The afr FAQ actually covers this.... but since I like ya, Ill let ya
in on it, at least from my take.

Years ago, when AFR was *much* smaller than it is now, Justin Little
had an idea. He had been watching goings on for a while, and decided
that as a nice gesture, he would bestow upon twelve women in AFR the
title of Goddess, in accordance with their unique, er...
personalities. He did this as a gesture of friendship, and in fun,
and it was very very sweet, and those of us who were in that original
group of 12 were extremely honored, and flattered and to this day wear
the titles Justin bestowed upon us in our sigfiles, and try to live up
to the spirit in which they were given as best we can.
In return, Michele (aka Columbina) decided to return the favor and
make up a list of 12 Gods. She did not do this alone. At least a few
of the Gods(and demi gods) came from me, and indeed, some horse
trading took place between she and I(and I still maintain I got the
*much* better end of that deal...) These titles were given in the
spirit of the original 12 that Justin handed out.
A lot of things have happened since then. AFR is enormous compared to
the way it used to be. And people have adopted their own titles
sometimes, although I daresay that those of us who were in the
original 24 view this with a bit of a sigh, as we were there for the
original gesture, and wish like hell that something *else* would have
been invented for these new folk, since the meaning of the original
and the time in which it came about has long since past. But for the
most part, we keep silent about that (except in the case of when
people out and out ask, like you did).
The convention on AFR of nominating another person for a title such as
these still is held by most. Some people just name themselves
whatever. The only rule that still seems to hold true is to not step
on the toes of something that has already been awarded, for that would
just not be cool at all.

Yeah, though I can't say that my title is one of "knowledge" rather than a
state of mind. I haven't been able to play here nearly as much as I used to,
no good Scottish-Italian fights and the like, but I was truly honored by my
title when it was bestowed, and I was honored to be able to name Liz MacLaren
with her title before Elf, the Poof and I sat down and brainstormed to come up
with the list of men we wanted to mention (and elf, even though his title fits
PERFECTLY, you did get the better of the deal). I kept all the original posts
because they meant something to me. I even have both Grant's and my poem's.
I try, in a way, to live up to the persona offered me, and though I rarely even
hear it mentioned now, in jest or not, I still think of it fondly and thank
Justin over and over in my mind for making me feel so special.

I have to add my applause for Elf's well defined explaination. She captured
the spirit completely. Although I am not much of a poster these days, i am
lurking out here, reading from time to time when I can, and also agree with Our
Mead Godess, we try to live up to the spirit of the awarded title.

I would like to join this Temple of Procrastination. I often proclaim "I'm a
procrastinator & damn I'm good at it"! I put off fixing my computer for ten
months. It's not like I had to pay for it, it was under warrenty! I'm usually
still working on garb at 2-3am on Friday night/Saturday morning to wear that
day! Sometimes even at 8am that morning!!
