BELIEBERS, BARBIES, AND CLAYMATES:

The 25 Coolest Nicknames Of Music Fan Bases

From the article:

The world is full of obsessed music lovers – I just hope someday when
throngs of admirers come to see me in concert (hopefully they like
horrible singing), they have a nickname as cool as these.

1. Fanilows – fans of Barry Manilow. The Fanilows have been around for
quite some time, but really reached a pop culture high when a Will &
Grace episode titled “Fanilow” outed Will as a Barry fan.

2. Beliebers – fans of Justin Bieber. It appears that the “Belieber”
tag came from the depths of Internet fandom, but some belieb the
nickname was created by a malevolent force. Hey, you know who’s a
Belieber? Johnny Depp.

3. Little Monsters – fans of Lady Gaga. Would you believe Lady Gaga
has only been using that term for her fans since the summer of 2009?
The name is derived from her album The Fame Monster.

We were never called "fanilows" until that Will and Grace episode.

Stupid nickname. Totally hate it. Glad Barry doesn't care for it
much either.

I despise that "Fanilows" too. Barry usually refers to the fans as
"Friends". I just wish that this stupid nickname would vanish!!!!
Ugh!!!

But ... truthfully, I strongly dislike ... Fanilow.

I curse that damned Will and Grace episode whenever it airs and any
"marketing genius" that picked up on it.

Someone at the Hilton M store told us that TPTB wouldn't take out the
"fanilow" merchandise, as it is the first thing shoppers ask for.

Another "fanilow" hater here. Barry knows we dislike it. He's
acknowledged that a couple of time in interviews. But, what can he do?
It has stuck, it's publicity and it sells merchandise.

I can't stand being called a Fanilow. It sounds so Jr. High to me. I'm
so glad Barry doesn't like it either. The ones that like the term and
buy the merchandise with that on it are probably the obsessed ones or
the civilians. I wish it would go away for good. It's degrading to
say the least.

I think the media likes to mostly portray adult fans as emotionally
stunted children, so of course they're going to love assigning a silly
label such as "fanilow" to their victims. Sure, it's degrading, but I
think the general consensus is we somehow deserve to be degraded.

I, too, dislike the term "fanilow". Whenever someone mentions, "oh,
you're a fanilow" I correct them and say, "No, I'm a fan of Barry
Manilow"!.

I found one that is worse than fanilow ... If that's possible.

I don't have a problem with 'fanilow.' I had more of a problem when Barry referred to non-fans as 'civilians' which he doesn't use anymore. It's only the media picked up on 'fanilow' to make it mean something it was never intended to be. The more fans express their dislike the more it is used negatively. If fans reclaimed the word and used it for themselves the negative connotation would disappear. Barry couldn't have disliked it that much to appear in the Will & Grace episode about it.

I don't have a problem with the term fanilow either. I'm neither obsessed nor a civilian. I don't consider myself to be a friend of Barry as we have never met. Some of the other names such as Manilow Maniac or Maniloonie sound just as daft to me as fanilow. What's in a name - a rose by any other name would smell as sweet, or something like that.

And the fact that Barry has said he doesn't like it doesn't automatically make me not like it as well. (Incidentally I'm sure on one British TV interview not a million years ago he said he thought it "kinda cute".

Lady Gaga calls her fans little monsters? Not bad. I am much more interested in how she came up with the name Lady Gaga for herself- that name sounds even more stupid than fanilow. I guess one never knows what sticks as a title. Marvin
