Neil was one of the special guests on AI's finale tonight.

I always loved him - he's a brilliant songwriter. Along with John
Denver and Barry Manilow, I lived on his tunes back in the 70s.

But man - sorry to say it - his voice is shot. I felt bad for him.

All the more reason to appreciate Barry. He can still belt 'em out.
How lucky are we???

I saw Neil a number of years ago in concert it was one of the most boring shows I have ever been to.

Neil had no dialog with the audience other than "thank you". He talked through all his songs. To me, he never really sang. I've only seen him once so I have nothing to compare it to. But that seemed to be his stage style.

I've seen Neil in concert maybe four or five times.

Trust me, he used to actually SING the songs, but I noticed recently -
like you - that he often talked through them rather than sang them. I
used to wonder if he did that because his voice was going.

BTW - to bring this back on topic - one of the reasons "Talk To Me" is
not one of my favorites off "Mayflower" is because I feel Barry talks
through the song too much. I would imagine that's probably the point
- given its title - but I'm weird, I prefer my songs sung. :-)

Marvin: Let us hope for all the Diamondheads (Neil's fans as dubbed
by the media) out there that Neil's voice will be getting stronger. He
begins a four month tour of Canadian and American cities next week in
Ft. Lauderdale so if his voice is not what it could be, the word will
spread, reviews will be deservedly bad and the box office sales will
go down.

Marvin: Neil, believe it or not, is shy and reserved. He is very
difficult to interview because of his introspected nature. Maybe that
is why he sings more and could be quite stiff when not singing. It is
difficult for him to share stories on stage like Barry does when he
talks on his grandfather or anything else on stage. But if he really
can't belt out his songs anymore, I think his fans will be
disappointed- I hope I am wrong for his sake as well as the fans who
are going to his concerts.
However, I am looking forward to interviewing Neil with
other reporters in a conference call early next week for articles I am
writing on him in Ft. Lauderdale, Boston, Detroit, Toronto and
Vancouver publications. I will post the articles here when they are
published.

Marvin, I'm sure Neil's fans are as dedicated as Barrys so they will turn up regardless. The songs are iconic.

I've noticed that Chris de Burg (yeah, that "Lady In Red" guy) talks
through a lot of his early stuff ("Spanish Train", "Patricia The
Stripper", and "The Painter" immediately spring to mind). His later
work is pretty much straight singing.

So I guess it's sort of the reverse of the Neil Diamond thing.

"Spanish Train": http://www.mediafire.com/?a77vlcpjvg61h5e
"Patricia The Stripper": http://www.mediafire.com/?phnlnmb86jq4bar
"The Painter": http://www.mediafire.com/?k02lr84dqkj8dag

You're welcome! ;)

Tell him I said "hi".

Just kidding! ;)

Yeah, but his diehards alone can't fill a 20,000-seat arena. He needs
the casual fans/civilians to fill most of those seats.

And I sure won't be one of them.

His appearance on A.I. sealed it for me. I love the guy, but I won't
pay to see/listen to that. It was pathetic, truly.

They all do get older don't they? I'm guessing Neil Young's shows are
pretty much sing-a-longs too, as is Rod Stewart's. A little bit off
the topic of Neil Young is that I noticed Van Halen cancelled the rest
of their tour, and it just got started, so fans are left in a lurch
for the same sort of things I'm sure when other artists that cancel.
No reason given. These guys are aging too, most in their later
fifties. So to be fair, if Van Halen can't handle a tour, then they
shouldn't start one. It's not fair to their fans either unless of
course one of them is ill or an extreme emergency takes them away. I
believe if an artist starts something then they should finish it.
This ideal I don't behold only to Barry, as professionals bands and
others should honor what they embark on.

Beanz, I saw a story about the Van Halen tour and they pretty mich admitted they bit off more than they could chew and needed to take time off to rest so they could come back with the best show possible.

Seemed pretty lame to me. I'm thinking there's more to it and they are just not saying.

Just goes to show anyone can cancel and no show is guaranteed.

Speaking of older performers canceling, did you see where Elton John
had to abruptly cancel the rest of his Vegas shows because of a severe
upper respiratory infection?

I'm sure his fans who were planning to see him are really bummed.

Sure want to wish him a speedy recovery.

Jus
Just goes to show they are all human like the rest of us and shit happens. Time marches on and no one stays young forever......maybe Barry is the exception? His voice is as strong as ever and he doesn't seem to have any intentions of slowing down - at least not yet.

My personal opinion (even though no one asked for it) is both Diamond and Rod S. are washed up (or close to it) but then I was never a Rod S. fan to begin with. I also like to hear the songs sung and not spoken. I saw Diamond just got married again, the old fart! lol And how many times is it for Rod? They seem to treat marriage like a tissue - when it's used up and served its purpose, just throw it away and get another one. Such is life. I wouldn't want to be married to any entertainer. I like my privacy.

Marvin: I think it would be far worse if Elton tried to sing and
could not and then his fans would be forced to sit through a show that
was not worth the money,

Marvin: I did not see the show Brenda. Are you sure that Neil was
that bad? The message board from Neil's fans said that Neil sounded
great with much vigor and swagger. Maybe the Neil fans see and hear
what they hope to see and hear from him.

I saw the show. Trust me, he sucked the big hairy meatball.

And, on other websites (I think Television Without Pity is one of
them) he's taking quite a beating.

I'm sure Neil - just like Barry - has brain-numbed fans who would rave
about his performance if he stood on stage and coughed the phone
book.

Marvin: I don't know about Rod Stewart, but Neil Diamond seems to
have a lot of vigor in him since he got married last month to his
manager. Neil seems happy, was inducted into both the R&R Hall and the
Kennedy Center Honors and his third wife, being 30 years younger than
Neil and younger than some of his children, will keep Neil hopping and
young. I wish him good luck and a long marriage.

Marvin: Thanks for the youtube link. I was not impressed with Neil.
I think, considering he is 71, he did OK, but his voice is far from
what it used to be. Hopefully, he will sound better when I see him in
concert in Ft. Lauderdale next Friday.
