as well. It was spectacular. Barry was totally blown away by the audience.

Better go find the credit card ...

I'm gonna have to dig out my ticket stubs. I know I saw Barry at Poplar Creek during the first BMIFC convention; I just don't remember if that particular night was the date or not.
It was the first time my parents let me drive to a concert on my own, having just graduated high school a couple of weeks before. I think I still have the mimeographed sheet that one of the clubs was handing out, something like "let's all sing happy birthday to Barry..."
