Barry Manilow On The Spot

Here It Is -- The Place In "16" Where The Stars Themselves Answer Your
Letters & Questions. This Month, The Very Musical Mr. Manilow -- Barry,
To You -- Takes Over, And Here's What He Has To Say To You!

DOES HE SMOKE?

I've heard conflicting reports -- please straighten me out. Does Barry
manilow smoke or not?

Judy Rogers
Wichita, Kansas

Dear Judy,

You're confused because I used to smoke -- in fact, I once had a bad
habit. So if the reports you got were from a while ago, they were true.
However, I've since quit, for good, I hope!

AGE & COLORING

I've been wondering about Barry Manilow, who is my favorite singer. How
old is he? Also, is his natural color hair blond or brown? It looks
blond in pictures, but I've read it's really brown. What color eyes does
he have?

Anna Johnson
Greenville, Texas

Dear Anna,

I just turned 31 years old (my birthday is June 17) and my natural color
hair is light brown, but I do streak it lighter for show business. My
eyes are blue -- and thanks for saying I'm your favorite singer, that's
nice.

WHAT KIND OF CAR?

I know mostly everything about Barry Manilow, but I've never read what
kind of car he drives?

Helaine Marcos
Indianpolis, Ind.

Dear Helaine,

That's because I don't have any car at all -- and *that's* because I don't
know how to drive (nor am I eager to learn!).

FREE TIME

I think Barry is super-terrific! I love him! My question is, what does
he like to do in his spare time. I mean, does he have any special hobbies
or anything?

Dawn Saiznic
Albert Lea, Mn.

Dear Dawn,

Spare time? What's that?? Really, I've been working so much lately, I've
forgotten what that is! Let's see, when I did have free time, I used to
love playing backgammon, watching TV, going to scary movies and eating
Japanese food. And hey, thanks for the lovely words!

KIND OF GIRL

I'm just dying to know what kind of girl Barry Manilow goes for. I really
think if I met him, he'd like me, but I'd love to hear *him* tell about
his dream-girl.

Inez White
Molalla, Oregon

Dear Inez,

I bet I'd like you, too -- in fact you do seem to have one quality I look
for -- that's intelligence! I also like a girl with a good sense of humor
and I'd prefer "my girl" to be well dressed -- and not always in pants.
Hope that answers you, doll.

COLOGNE?

I'm curious about something. Does Barry Manilow like to wear cologne? If
so, what kind is his favorite.

Ellen Pulaski
Lincoln, Nebraska

Dear Ellen,

Yes, I wear "Eau Savage" by Christian Dior.

WON'T GIVE INTERVIEWS?

I've read that Barry Manilow has become temperamental lately and refuses
to give out interviews. Please say it isn't true, because how else will
we Barry fans find out about him?

Vickie Woodson
Va. Beach, Va.

Dear Vicki,

It isn't true -- you see me right here in "16," don't you? But there
*are* certain magazines and newspapers I won't talk to, that's true, but
only because of the way they've treated me in the past. I don't mean bad
reviews -- that's their prerogative -- but some publications have printed
out and out lies about me, or made fun of some of my songs. It's like
knives, stabbing me, when I read things like that. Maybe I'm too
sensitive, but it really hurts. I'll always dig "16," though, so you can
find out about me right here!

IN LOVE WITH BETTE?

I hope this question isn't too personal, but I'd like to find out the
truth. Did Barry and Bette Midler ever go together? I heard he was in
love with her, but she dropped him.

Andrea Respulta
Erie, Pa.

Dear Andrea,

No, that's not too personal -- I've been asked lots more personal
questions than that! Anyway, it's a fair question since Bette and I were
together so much for five years. But we really never had a love affair --
in fact, when we first met, we hated each other! It was only through
music that we became friends at all. I love Bette's music and I love her
as a performer, but there was never anything romantic between us.

HIS CHILDHOOD

You never hear about Barry Manilow's childhood. Is there something he
doesn't want his fans to know?

Danielle Burns
Miami, Florida

Dear Danielle,

I'm certainly not trying to hide anything, but I had such a difficult
childhood that I don’t like to talk about it much. Briefly, I grew up on
Division Street in the Williamsburg section of Brooklyn, New York -- and
believe me that's a tough place! It's really a poor ghetto and since my
father left when I was only two, I don't have very good memories of the
place. My mom, Edna, worked hard and she gave me accordion lessons when I
was eleven. I switched to piano at 13 and stayed with it. I went to
Eastern District High School, City College of New York and finally,
Juilliard School of Music. I worked my way through the last two with a
job in the mailroom at CBS. So that's my childhood -- thanks for being
interested.

WHERE HE LIVES

Does Barry Manilow live in Hollywood like most of the other singers I
like?

Tracy Rosenfeld
Atlanta, Ga.

Dear Tracy,

Nope, I live just a little closer to your side of the country -- in New
York City! I have an apartment in Manhattan that's really great. It's
got a terrace and lots of mirrors. I've added my own taste -- shag rugs
for my dog "Bagel" to snuggle up in and a grand piano for me!

MARRIED?

Is Barry Manilow married or single? I'm curious to know.

Renee Watson
Des Moines, Iowa

Dear Renee,

I'm single and plan to remain that way -- I think! I *was* married, soon
after college. When you grew up in Brooklyn in those days and you had a
girlfriend, that's what you did, you got married, whether you were ready
or not. We weren't. It lasted a year. I'm the type who doesn't like
contracts of any kind and marriage is definitely one. But -- you never
know!

Wow! Am I out of space already? I feel like I've just begun -- anyway,
this was fun. Thanks for your letters and your interest. You're
beautiful, you know!!

As always, I love reading these vintage interviews. I especially loved
the question about driving. Little did he know at the time that this
would be one of the few things in life, other than music, that he truly
would enjoy.

I love these vintage interviews too! I tend to picture myself at whatever
age I was during these interviews and what a trip down memory lane. Boy was
I an ugly kid, lol!
