Rare Barry?

that's not so easily found. I'm working on the foreign language stuff as a
separate project, so don't include things like the Spanish album or "Especial"
in answering... Question is, just what do you consider to be "rare" Barry? So
far I've got...
from Barry Manilow on Bell: One of These Days / Oh My Lady / Could It Be Magic
/ Sweet Life (they were remixed when Barry Manilow I came out on Arista)
from Barry Manilow II (quad): I Wanna Be Somebody's Baby / It's a Miracle /
Avenue C... these sound a lot different from the stereo versions
from TTGTF (quad): Bandstand Boogie / I Write the Songs / Lay Me Down /
Beautiful Music... again, all different from the stereo versions
from Foul Play: Ready to Take a Chance Again (Reprise: End Titles)
from Oh Julie: Oh Julie! / Heaven
whichever songs are Barry's on the Copa soundtrack (Changing My Tune, Copa '85,
Aye Caramba, etc.)
the 12" dance mixes of I'm Your Man, Hot Tonight, and Hey Mambo
the single version of Could It Be Magic (the original is 7 minutes long... they
edited it down to under four minutes for the single)
duet with Nancy Wilson, from "With My Lover Beside Me"
duet with Cilla Black, "You'll Never Walk Alone"
the single version of "Because It's Christmas" (WITHOUT the Handel intro)
other individual songs: They Gave In to the Blues / Eolia / Nickels and Dimes /
Hangin' on a Nail
now for the questions... what else would we consider "rare"?
"Dirt Cheap" and "Jenny" from the re-issued Greatest Hits 1-3?
"Put a Quarter..." and "Hot Tonight" from the original GH2, now out of print?
"Run to Me" from 20 Greatest Hits?
Whatever song he did for Pebble and the Penguin? And what about "Let Me Be Your
Wings"?
...and what about stuff from his videos that wasn't on albums... like the "bam
bam" version of CIBM or doing "Barry and the Supreme-ilows" to Dirt Cheap
instead of Up Front... stuff like that?
Opinions welcome...

There are two duets that Barry did with Anna Maria Kaufmann on a German
release. "World In Union" and "Could It Be Magic." They are pretty rare.
The Featherbed releases are rare too. "Amy" "Morning" and "Could It Be Magic"
-- Tony Orlando style. The Featherbed version of CIBM that I have is different
from the one on the boxed set.
As far as alternate versions on the videos - I usually take my stereo vcr and
make myself an audio tape of the whole show. Every live version is different
from anything else, IMHO.

was a Bell single and is very rare. Or, some in concert gems, like "Moody's
Mood for Love", "Everyday I get the blues", "Here we go again", "Sugar", "Some
kind of Fox", "Lion sleeps tonight" "Martha & The Vandella's medley".
Just some ideas.

"Hangin' by a Nail." I now know why it never made it to one of the regular
CDs, IMHO. It would have to be considered very rare.

I agree, the Featherbed stuff would be good. Anybody who HAS these in good
condition and is willing to make me copies, I'll pay for tape...
and I completely forgot about those two German-release duets. I don't have
those, either.
As far as the songs he only did in concert, that would be a LOT harder to find
as it's not been released anywhere (as far as we know.) Definitely "Barry Rare"
if found! :-)

That's the only place I've ever seen it. But believe me, it's not worth the
cost of the CD for that song IMHO. I stumbled upon it because of the song I
wanted and not because I was looking for something new and different. Sorry,
but it's not one of Barry's best efforts.

Hi, Susan!
I thank Lucie for posting the lyrics to "Hangin' On A Nail." It was
written by Barry and Hal David. That's the Hal David of Hal David/Burt
Bacharach fame. BTW, David and Bacharach composed the theme for the
1958 classic, "The Blob," starring Steve McQueen, for all you trivia
buffs.
Hal David also wrote the lyrics to Barry's music for "Early Morning
Strangers."
What can I say? My mind is filled with obscure facts. :)

they used CSWY, the same guy who played Mr. Gropper in "Copa-The

Yes, you are right! His name is Ernie Sabella. He's a great actor and person!
I had the great fortune of meeting him once. He does a lot of Broadway shows.
He also works a lot with Nathan Lane. They are a great team! I think he
might have a part in Nathan's new sitcom that starts on NBC this fall.
