Problem is, Barry White passed away last year.
How EMBARRASSING!!!
Did Barry really have to be BLEEPED?? Oh my.
On a serious note....I KNEW that the 12 finalists would end the whole
medley with a Barry song. They REALLY paid him a big tribute by ending
with "I Made It Through The Rain". Barry's songs are totally great for
BIG finishes.
How EMBARRASSING!!!
I also loved that they saved Barry's song for the finale. It was totally
appropriate.
The thing with the make-up artist was too funny!
Susan
I thought it was hysterical! Barry REALLY out of context! If you study
his expression (in my opinion) - it was one of sheer disbelief! Classic!
dave
I smell a bit of a rat with that whole scenario. I think the makeup girl was
set up on purpose. For one thing, it was weird that they were filming that at
all. For another, she must've been told that the person she was supposed to be
touching up was a person of color, otherwise she wouldn't have come in with
only that specific kind of makeup. She was also obviously told it was just
someone name Barry, not specifically Barry Manilow. I think the whole thing
was a setup for the sole purpose of being used on a gag reel.
Debra mentioned to Barry that she (the makeup artist) had to change colors (of
makeup). That's when Barry cracked up. Hilarious!
Cheryl

I thought so too. Disbelief and annoyance. He didn't look pleased at all,
IMO. Debra's reaction to it was priceless.
>
> I didn't quite catch the exchange between Debra and Barry after
> that. What did they say?
I think right after it happened, Debra said, "Breathe, breathe" to Barry,
then there was some crosstalk I couldn't make out. Then Barry said
something about it being too "bleeping" depressing, and Debra told him that
the makeup person said she had to go back and get a different color makeup
(since she misidentified who Barry was), which made Barry laugh. Credit to
him, he was able to go from what appeared to be annoyance to laughing about
it in a matter of seconds.

It probably wasn't so hilarious for her, as she came off looking foolish. In
fact it didn't do Barry any favors, either, as he came off as a bit of a prima
donna.
But, who cares? It was still funny.

I don't think Barry is that good of an actor to stage that scene. My do
those eyes of his know how to talk !
Lynn
I'm new here. Is there room for one more?
I wondered about that clip being a set-up too. But it was a real hoot
to watch the expression on Barry's face.
And I must admit that I only got a quick glance at Debra. Has she lost a
significant amount of weight? Honestly I did not immediately recognize
her.
And as far as the bleeping, I wonder if it was a true bleep or a way to
make the clip even funnier?
ElaineOH
P.S. Thanks Brenda !!

Did you see, when the makeup girl was coming into the room, Barry stepped
backward toward the wall--he didn't come forward toward her. Like he was
testing her, and she failed.
Chris
I thought it was funny too!

Butler,
Do you think you could ever possibly give Barry any slack? He didn't come
across as a prima donna to me, and probably not to most of us. It seemed as if
he were someone who had a right be slightly annoyed that someone who had been
working there as long as this girl had, didn't seem to have the slightest idea
of who he was. He had probably been in the studio for more than a day by that
time; she should have some idea. Even if it was a setup, it was still funny,
and once he got over his initial annoyance, he was able to laugh with everyone
else. I thought he came across as human as the rest of us.
It seems that you're the only one who found something negative to say about
him. Why is it, I'm not surprised by that?
I didn't say it was staged by Barry. In fact I'm sure he never would have
reacted as he did had he known it was being filmed for eventual airing to the
public.
Manilow swears (as my mother would say) like stevedore, so I'm sure it was a
"true bleep."
I just watched this clip. It was hysterical! The expression on Barry's
face was priceless. And Debra was so very Debra. I just love her
interaction with Barry. And since I've seen other interviews where he's
used the "F" word (one where it wasn't bleeped), I'm guessing a derivation
of it is what was bleeped here. It was great to hear his genuine laugh,
too. Whether or not it was a set up, doesn't matter. It was a true
moment. I'm very glad they showed it.
Who cares.
My first thought was "Candid Camera"!
Susan
Nahhh ... I'm sure it only helped him look more "real." Anytime Barry cusses
in public I'm sure his "nerd" factor goes down a couple of notches. :-)
Brenda
Ha! You are so right. This was truly a priceless look through a crack in
the door. :)
Okay, now try to see it like a non-Barry worshipper. He didn't look cute, he

donna.

new and completely different?

Exactly, it's not Barry resurged like Tony Bennett in the 90's either
you know. Many young kids didn't flock to buy Barry CD's like they did
for Tony. You gotta consider that too.

Since I don't worship Barry, I did look at this like a non-Barry worshipper.
He looked annoyed, which is understandable, as I'm sure this bruised his ego.
But he did not look like a grumpy old prima donna.
Perhaps you need to look at it like someone who doesn't sit like a vulture to
pounce on anything you preceive to be negative about the man.
You make us all so very tired.
Oh thank goodness I thought I was the only one!!!
Alex : )
Who swears? Or whose mother equates all bad behaviors with stevedores?
First of all, you're not "us all." Secondly, your comment about me is neither
true nor fair, and your nastiness was completely uncalled for. And, lastly,
you make it clear you think everything Manilow does is delightful. My point
was and is that not everyone feels that way about him, and when those folks see
him in that clip the impression they come away with is not one of being
refreshingly candid, but of being a grumpy prima donna.
And then you whine and wonder how discussions devolve into flame wars. Grab a
couple of mirrors, girls, and think about it.
Who swears!!!
But I would love the "stevedores" explained...

Then you obviously don't read all my posts. A sycophant, I am not. Just ask
Garry Kief. But I don't agree with your comment about this clip. And
several other people don't either.
Then fine -- you don't agree with my comment about his clip. That doesn't
justify you turning it into a personal attack against me in the manner you did.
Your comments were inappropriate and not at all called for, and they were
solely yours, not "several other people's."
Show of hands - who fell into that "several other people's" grouping of
Scooter's?
Count me in, baby
Brenda
My hand is raised too.

Now maybe the torch-wielding mob could take a moment to read what I actually
wrote instead of what they wished I'd write to justify their cattiness: I said
Scooter's comments were Scooters -- she made them, no one else. It would
absolutely kill her -- or any of you, frankly -- to take responsibility for her
own bad behavior, that's been obvious far too many times. I'll just look
forward to the next time she crows about how she stays above it all. Right.
I love Barry's music and talent. I don't worship him. He totally looked
like a pissy, prissy old queen who was upset that this makeup artist
didn't know who he was.
Please note, I didn't say he *was* an old queen, I am simply saying he
LOOKED like one. I just watched my tape of this show late last night,
and actually played that scene over a few times. I was taken aback and
how BAD I thought he reacted to it. I love Barry's music, but didn't
like his air of "self importance", and I don't think he looked cute at
all.
God forbid there is someone on this planet who doesn't know him or
recognize who he is.
I won't aplogize for my opinion, but I think his reation was totally
uncalled for, and in bad form, regardless of whether he knew the camera
was on.......

If you read it from the beginning, the first insult was served by you to
me, not me to you. So just leave me alone.
No one insulted you. That's just ridiculous. For one thing, you weren't
singled out. If you decided to take what I said -- which wasn't insulting in
itself anyway -- and apply it to yourself, that was your choice, not something
I did. Your response was ridiculously nasty and over the top, not to mention
not even based in reality. You've done this several times, Scooter, and you've
yet to take responsibility for your own bad behavior. All I'm saying is don't
lecture me or anyone else on newsgroup behavior when you yourself are as guilty
of anyone of being a nasty bitch.

Sorry, but when you reply to my post (no one else's) with, "Okay, now try
to see it like a non-Barry worshipper," you were calling me a "Barry
worshipper." You weren't calling anyone else a "Barry worshipper." So, I
retaliated in kind.

Oh, it was based in reality. And if my name is on it, I took
responsibility for it. And my name is on all my posts.

A bitch, I am not. Nasty, I am not. But I will stand up for myself when
someone insults me by referring to me as a Barry worshipper, which you
did.
Since you love to participate in endless loop discussions, you'll have to
go on by yourself because I'm stepping out of this one. I made my point,
and any thinking person can see why I posted the way I did.
You didn't "retaliate in kind." First of all, how ridiculous is it that the
phrase "Barry worshipper" makes you feel you have the need or right to
"retaliate" for anything? Secondly, because it happened to be your post I was
replying to hardly makes everything in it about you -- how egomaniacal is that?
Would you have felt less wounded if I'd said "avid Manilow fan"? How about
you submit a list of approved phrases folks are allowed to use around here
without you resorting to nuclear weapons?

Really? It was? You show me ten instances of me saying something negative
about Barry, and I'll show you 50 instances of me saying something positive.
And, while we're at it, why is it okay for people like you or Brenda or any of
the other wet hens on this group to make snide comments about Manilow, but if I
do it, you go insane?

If you're point is that you're a fucking lunatic and a hypocrite to boot,
you're absolutely right -- point definitely made.
And P.S. -- precisely how drunk was your mother when she file a birth
certificate for you with the name "Scooter"? Your name isn't on any of your
posts.
And a keyboard of poison. Please don't tell me what a saint Scooter is. I've
been the victim of her vitriole enough on this group to know better.
Both feet firmly planted in Scooter's group!
Deb
Geez, did the Walgreens run out of Midol???
Thank God drugstores are open on the holiday.
Once again, how screwed up are you that you feel the need to divide people into
groups or sides? This isn't a war. It's not a fight. It's not even a
discussion. If you want a group, try group therapy.

According the May 21, 2004 hotline on www.manilow.com, the UM DVD has been
certified gold. (I'm assuming it's the UM DVD, as they call it the
"Ultimate Live" DVD - which could either be "Ultimate Manilow" or "Manilow
Live")

Very true - it is a very good show. I'll have to watch it again soon (I've
only watched it once, when it was first released through the fan club). I
love seeing the outtakes, hearing the audio commentary, etc.
Kelly
BTW, I would love for them to release "Live on Broadway" as a DVD, with some
audio commentary from Barry included (talking about the Gershwin run, that
tour, the other musicians/singers on stage, etc.). That is my favorite
Manilow video ever.
Kelly
From your keyboard, to TPTB's brains. I love that video, and would so love
it as a DVD. And commentary would be great! That was my favorite tour ever.
I think UM sells over and over because it's become the Manilow Greatest Hits
Album of record - all the studio versions that people grew up with crammed
(in a good way - UM has a LOT of tracks) on one disk.
