I'm in Miami,Florida...In 1974 or maybe early 1975,the late Alan Burke,the
infamous
talk show host from New York was living in Miami and was doing a daily local
tv
talk show on Channel 6....One day the topic was UFOS and aliens....part of
the show
included members of the audience walking to the microphone and submitting
their experiences and comments,etc....I saw(or I think I saw) Andy Kaufman
on that show
at the microphone doing his Latka/alien/gibberish talking act to Alan
Burke,claiming
that he was an alien living on earth or something to that effect....Keep in
mind that
this was Kaufman prior to Saturday Night Live .I remember(or I think I
do)that Kaufman was wearing a pink coat and probably white pants..I also
think that this
wasn't a "planted" performance by Kaufman;where the producers of the show
and
the host are "in" on the joke..I don't think Alan Burke was "in" on the joke
at all.because Kaufman kept doing his shctick and Burke seemed to be in a
hurry to
get him off the microphone..
My question is ..Can anyone confirm this appearance by Andy in Miami at that
time?
It is possible that Andy just walked in the studio as an audience member
just to bother Alan Burke...Alan Burke could be rather pompous and seemed
like a perfect
foil for Kaufman's brand of humor, and Andy being from New York;he probably
listened to Burke's shows throughout the years and just wanted to do his
"shctick"
to Alan Burke....Or he could have been booked on the show as a "plant"...
Any info will ease my mind ...(I've had this question for 25 years!!!!!)

Yes, It really happened. It was the Alan Burke show and the way I remember it, Andy was a 'random' guest in the audience. The show's topic was UFOs and he stood up and started that latka type voice, talking about how he's scared and he's afraid they are gonna come get him, about then acting as if he's gonna cry. I was watching with my father and brother and we all thought it was brilliant. We were 'pretty' sure he was puttin' on, but we weren't positive. I think I remember my dad saying at the time that Andy had been on before that time too. Later when we started seeing him on other shows, we remembered that performance and were life-long fans of his. I was around 10 at the time and still remember how we all laughed. I know you posted this years ago, but thought it may still be a splinter in your mind

I remember it like it was yesterday, I felt so embarrass for the guy he barely could speak English(not knowing it was Andy).

Later I saw him other shows including a special with Dick Van Dyke he impersonated Elvis and fooled me and all my friends. I was like 10 and became a huge fan of him.

I'm replying some years after you posted, but I've been thinking about that incident lately and was wondering if it had been documented. Yes, I remember it vividly. I was a teenager in south Florida during the 1970's and used to watch Alan Burke's show regularly. In this installment, Burke or his guest had used the stock phrase, "little green men", in an ironic sense. Later, when audience members came to the microphone to ask questions, this guy showed up with a funny look on his face and strange accent which couldn't be placed -- he started talking and expressed his concerns about these "little green men". Burke some how cut him off and sent him away, but he got back in line and was at the microphone a second time. At the end of the show, Burke was saying good-bye to his guest (Who remembers the guest's name now?!) and the audience, and he pointed at the odd man still in the studio and said something like, "And you! I want to speak to you after the show!" Years later, a new comedian named Andy Kaufman started appearing on TV, and the first time I saw him introduced with his real name, I recognized him right away -- almost slapped my forehead and said, "It's that guy who was afraid of the little green men"!

A little curious - was it "funny" to you as an audience member? Did you
recognize it as some sort of performance, something amusing to the
audience? :-)
