Falcons/Hawks

I am compiling a general dictionary for publication and wonder whether
any kind falconer could help me with the following definitions.

Falcon/Hawk
I understand that narrow definitions of these terms places them in
different families (Accipitridae and Falconidae); however, am I right
in thinking that for a falconer there is a wider definition of 'hawk'
to refer to any of the birds of prey used in falconry, including birds
narrowly defined as falcons?

Could you also tell me whether 'tiercal' (or 'tercal') refers only to
female falcons and not to hawks (in the narrow definition)?

Any assistance you can give this ignorant non-falconer would be much
appreciated.

I'm sorry. For 'female falcons' in my original question read 'male
falcons' -- just a slip!
