He does duets with all these other people, and not Barry? Not cool.

Hello Roy,

Maybe Barry was asked but turned it down because he's busy with other
things. Barry's done many duets but none with Tony that I know of.

Before judgement is passed on Tony Bennett slighting Barry, we do
not know the circumstances.
Maybe Barry and Tony or their agents/managers could not agree on
money, available dates for recording, arrangements, vocal styles,
songs, and other things that come up. I will admit it is disappointing
that Tony has done duets with most of the famous artists, but not
Barry yet. but I don't want to condemn Tony. Marvin

I'm delighted Barry isn't on there.

Sorry ... I know this opinion is about as politically incorrect as it
gets in the music biz ... but when I first heard about this album, my
very first thought was, "Oh great, a bunch of famous people taking
turns singing covers with The Fossil."

I'm glad Barry had better things to do (like recording some original
music).

It is OK not to like Tony Bennett. I personally think that because
he is way past his prime and his voice sounds it too (Tony Bennett I
think is 85 or older), he is not the great performer today that he
used to be.
However, we all know from listening to Radio Manilow that Barry
loves the song stylings of the 1940s standards and while Barry would
probably love to do duets with Frank Sinatra, Peggy Lee or Judy
Garland, they are all gone and Tony Bennett may be the only singer
left from the WW2 generation that is still alive and performing.
So with that in mind, and remembering how good Barry was with the
late Mel Torme and Sarah Vaughn in "Paradise Cafe", I know that Barry
and Tony Bennett would do justice to one of the 1940s standards and it
would be a great honor for the two of them do a duet. Bennett worked
well with Diane Krall, kd Lang and so many others, and could not see
how a duet of Bennett and Barry Manilow would not work. Marvin

When we visited the studio, they told us that Clay had recorded his
portion of a duet with Barry when he was there -- and, although my
memory is a tad hazy ... I think it was for the 50's CD and the song
was "Moments to Remember".

Maybe it's something we can request be played on IHeartManilowRadio.
I'd be interested in hearing that duet.

Has anyone ever heard of that song being recorded as a duet with
Clay?

I saw a mention of it on a Clay Aiken fan site I sometimes visit
Sharon, and I think the song was Young At Heart. It's too bad that
version didn't make it onto the cd; Clay's fans would have bought it
just for that one track if that was the only way to get it.

This is exactly what I was hoping wouldn't happen this year Brenda.
It doesn't matter that Bennett's voice is pretty much gone; he's older
than dirt and he usually chooses the latest, greatest, and youngest to
do these duets with and this time I think his duet with Amy Winehouse
is going to be included. Now, who do you think is probably going to be
undeservedly nominated for a Grammy, and will most likely win? I
really hope I'm proven wrong, but we'll find out in late December or
early January, depending on when the nominations are announced.

Moments to Remember is from the 50's album but that wasn't recorded at
Cue Studios although 2 singers don't necessarily need to be in the
same place at the same time to record a duet. However, Barry used it
as the opening for the CD and it wouldn't have worked as a duet unless
there is another recorded version somewhere in the vaults.

I think you're right, Crystal. Tony Bennett is one of those Grammy
favorites. Being this album has Amy on it, I can't imagine it won't
get nominated. It would be a real shame to pit him against Barry
because Tony would get the "older than dirt" sympathy vote and Barry,
who so deserves this, would be shut out.

Correct me if I am wrong, but would not Tony Bennett be in the
category of best traditional CD and "15 Minutes' be in the category of
best new CD, so Barry and Tony Bennett would not really be competing.

First, they have to be nominated. Then, we'll see what catergories
they are in and if they will be against each other. I have a feeling
Tony will be nominated just because he'll have Amy on that CD and it
will be a collector's item since she isn't here anymore but then what
do I know? I hope Barry gets a nod since this new CD is an original.
I agree, Tony is 85 and sounds like it. I never thought he had that
great a voice anyway but he keeps plugging along and it's good to know
he still has his mind. I'll be pissed as hell if Tony gets nominated
and Barry doesn't. But then Tony doesn't have that many years left
where Barry is still going strong and will be for a long time if all
goes well.

"New CD" for what? There has to be a category. I don't even know the
categories for the Grammy's anymore. Is there an adult contemporary
category? Probably the one that wouldn't be televised. That would be
Barry's category.

I don't think Tony Bennett's cd falls with traditional. I think they
would be in the same category together.

Again ... they already gave Tony one Grammy because they thought he'd
kick off soon. How many more should he be entitled to before he
actually does?

I'm just worried that he's got the duet with the dead chick on
there ... if it gets a Grammy, it'll be because some moron thinks they
should do it for Amy Winehouse's memory.

I agree but we aren't the ones who vote on these, are we? I have a
feeling Tony will sell lots of these because of the people he has on
the CD just like Barry sells them. Amy had a lot of followers so it
may happen. Personally, she had a decent voice but she was out of
control. Sooner or later the odds catch up with you when you play with
fire. I didn't like her style of music at all and I like Lady Gaga
even less..

Actually, Tony has won ten Grammy Awards for Best Traditional Pop Vocal
since 1993. In the years he didn't take that category he won for Album
of the Year, and Best Pop Collaboration with Vocals. He also picked up a
Lifetime Achievement Award in 2001. Add the two from I Left My Heart in
San Francisco, and you get 15 total.

I think he is now. Let's hope we'll be seeing Barry around like that
from time to time when he's that age. BTW there are people who are
saying the same thing about Barry, "Here's an award because you're
still alive" crap and he is much younger than Tony Bennet. I think it
is very kind the music industry still gives notice to the Icons of
music past. I doubt it very much if they would give an award just
because of the Amy Winehouse duet, same as I doubt that mentioning Amy
Winehouse in one of Barry's songs on 15 minutes would justify his
winning the Grammy also. Could be Tony Bennet and Barry will go up
against each other in the same category this coming Grammy Awards.
Mr. Bennet seems to have won a lot of them, much more than Barry. I
doubt if he won all of them because he is old.

Enough with the "Here's an award because your father was Nat King
Cole, and you're on dialysis until your son can give you one of his

cover cd of her father's most well known songs. That was the year
Barry was nominated for In The Swing Of Christmas, and Natalie Cole
was making the rounds of the talk shows before the voting was finished
and letting the host/hosts and audience know about her dire health
problem.

OK So when did Barry record a traditional pop vocal album that will
have him in the same category as Tony Bennett? I don't remember
buying a traditional pop vocal album from Barry this year.. The last
Cd of Barry's that I added to my collection was 15 Minutes. Just my
opinion 15 Minutes is not a traditional pop album. To me 15 Minutes
is more like old school rock and roll. Like what you would hear from
Crosby, Stills and Nash, Queen, Journey, Doobie Brothers with
Micheal McDonald.and etc. Tony Bennett had the younger artists
on his Duets II to get the young people interested in this album.

I do not like to publicly denounce a nice guy like Tony Bennett
and the posters that feel that he genuinely deserves his past Grammys
are entitled to their opinion, but the posters that say that politics
or sentiment has a lot to do with who wins have a valid case as well.
As with the Academy Awards and even the Kennedy Center Honors, we all
have our favorites- and being Barry fans- we are emotionally involved
for him to win awards- and feel upset, as I am sure he does, when he
does not get the recognition he deserves by winning an award.
But, since awards were given out, it is always debatable who
has the best film, the best CD, the best actor/performer and there is
a lot of interplay behind the scenes and the voting is secret most of
the time, meaning nobody can accurately predict if a voters votes on
merit, sentiment or politics. So, whether Barry wins a Grammy
nomination for 15 Minutes or not, we will never know why the voters
would select him or not. Marvin

Tony Bennett will probably receive a nomination in the Traditional
Album category for "Duets II", but NOT this year. His album, released
today, Sept. 20, 2011, missed the August 31, 2011 cut off date for
eligibility, and it will have to wait until next year to be nominated.

In my opinion, the only music category in which "15 Minutes" could be
nominated is Pop Album with Vocals. However, I will NOT be surprised,
if it is NOT nominated at all. Neither should any of you.

The Grammy Awards have been completely revamped starting this year.
31 awards (28%) have been eliminated or combined starting this year
(2011). Only 78 awards will be given out next year compared to the
109 awarded this year. The Best Male Pop Vocal Performance category,
in which Barry won for "Copacabana" in 1979, no longer exists. It has
been combined with the Female award, into what is, now, the Solo Pop
Vocal Performance category. Other categories have been eliminated,
altogether.

Even if the academy expands the number of nominees in certain
categories, it is, likely, harder to be nominated and, definitely,
harder to win.

If "15 Minutes" does receive a nomination(s) in any categories, we
should all consider that a major honor, because it, almost certainly,
will NOT win. Otherwise, "15 Minutes" will have had its 15 minutes,
when it reached No. 7 on the Billboard 200 Album chart, something it
achieved with underwhelming sales (approx. 36,000 units) in its debut
week.

Sometimes, you have to appreciate what you get, instead of focusing on
what you think you deserve.

John

P.S. Tony Bennett has been nominated eleven times and won ten (50%)
of the twenty Traditional Album/Performance awards given out since
1992. Regardless of whether it is political or not, he is the
perennial favorite in that category, and this will, likely, continue
for the remainder of his career.

Personally, I don't think it is political. He has won so many times,
over many years and over many talented, well-known artists. The only
conclusion I can draw is that the academy really likes his records.

Nice words ...unless you lived in the former Soviet Union... or you're
a woman stuck in an abusive marriage.

I refuse to buy into that philosophy.

Sometimes you have to say "screw this" to what life hands you, and
keep trying for what you think life owes you.

If Barry didn't feel that way, we never would have heard of him
because he would have spent the last 40 years in the CBS mailroom.

“But who are the terrorists? Are we the terrorists or are they the

“They flew the plane in, but we caused it,” he continued. “Because we

I had the same problem with Frank Sinatra in the last few years of
his life.
When Sinatra did his duets album, his voice no longer was crisp
and vulnerable and the performances by the younger artists made the
album sound good, but not as good as Sinatra in his prime as a duet
partner.
With that in mind, I also hope that when Barry makes Paradise Cafe
2, he does not ask Tony Bennett to do a duet with him, because at this
stage of life, Tony Bennett's singing voice won't blend well with
Barry's and could hurt the quality of the album. Marvin

I hope he asks him.

He's a music icon -- and it's a shame they haven't worked together
before this. There are very few from his era still performing, and
even Josh Groban is performing on Tony's Duets II CD.

I think Barry goes out of his way to make sure that his duet partners
sound good. Heck, even Lily Tomlin sounded good on "Last Duet".

Besides, there's always Autotune if Tony (or Barry) hit a clunker or
two.

I understand your sentiment Sharon, but, as Roy introduced this
topic, why didn't Tony Bennett and his people ask Barry to be a duet
partner? If Tony can't consider Barry worthy of being a duet partner
in his album, why should Barry consider Tony a duet partner for
Paradise Cafe 2? Marvin

Barry doesn't need Tony Bennett on his next CD.

Even if Tony still had a voice - which he doesn't - I would boycott
anything with this man on it. He's a traitor.

Brenda is referring to Tony Bennett's remarks on the Howard Stern
radio show that implied the terrorism from 9/11 was done because of
America attacking Iraq. What is offending Brenda, me and probably a
vast majority of Americans is Tony Bennett justifying the terrorism of
9/11- something no major political figure or celebrity in the US has
ever done before. Marvin

I read an update to this. Tony Bennett wrote on his facebook page
that he apologized for his remarks and did not mean to offend anyone
claiming he is a pacifist. Perhaps he is sincere or maybe Tony Bennett
got much flack for his comments and knowing that he wants to sell his
next CD, he made an immediate apology. Marvin

A Statement from Tony Bennett
by Tony Bennett on Tuesday, September 20, 2011 at 2:12pm

A Statement from Tony Bennett (clarifying comments made on yesterday's
Howard Stern program):

I am so grateful to be an American and as a World War II veteran, I
was proud to fight to protect our values, which have made America the
greatest country on the planet.

There is simply no excuse for terrorism and the murder of the nearly
3,000 innocent victims of the 9/11 attacks on our country.

My life experiences - ranging from the Battle of the Bulge to marching
with Martin Luther King - made me a life-long humanist and pacifist,
and reinforced my belief that violence begets violence and that war is
the lowest form of human behavior.

I am sorry if my statements suggested anything other than an
expression of my love for my country, my hope for humanity and my
desire for peace throughout the world.

I don't buy it.

He's apologizing because someone (his manager... his publicist ....
God knows who else) probably told him he'd lose sales if he didn't.

He meant what he said the first time. Nobody blunders into a comment
like that without meaning it. And, in this case, it wasn't something
taken out of context. He's recording saying the actual words on
Howard Stern.

Screw him.

He's not sorry he said it, just sorry it raised such a ruckus. I
wonder if he's going to retroactively blame the United States for
Japan bombing Pearl Harbor, too.

How can you be a life-long pacifist, if you fought at the Battle of
the Bulge? Why didn't he become a conscious objector? I realize that
at his age, beliefs and facts are subject to change, as memory
declines. But if he thinks he misspoke, he needs to say that, not just
try to gloss over it.

Maybe he's just an old man that said something really stupid under
pressure during an interview with a high profile radio jock.

That's just my take. He's never been a favorite crooner of mine, but

My Dad had lots of "senior moments" while he was alive.

He was also a WWII vet.

But no matter how delusional he got - even at the end - he never - by
word or deed - betrayed his own country.

I just think Mr. Bennett left more than his heart in San Francisco.
It's obvious his brain is there as well. And if he's that addled, he

And how many people do you think there would be saying, in the wake of

Seriously, Brenda? When you have to drag the Soviet Union and
domestic violence into a disagreement about who wins a Grammy award,
that's the point when you should acknowledge you have no intelligent
argument to make. To twist what John said into him speaking out in
support of domestic violence is not only ludicrous, but it cheapens
the entire subject of domestic violence and insults its victims. Keep
your arguments focused on the subject at hand instead of trying to
manipulate people's emotions by dragging in irrelevant hot-button
issues. It's a cheap ploy, an old ploy, and a pathetic one.

Actually, many, many celebrities and politicians have talked about how
the 9/11 attacks were a direct results of the US's arrogance and self-

He's everywhere! He's everywhere!

Last night, idly doing paperwork and with Blue Bloods (CBS, Tom
Selleck, season premiere) on in the background, I about fell off the
chair when I hear announced (as part of the show), "Ladies and
Gentleman - Tony Bennett and Carrie Underwood." They sang ‘It Had to
Be You.’ At the end, Carrie Underwood said it was the song they
recorded together for Tony Bennett’s new 85th birthday album.
Also, there were several commercials aired for the album, available at
Target, showing all the singers who recorded with Tony on the new
album.

I have to admit, this was the last place I thought I'd see Tony
Bennett and a promo for his new album worked into a show.

You know, Trishy, I checked out that link ...

Uh, first ... nowhere does this website source where the info came
from.

And second ... did you even bother reading this?

"Disclaimer

assume that such information is up to date or completely accurate or
final. CelebrityNetWorth does not assume responsibility for any errors
in the information it presents on this site. All information on this

Bottom line, Trishy, is that unless you have access to Mr. Bennett's
tax returns (which, last I checked, would be illegal for you to obtain
without his consent), you or I have no fucking clue what he's worth.

But hell... having questionable information never stopped you from
treating it as though it were fact before, so please do carry on. The
world will always need its bullshit artists, and you're the grand
master. In fact, here's an idea ,,.., why don't you copy and paste
that disclaimer CelebrityNetWorth used and tack it on to the end of
your next book? You know, "copy and paste" ... pretty much what you
did when you lifted content out of "Starlust" for your last chapter in
that so-called bio you wrote about Barry.

You are still, after all these years, such an unbelievable moron.

I'm sure he'd like the CD to sell or he wouldn't have made it. That

Well, since I'm not Tony Bennett's biographer, yes, it's completely
trival, and completely irrelevant to the conversation. Whether he's
82 or 85 or 78 or 102 doesn't alter the point that he's of advanced
age, does it?

> Better luck next time.

Is there a next time for making the point that Tony Bennett is an
older person? I think that's been done.

Actually, you basically ignored the point the person was trying to

Well, you're the one who's blown a gasket because someone pointed out

Actually, Sharon, since -- once again -- the exact number of his age
had absolutely no relevance to the point being made, no, you wouldn't
have heard about it. In fact, in the same context, it's not clear why
anyone would have scampered off to verify the exact number unless they
were specifically looking for something they could pounce on to use as
a basis for a bunch of pointless nasty comments. But, for some
reason, you decided to take the time to do that. Interesting.

"The fans" as typified by you, Brenda? Because if you're the standard
you'd prefer biographers to cite, I'd say all the real Manilow fans
would have quite a problem with that. And you can snipe about my book
all you want, but you're not exactly hiding the fact that you've been
jealous as hell from the very beginning that someone else wrote it,
not you. If you don't want that to keep happening, maybe you should
stop spending all your free time hanging out here trying so
desperately to be the queen of nothing and actually go out and
accomplish something real that some other tragic figure on a fan
newsgroup can envy?

Brenda:

Again, I'm not writing a biography of Tony Bennett, so your constant
(oh so jealous) jabs about that are, again, irrelevant. And your
initial snotty insistence that I cite an exact number for Bennett's
self-worth didn't really deserve an accurate answer, did it? You
asked a really stupid question no the back of making some really
stupid comments, so stop whining when you got what you apparently
consider to be a stupid answer in return. You're really turned into a
tragically nasty old biddy, Brenda. At least you fit the stereotype
-- well done!

Oopsie .... almost forgot.

If you haven't already been diagnosed, you might want to go to this
link, print out the page and take it to your therapist. I'm sure it
will save you time AND money! :-)

You really crack me up. Pointless nasty comments are your stock in
trade. And really, it's not interesting that I knew Mr. Bennett's age.
He's been all over the papers and internet lately, with his birthday
concert and all. All I had to do was read.

For someone who writes "biographies" you certainly hold "facts" in
small regard. Might make a person wonder about the alleged "facts" in
your books.

I'm just amazed at the time and effort PB puts into defending herself,
without ever actually contributing anything new or Manilow related.
And yes, Patsy, before you jump in and tell me I'm doing the same
thing, I know it. This time. But at least I post about Barry and his
music, too. And not through proxies, either. You're so intent on
trashing the members of this group...do you ever do anything positive?
No, no, spare md the litany of your good works. I'm already feeling
nauseous.

Sharon, what part of "I'm not writing a biography of Tony Bennett" did
you have trouble understanding?

Sharon, if you're feeling nauseous, I suggest you move away from the
mirror. And if you hadn't been so busy trying to figure out some
nasty comment to make -- ANY nasty comment to make -- maybe you would
have noticed the Barry-related article I posted this afternoon.

The sad thing about you and Brenda is that you're both so eaten up by
bitterness and jealousy and rage that you are incapable of learning or
growing or even just being happy in the moment. It's a pity for each
of you, and for all of us who become the victims of your unhappiness.

Okay ... I know I've been messing with Trishy... she's such an easy
mark, I can't help it. Please forgive me. :-)

(And yes, that is my new name for her ... it's something light, and
fun, and playful ... all the things I wish she would let herself be
when she comes here, but never does.)

But in dead seriousness ...

She takes herself WAY too seriously. That's her problem in a
nutshell. She needs to learn to lighten up and not take herself and
her writing so damn seriously. We all need to laugh at ourselves,
because we're all human, we're all goofy, we all SHOULD be laughed at
now and again. But do you ever notice - there's nothing light-hearted
in anything she writes here. I find that really disturbing.

I'm no doctor, so I have no idea if she needs therapy, medication, or
some kind of constructive outlet for whatever it is that's eating at
her. But I sincerely hope she finds a way to lighten up a little.
Okay, I lied...a LOT.

And .. I sure wish she could at least pretend like she likes Barry,
even a little bit.

I do, so I think I'm going to go talk about Barry now. I've grown
bored with this thread, I think. :-)

Later ...

All of "US" who become "victims"?? OMFG. Brenda's right, you're so
wrapped up in yourself, it's laughable. You couldn't be a victim if
you tried.

Your so-called Barry-related article? Another slam at a great man. Way
to go. Good stuff. Geez.

Excuse me now I'm going to go play with my smart, handsome three year
old grandson. (one of six, btw.)

CA Sharon

PS. Jealousy? Of what? You? Again, OMFG. Not a chance in hell. I've
lived too long, seen too much, to carry bitterness, jealousy or rage
toward anyone or anything. I just can't help myself sometimes. It's
like poking a sleeping cat. You know you're gonna annoy it, and
probably get scratched, if not worse, but it so much fun to see the
cat spit and hiss.

Yes, Brenda always suddenly grows bored with topics when confronted by
someone who sees her as she is and doesn't hesitate to say so.
Brenda, you spend most of your time here bitching about Manilow and
making all kinds of wild claims about how Manilow and his people
alternately fear and mistreat you. The rest of your time you spend
demeaning anyone who disagrees with you or -- heaving forbid! --
suggests they may have a closer connection to or better knowledge of
Manilow than you do. You lie repeatedly and, when caught in those
lies, you act like a feral dog backed into a corner. Maybe in between
your nasty comments about me and your endless bitching about Manilow
you might want to take a minute or two and think about how your life
came grinding to a halt and what you might be able to do to make it
once again productive and worthwhile enough so you don't feel the need
to take out your frustrations on total strangers on internet
newsgroups. Trust me -- that bit of self-contemplation is long
overdue for you, and you really can't afford to put it off any longer.

Thank you, Sharon. You're not bright enough to realize it, but you
just essentially said that I am life itself.

If you're going to try to insult someone via Bartlett's, you might
want to first check the original context of the quote.

Just because I'm laughing at you and not with you doesn't mean I'm
laughing any less.

Please remember that your entire knowledge of me is based on a few
online posts. Just based on your comments in the past couple of days
it's painfully obviously that you know absolutely nothing about me or
my personal life. Keep reminding yourself of that.
