Glasgow was fab apart from Barry not being informed about the different between UK and England

I have followed Barry from London - Glasgow, and now I am off to
Ireland and really excited. All the concerts have been fantastic, but
BRUM was my favourite up to now. My problem is........... I had
dinner with some Scottish friends last night and was informed that if
Barry associates England with Scotland the crowd would not be happy.
As rightly so, Scotland are apart of the United Kingdom, and is a
separate country from England. So quivering and holding my breath, in
my seat at the SECC hoping someone had informed Barry of this when it
happened............... He said England, not once but twice. I heard
many Scottish people sitting behind me becoming quite upset, and
decided at this point not to talk in my scouse accent until I was
securely back at my hotel. Woke up to texts this morning saying people
have been on scottish radio saying they will never buy another Barry
album least alone go back to a concert due to the England mistake, and
by having red, white and blue streamers shoot into the air. Why oh why
was Barry not informed of this extremely important information. Hope
to God this doesn't happen in Dublin. Or I will have to leave half way
through for my own safety :-s

Oh for crying out loud, I am so pi$$ed off with all this PC crap, I could scream. Barry was doing a concert, one which the Scottish fans, had been yelping for, not a bloody US Envoy Mission. Ditto Irene, if that is all they have to worry about, lucky them. Get a life comes to mind.

We were on holiday in Scotland a few years ago and went to a pub. When the people sitting next to us realised we were English they pointedly turned their backs on us. We couldn't help laughing which pissed them off even more. Result!

I don't think English fans would be to happy if he called us Scottish
or Welsh. All's I know is that a lot of Scottish fans are upset. They
are very proud of their heritage and their country. As I am proud of
being English. I don't blame Barry, I blame the guys around him who
didn't tell him. After all these years surely someone knew.

Sorry - but I really have to respectfully disagree.

That was a HUGE blunder. Even I know you avoid the subject of England
entirely when you're in Scotland or Ireland.

When you visit another country, you have to be sensitive to stuff like
this.

Hopefuly Barry will be a lot more careful in Ireland. Having Irish
roots, I'm sure he knows all about the issues the Irish have had with
the English for hundreds of years.

Course Brenda, that's what I love about this newsgroup, can have a say and not, I hope, get flamed.

Trust me when I tell you though Brenda, this English/Welsh/Scottish debacle, is less of a hot potato than many years ago, there are those rightly who are proud of their heritage, as am I, but to phone into radio shows, and not buy another Manilow record, overreaction, yeah much.

And no doubt these will be the same peeps who kick off when Barry does not visit them again for the next however long.

Brenda you make me laugh posting that wiki link lol. From what I have
seen and heard in Scotland, it still is an extremely hot potatoe.
Hense they still have their own notes, they have fought for their own
parliament. They want to be as independent as possible, far far away
from England. Don't get me wrong the Scottish are lovely, but the men
especially don't like to be associated with England full stop. Barry
did say last night that when he returns he will also be going back to
Glasgow. Maybe they will inform him nicely next time :-)

Respectfully Sanli, I guess it depends on whom you talk to. I have just gotten off the phone from my best friend who lives in Edinburgh, she snorted when I made mention of this, said it was a load of knicker knotting for nowt, enough said.

Moving on, am crying with laughter at Garry's tweets, talk about put feet in it, ooops indeed Garry. The comment on Mark W being green, tickled me pink.

Seriously do you really think Barry went over to Ireland on the ferry, OMG.

You are right it does depend on who you talk to. Some people are more
interested and passionate than others. They do have a right to be
upset. Not buying any more records or not going to any more concerts
is a bit extreme for a mistake. But I suppose that's up to them to
decide. On a lighter note, maybe Barry did take a boat pmsl

When we were in NY people kept asking about Australia and at breakfast one day the waitress asked us where we were from and after we replied England she asked us what language we spoke there! We decided not to break off diplomatic relations or boycott American goods - my husband likes his Bourbon too much:)

Marvin: Brenda is right- and usually Barry includes regional quotes
to show he is aware where he is performing.
When Barry performed in Montreal, he said a few words in French and
sang a bilingual verson of If I Should Love Again and wore a Montreal
Canadiens hockey uniform to open the second act of his show.
Recognizing the uniqueness of the city/ country he is in adds to the
excitement of the show.

I will use my finely honed public relations skills regarding the
streamers. Since Barry is an american singer and his country's flag
colors are red, white and blue the streamers actually represents the
colors of the USA not the flag colors of the Union Jack. The colors
being the same are just coincidental. How's that?
