Since my family is apart this year this Xmas has been a rather quiet one. To
break up the day, my sister and I went out to see the first showing of
GalaxyQuest in my area. I loved it. It was funny. I guess it is more funny
for those of us that have gone to conventions. I'm not talking the Sci-fi
conventions they have now in most areas I'm talking the old Creation
Conventions. There they had many guests from Dr. Who, Blakes 7, and Star Trek.
The convention would literally fill most of the convention area at the bigger
hotels in Philly. Just watching GalaxyQuest took me back to those days. <G>
The movie in itself was entertaining. My sister (a non convention go-er)
thoroughly enjoyed it. Sourgoney<sp> Weaver was great..looks good as a blonde.
Tim Allen was good but could have taken the role farther than he did. I am
horrible with names!! The one character who played the alien on the mock TV
show GalaxyQuest was also in the movie Dogma (he was the angel Meditron<sp?>) I

We used to always go to movies on Christmas night (small family and no
relatives nearby.) It stopped the last two years when I would take call on
Christmas Day to let the people with small kids enjoy their day. We live ten
minutes from the hospital where I used to work, so we could still enjoy
Christmas around the emergency (and not so emergency, thank you very much, Dr.
Grinch) cases. The other person on with me is Jewish, so we would announce
that "The Single Girl and The Jewish Girl" would be happy to take Christmas Day
call...again...
I'm a contract girl now...no holidays for me anymore! *snoopydance* I'm not
missing the 20 hours I put in last Christmas one iota.
It's been a very Merry Christmas here. Lots of friends and family in and out
of here since 11am. (However, 'twould have been merrier if I could have had
one more person around this holiday *g*) Would have been nice to catch a movie
with the parents, tho...

Yes... he is a great actor and I really loved him in Sense and Sesibility. He
does need to get his teeth fixed though.

And conversely, I'm Jewish and my family never went to movies on Christmas
day. Now, that may also have to do with the fact that a) my mother
converted prior to marrying my father, so we have goyishe relatives <g> and
b) my parents owned a retail store so Christmas day was the one day we could
count on everyone being off and together.
I never went to a movie on Christmas day until last year, (I'm in an
interfaith marriage) when my father in law, who was raised Catholic,
suggested we all go. My sister in law and kids went to see the ST:TNG
movie, my father in law, husband and I went to see 'Elizabeth'. :)

All that stuff (including some quality time cleaning up the wrapping
paper, wresting the ribbons away from the cat, trying to get the cat to
sit still long enough for you to take a Festive Holiday Photo of it
with bows stuck to it's head, playing with the boxes, etc) is usually
done by 5-ish. Maybe 6 or 7 if dinner is a huge fambly affair, or
you've got people stopping over throughout the day. Still plenty of
time to make a 9:30pm showing of Toy Story 2, which is where Joe and I
ended up last night. We had considered Galaxy Quest, but I had heard
that it wasn't as funny as it looked. Now I know better, but holy
cows, did we laugh at Toy Story 2. GO SEE THIS MOVIE! Hysterical.
And stay for the outtakes....you'll be glad you did.
Now, regarding Dogma....there's an Angel Metatron? Don't tell me Dogma
is really "Good Omens" and I just didn't know it! Somebody, please,
what's the deal with this? I haven't gotten around to seeing it, and
they didn't have it at the theater last night. GAH!

I think one of his better roles was as De Valera in "Michael Collins".
More than any other of his, that one i _really_ had to dig through
the accent and looks to realize it was really him.

When I read "Good Omens" this summer, I kept thinking of the script of "Dogma"
a friend swiped from the internet for me. Not the same (I *still* haven't seen
"Dogma," therefore, I suck), but I now confuse the two (I tried explaining it
to Lars before the movie came out, and badly I might add. I ended up telling
him about "Good Omens" for about five minutes...)
Gotta see "Dogma." Bug, we'll make plans, as we are gonna be in some of the
same places soon? (if we can find a place where it is showing, that is.)

We (Peg!, Peglette, Tiger Jim, my son Josh, and I) just came home from seeing
it, and it WAS as funny as it looked. I laughed all the way through it. And a
new phrase was born, "doing a Fleegal," which is when a minor (usually guest)
character in a sci-fi series gets killed before the first commercial break.
You'll have to see the Galaxy Quest to get that one.

It was actually rather hilarious... problem was.. .the night I saw it with my
cousin.... she and I (and some guy in the back) were the only ones that stayed
for the whole think.. (I think some people had *issues* with the religious
debates going on in the movie (it was a predominantly black theater and I guess
they thought Chris Rock was going to do stand-up or something)) Ironically
enough.. I saw Dogma on a night that I will never forget, not because of the
movie but because of extraordinary events that took place during the night and
that entire weekend... wow.. life sucks all of a sudden....
On the bright side... nothing wrong with going to the movies on Thanksgiving
and Xmas.... just another way to pass the boredom away.

Metraton, or one of the many spelling variations, is from the medieval jewish
Qaballah (also has many spelling variations). He's the angel who led the
isrealites out of the desert. He appears as a pillar of fire (movie got
that right). Metranon is the mightiest of the angels, ranking above
the four archangels. He is the Voice of God, because if God him/her/it self
spoke, mortal ears could not withstand the sound.
Pratchett and Gaiman just culled out some good bits of judeaic lore when
they picked names. Azrael also shows up in Dogma, with a completely different
role. If you're going to work off a particular set of traditions, of _course_
you'll get overlapping names.

We just saw 'End of Days', the Arnold Schwartzenegger film. Interesting
movie, until they used a pentagram to indicate the temple of the Satan
worshippers....then I just got mad.

*chuckles* My cousin (yes, the one married to the drummer from Jethro
Tull) went to high school and junior college with Tom Selleck... he had
a horrible crush on her, but she liked his best friend, and broke his
heart. Everyone called him Little Tommy Selleck (he has two older
brothers, both several inches taller than him). My mom had some dealings
with his brother Tim back in her commercial real estate days in Southern
California. He's somewhat of a mogul.

Always liked Alan Rickman, esp as Col. Brandon. I have such a soft spot in my
heart for that film (coincided with a time in my life when some of the themes
hit so close to home I could have *been* Elinor...)
However, to me, he always looked clammy and sorta infested with disease in PoT
*ew* Yeah, yeah...clammy icky dirtiness is authentic, but I'm big on
hygeine...that's just my thing...

IMHO that I've ever seen, for once Mr. Darcy had *feeling* other then as a
stuck up snob who looked down his nose on everyone who all of a sudden turns
into a simpering idiot begging for Elizabeths love. LOL I love Laurence
Olivier but please Colin Firth did Mr. Darcy a lot better, just wish he didn't
have the semi-unshaved look about him sometimes.

I know how you feel about hygeine.... some of those guys on TV think that the
sweaty "Look, I've been working out" look is somehow attractive. Does the word
"Ewww" come to mind? Oh, what do I know? I'm going around like the walking
dead at the moment, but I at least have the excuse that I woke up from a couple
of hours of tossing a turning to take some more Robitussin for this darn cold.

I'm not a Colin Firth fan as of yet (still can't get the image of his rude
character in Shakespeare in Love out of my mind) but he did make a great and
attractive Mr. Darcy. The A&E movie was fantastic, though it needed a little
editing.
I had to laugh at what I called the "obligatory Mr. Darcy bath scene" :) It was
nice.

I picked up Emma and Persuasion at an used bookstore a couple of months ago and
read them between phone calls at work. There is someone at work that doesn't
like to read much except the bible so she lived the books through me and my
descriptions of what happened in the stories... I still haven't read Sense and
Sensibility though I have listened to the Unabridged version on Books on Tape
while driving.

Actually, it was Hans Gruber, in Die Hard (the first one). My
favorite role of his to date, although he was pretty funny as the
sheriff in Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, too...

Hmm...I remember working a couple of Christmases at the theater when I
was in college. Actually, one of those days was the most fun I ever
had...no one showed up for one of the showtimes, so the manager took a
couple of us exploring. As it was a converted old theater...the kind
that was a real theater as well as a movie theater, it was kinda neat
going backstage (watching our step...the stage was full of rotten wood
by then), upstairs above the stage, under the stage and all the dressing
rooms (mostly storage too, by then). We even got a ladder out to see if
we could find the old fountain...it was right there, between the men's
room and the office on one side of the lobby...walled up with 2 *old*
vending machines with/on it...such a shame.
Of course, now they've remodeled it again...first from 1 to two screens
(when I was in middle school)..and now it's got 4...my sis says they're
larger than postage stamps, so I'm afraid to go in there to see what
they did. My guess is that they finally gutted the rest of the
building, shrank the two theaters and put two more back where the stage
was. There was some beautiful plasterwork in the original...which was
mostly just hidden by cloth-hung walls and a dropped roof originally...I
wonder if any of it is still in existance now.
Sigh...

Near the beginning of part three of P&P, while Elizabeth is
playing the piano with Georgia.......OH MY GOD!...that
LOOK he's giving her. I told my sister there would be quite
a few things I might give to have a man look at me like that
once in my life time. She replied... If one does, you won't
see it. hmmmm....

My husband did pretty well on that account this year as well. I got
Shakespeare in Love (collectors edition), Elizabeth, and Dangerous
Beauty on DVD. A sterling silver ivy cloak clasp from <plug> Dragonspawn

of the Uppity Women books (Ancient Times and Medieval Times) by Vicki

oh Yes.. that look.... I about died when Mr. Darcy gave Elizabeth that look of
gratitude when Miss Bingley made that thoughtless comment and Elizabeth went to
Georgiana to turn the pages of music.... P&P happens to be my all time favorite
Jane Austin... with Emma coming a close second... followed by Persuasion... I'm
still out on the other's...
