Welcome to the Camp Kendale Alumni Site, dedicated to keeping great
memories and the spirit of Kendale alive.
NAME->Bruce Weinstein
YEARS AT KENDALE->1963-1973
SINCE KENDALE->Since getting fired from Kendale in the Summer of '73 by
Arnie Koppel (my fault) for hitting a camper in the arm at the flagpole,
(a very sad day for ending my loving stint at Kendale), I've kept busy. I
attended SUNY Brockport where I was a DJ (not very good)and TV director,
and majored in Broadcasting and Philosphy. Right after college I moved to
Los Angeles seeking a new life with Annete Funachello and Beach Party
Bingo, but hated the people. Made friends with ex-New Yorkers and endured
11 years there. I was the Tour Manager for Barry Manilow for 6 years; Road
Manager for Bob Dylan, Tom Petty, ELP; Touring lighting tech for The
Clash, YES, Queen, Ted Nugent, etc. Managed Richard Marx for a short time
and helped him put together his first band. I then met my lovely wife
Hanna at the Star Search finals where I was a judge. Got married and took
a job at Disney as technical director, and talent manager. We then had a
son Garett (11 years), and we moved to Larchmont, NY where I was hired as
the Senior Director of Entertainment for Radio City where I stayed for 6
years. Then left and joined Mandalay Entertainent (Gloria; I Know What You
Did Last Summer; Donnie Brasco) as the East Coast VP of Live
Entertainment. After 2 years I left to work for Alan Gerry (Forbes #70) as
Executive Producer and General Manager of GF Entertainment to teach him
the entertainment business and produce live concerts in Bethel NY at the
original Woodstock site. I actually got a house out of the deal on a lake
on the original site. (I was in Kendale in 1969, and just didn't get it,
though my wife was at Woodstock). My wife became pregnant (Everett is now
5 months) and I did not want to be away from home so I quit, and now
produce and stage shows for anyone who will hire me (MTV / VH-1 / Maritz /
President Clinton and the DNC). And now I am one of the producers for
Sting in Central Park this September 12. I have great memories of Kendale.
My son has gone to Camp Island Lake in Penn for the past 2 years and loves
it. No raids yet, but he does have a girl friend.

BTW, there's also a Bruce Weinstein who makes documentary films, and
interviewed many Manilow fans for a supposed upcoming film. I talked to
him years ago, and he seemed like a decent person who wouldn't trash us,
although we never really know for sure how fans will be portrayed. I
don't think that film has ever been made, but here's an article about it:

Scooter, thanks for posting this.
I'm one of those people who always wondered what happened to Bruce. He
was one of the nicest people who ever worked for Barry.
I remember one time ... it was July, 1983, and the BMIFC hotline had
announced when Barry's plane was expected to arrive in Cleveland for
his tour dates at Blossom Music Center (again, this was back when you'd
actually hear this stuff on the hotline - pretty wild, huh?). Anyway,
a handful of friends and I were at the airport and Bruce was there as
well. He looked so uncomfortable sitting at the gate, watching us act
like your typical excited fans ... then, as the plane taxied up to the
gate, he seemed to summon up every ounce of courage that was in him to
say, "Girls - I hope you know that the person you're waiting for isn't
on that plane." Well, we were understandably disappointed ... Barry
had obviously changed his plans at the last minute and only the band
was on the scheduled flight. But I was always impressed at how KIND
Bruce was.
I also remember some friends of mine - who were pretty chummy with
Bruce - hanging out with him in his hotel room one evening. Finally
one person got the nerve to ask him, "Is Barry gay?" (which, back in
1983, was still a pretty loaded question.) Bruce tactfully answered,
"Well, let me put it this way - if you were spending the evening with
Barry, Garry and Roger (Barry's assistant at that time), you'd be
completely safe."
He was always so sweet ... and one person who, when he left Barry's
employment, I was really sorry to see go.
Brenda
hmmmmmmmm...that answers a huge question...I wonder if he was let go
because of "loose lips?"

I do so love an honest man. :-)
Since the edict has always seemed to be that the crew wasn't supposed to
fraternize with the fans, maybe he was let go for being too friendly and
honest with them.

Well, if TPTB found out he was talking to fans, they sure didn't find
it out from any of us. (I may be outspoken, but I'm not stupid!) But
hey ... since it 22 years ago and many, many moons since he's been with
Barry, I guess it's safe to talk about it now.
But no ... being too friendly and honest with the fans is a huge no-no.
Guess it isn't "nice."

My guess is a spy ratted him out. Spies seem to abound in Maniland.

Maybe not, but Bruce sure was. <sigh>
No? Really??? (she said, her voice dripping with raw sarcasm). :-)
Ironic, don't you think ... they sure hate it when anyone from our
lowly ranks sees or hears something inappropriate from their camp, but
they have no qualms about openly spying on us.
Gotta love that double standard.
But I guess it's "nice" when THEY do it.
Brenda
Here's the difference.
Lowly fans were just being told something by an insider.
Whereas THEY count on reports from N.I.C.E:
