I thought I'd take this to a separate discussion to keep the confusion
down on the other discussions.

I got into Macs because I work on them at the school I work at, so I'm
trained on some, but not all of what you can do on a Mac. For that, I
use the Apple site and the Apple geniuses at their store. You can
also take free workshop classes at their stores to learn more hands-
on. You have to sign up for the classes, but it's easy and FREE!

If you are looking to change from a PC to Mac, or if you are new to
the Mac world, there are some tips to help you out.

Here is one: There are some basic tutorial videos Apple has made for
their computers, and they can show you a lot.

http://www.apple.com/findouthow/mac/#pctomac

Here is the Switch 101 mentioned in the video, these don't have video
tutorials, but can walk you through the switch.

http://www.apple.com/support/switch101/

For those new to Mac: http://www.apple.com/support/mac101/

For those who love the Mac but would love to know about those keyboard
shortcuts:

Great Information - Thank you!

I'm moving to Apple because I'm tired of playing roulette w/Windows.
One friend has used mostly Macs and raved about them for years (even
when she had to temporarily shift to a PC). The reviews I've read and
commentary from other users impressed me not only about the quality of
the machines, but the quality of the company behind them.

The reason why there is such good quality in the machines can be
accounted for the fact that Apple produces both the software and the
hardware together and does so in order to make a complete package.
For this reason Apple does not allow other hardware companies to use
it's software. Microsoft only make software and it's - as you say
roulette - as to whether the software will work with the hardware it's
running on. There's a lot that has to work right behind the scenes of
that desktop in order for the software and hardware to talk to each
other and make what you want to happen occur.

There's been battles between HP, Dell vs. Microsoft on this and the
companies are finally getting smart and offering Red Had Linux (a user
friendly verison of Unix) as an option for an operating system other
than Microsoft. It doesn't have the mass market of software to work
with it, but if you want to run something on your HP that isn't going
to crash, Linux is your best bet, not Microsoft.

My server administrator classes in college ran off of Linux, not
Microsoft, and for good reason. :o)

You are very welcome for the information. :o)

Does Intel know that? Or Micron? or maybe Maxtor/Seagate? Because not
only are all those parts in a PC..they're also in a Mac. Apples does
design some of their hardware but for the most parts if you open them up
they're the same parts you'll find in a PC. that wasn't always the case
but it is now.

they don't allow it in their license for OSX but it's very possible to
run Snow Leopard on a PC with an intel processor. Intel makes processors
for Apple and Dell and Acer and Toshiba and the list goes on and on and
on.

actually its the other way around. if your computer meets the minimum
specs for the operating system it will run windows. usually the problem
is you need drivers for older components like modems and such and the
manufacturer of those components haven't kept up support with their
drivers to work with newer operating systems so that isn't Microsofts
fault. I have an Imac that won't run Snow Leopard no matter what because
it has a G4 processor instead of an Intel. I can show you a PC thats even
older that will run windows xp as a matter of fact I'm writing this on an
11 year old PC running windows 7.

HP.. I can tell you HP is the worst computer made. they don't even stand
behind their garbage products anymore. my friend has a two year old
laptop that shipped with a faulty motherboard and HP refuses to replace
it even though it is a known problem with that certain model. as for
linux I haven't played much with Red Hat lately because it isn't free but
I've had my time with Ubuntu and kubuntu and neither are even close to
the ease of windows. pop a cd in your drive and windows will lead you
through the install..with linux if the software isn't available in a
repository you'll find yourself doing command line stuff like "apt sudo"
and most people won't have a clue what to do at that point.

by the way..only 2 weeks after it's release, Windows 7 had surpassed both
Snow Leopard and Linux in market share and Windows still continues to
dominate market share of both business and home users. Windows controls
about 92% of the market last time I checked with Windows xp still at the
top. even Vista has a larger market share than OSX.

Microsoft Windows (whatever version) has had a larger market share
than Apple for many years, because of it's predatory policies with
regards to computer makers. It's only because they've been slapped
with so many anti trust lawsuits that they've had to soften up.

Yes, you could run OS X on a PC, but why would you? It won't run as
well as it will on an Apple computer, because the parts have been
tested as a package by Apple in order to make sure they give a
superior performance.

Now, about superiority of operating systems? Everyone in computing
knows Apple's OS X is more stable than Windows. Yes, both need
updates, but Windows 7 has already had that embarrassing "black screen
of death" pop up with one of their latest updates. And what's with 6
different versions? I use both Apple and PC and I was confused as to
which one to get.

I'm sorry to hear about the motherboard issue you've had with HP.
They are actually very good about standing behind their products, it's
usually Dell you have to worry about. My late husband (an computer
engineer) and I only bought HP's and when I buy a PC, it's HP. Dells
have gotten better, but only because of the pissed off customers
getting tired of shoddy engineering in order to save a few bucks.
When you buy a computer, you get what you pay for.

BTW, in 2007, his MAC laptop didn't change to daylight saving time. I
suppose he needed to change a setting? Or perhaps it was a bug? My PC
does changes the time automatically.

BTW, it did finally change to DST about three weeks after the time changed in
March. Maybe he caught the booboo, and hit his MAC with a rolled up
newspaper to jar it into action. ;-)

There's a setting that will automatically do it for you. You just
have to turn it on. :o) Maybe he could invite me out to his home in
Palm Spring (preferably without makeup) and I'll show him how it
works. :o)

My first computer was a Mac (we called in the MacInDos because you
could hit CTRL + something and there was a Windows/Dos side too. Have
had two desktop HPs and a laptop HP and I'm back to Mac for my
cartooning, etc. I love it. It runs cool, it's intuitive, the Adobe
software runs about the same. I don't like that some software runs
more and that Macs run a little more and I wish they were made in the
US instead of China.

Mac fan here.

I have both. I have no problems with anything except that statement about
macs being somehow superior. they aren't. Apple makes a pretty package.
their computers look slick and you pay for that. They share many of the
same components.

go to any repair shop and you'll see more HP's than any other computer. HP
used to stand behind their products. these days they don't. the thing
is..people don't know. they don't research they only assume. they walk into
best buy and see a Toshiba a HP and a Mac. the Mac is way too expensive and
the HP looks pretty. the salesman is usually no help in deciding because he
usually knows less about the product than you do. most people leave with
the HP because its a good deal and the truth is both the mac and the
toshiba are better machines.

I kinda think it has a lot more to do with pricing than lawsuits. when
you can get a comparable PC for about half what you'd pay for a mac most
people will opt to save the cash.

have you ever tried it? I have. it runs fine.

I don't because it's not. my Toshiba never caught fire in my lap

The problem you're referring to was caused by third party video drivers.
didn't happen to me so I can't say much more. I think if you do some
research you'll find that people are for the most part very happy with
windows 7. maybe Clive Davis and Bill Gates are friends..thats why there
are so many different versions of windows 7.

correction..HP USED to be very good about standing behind their products.
They no longer do. do a Google search. quality and HP no longer go hand
in hand.

Dell has gotten better because Michael Dell came back but their
reputation was tarnished already.

to an extent yes. Macs are overpriced.

by the way I was thinking of the wrong thing here. the issue i was thinking
of involved the beta or test verion of windows 7. I believe you were
referring to this from last november:

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/technology/microsoft/6709584/Microsoft-Windows-
7-Black-Screen-of-Death-blamed-on-malware.html

Microsoft got a formal apology from the company that issued the original
statement as it seems this issue was actually caused by malware not windows
updates.
