Good: I was lucky enough to be allowed to sing Amazing Grace with the Rogues
again, both days this weekend. It went ok -- not great by any means, but not
totally horrid, either. See below.
Bad: Apparently I have some sort of allergy that *only* appears in Ohio. I have
a great deal of difficulty believing that, but I've never had an allergy in my
life that I know of, but every weekend at GLMF I get varying degrees of
post-nasal drip (that icky thing in your throat that makes it hurt and get
halfway scratchy?). I hadn't really paid attention to it before, but this
weekend it was especially bad. It was also very warm and exceedingly humid, but
I don't know if that can have an effect on allergies or not. Saturday when I
went to sing I found I had a *very* tenuous grasp on my voice, and darn little
sound. This, naturally, was pretty disappointing to me, although I was still
approached by some audience members and complimented on the job I did. I
maintain that they couldn't hear a thing and merely thought that since I looked
pretty and was doing *something*, I must be singing well. ;) On Saturday night
I took some sudafed to try to dry up my nose, and it helped a bit, but didn't
really give myself time to repair all the damage from the previous day's
dripping, so Sunday's performance was *better* than Saturday's (which is NOT
saying a great deal!), but still only about 60% of what I know I could do
without this dripping or allergy or whatever the heck it was. I was dreadfully
disappointed about it, seeing as it was my last chance to sing with the Rogues
(and their last date at GLMF this year), but apparently it went better than I
thought it did, because *several* people sought me out and told me that they'd
been in the back of the crowd and could hear me, and thought I did a lovely
job. Hmph.
Ok, more good: I'm trying to view this maybe-an-allergy thing in a positive
light. As I told one of the Rogues, at least now if I do ever sing with them
again, they'll all be *amazed* at how much more sound and tone quality I have
without the allergy! Um, as long as it's not in Ohio. *snort*
So, to sum up a long story: I sang again, twice. Once was mediocre at best,
once was ok-to-good, but nowhere near great. Maybe next time, whenever that
might be. :)
Cheers to all! Oh, and if anyone knows about any weird allergens only in
Geneva, OH, drop me a line, ok? :)

Not so unbelievalbe: a few years ago (and a few more actually:)), my
wife & I move from western PA (not too far from Ohio) to the
coast.....Over night, we both developed allergies, and neither of us
had allergies before!

Well, we'll have to see about that... *grin* I've exchanged an email
with one of the Rogues this morning, and he said I was welcome to do
it 'anytime', and asking if I'd be in MD... so we shall see. But what
if my allergy comes back in MD?! I'm all paranoid now, lol. I'll have
to invest in some Drixoral or something, just in case. :)
Thanks also to everyone who posted about weird localized allergies --
I appreciate it! :)

You know..... I think mayhap you are just alergic to Ohio! My mother is from
Ohio, and every time I go visit relations there, I start to itch, so I think
it's an alergy either to the state itself, or mayhap an alergy to the people
there. I remember when my aunt came out on holliday, and I started to itch
again, so it's the people there.... i know it is!
It's all those black eye peas those people eat there.... that's it!
(this is a joke post, and no part should be taken as hatred towards people in
Ohio in any way..... after all, we have people in Arkansas we like to make fun
of as well)

I thought I was going to throw up or pass out. Of course, it didn't
help that I'd neglected to unlace my bodice. The second and third
times I was so annoyed about my allergies that I was more concerned
with making any sound at *all*... :) Maybe one of these times I'll
actually get to do it while healthy *and* not having a kitten -- what
a joy that would be! *grinning*

Glad you put that disclaimer in there ;+) I've lived here in northwest
Ohio, about 20 minutes south of the Medieval Fantasy Faire, for 44+ years
and have never eaten a black-eyed pea in my life! Allergies, though, are
another matter. You'd be hard-pressed to find someone not taking Claritin,
Zyrtec, Allegra, or any other of the OTC antihistamines. I just look on
them as our potential natural disaster- California has earthquakes, we have
pollen.

I could never get any of the comercial antihistamines to work.....
HOWEVER!
What I have had work, is a remedy that was actually suggested to me by an
old Gypsy lady (it's funny.... an old Gypsy lady will give a person medical
advice, and we'll take it, but we see a sign that says "wet paint" and we have
to touch to be sure)
What she said to do is to take a half teaspoon of baking soda (more or less
per person.... I use a pinch personally) and put it in a glass of water.
Drink that water, and the alergies STOP completly in about 30 seconds!
I was AMAZED!
This same thing works for migraines, and I found out years later from an
actual doctor that the reason it works for migraines is because MOST migraines
are due to an alergic reaction. Some people have runny noses, some people get
migraines instead.....
So if any of you out there ever see a man wearing a Royal Stewart kilt, and
drinking baking soda in water, while touching wet paint, just remember.... an
old Gypsy lady probly told him to do it....
Well, all I can say is that it certainly took me by surprise! I'd half
convinced myself it was nothing but a never-before-experienced form
of performance anxiety... But normally I just get jittery, not
allergic! lol.

*grin* Are you making this up?!? Because it sounds too good to be
true. However, I will try it this weekend anyhow. I'm wiling to try
almost anything once.

Nope.... Though I tend to make up a lot of things (especially when speaking
to my boss, as he expects it) I don't make up stuff that's "medical".
It seems to work for me, and the worst part is, I have NO idea WHY it works!
But then... who was it that said the best way to make a miracle dissappear,
is to question it?
Anyway.... it seems to work for me.... I can't get Jana to try it though....
How often do you take this baking soda and water, for max
effectiveness...? Does it matter? As often as symptoms occur?
*intrigued and willing to try it*

Pretty much....
I take it, the symtoms go away, and they don't usally come back, so that's
all I usally take it.....

If your coming down for Ohio Faire, can I suggest, Advil Cold and Sinus. Or
Aleve Cold and Sinus. If you suffer from Migraines, please take these or a
migrain medicine. It gets bad here when it hasn't rained in a few weeks.
Which it's basically been spitting on us, then stopping, then spitting then
stopping.
So if yer not used to the humidity + allergens, take something! Or you'll
end up misreble! ESPEICALLY out near the faire grounds, where it's mostly
Farm fields.

With Texas RenFest coming up, I stock my medicine chest with Tavist,
and carry it with me every weekend. With dust, pines, dampness/molds,
etc., one needs all the help one can get. And don't forget they eyedrops
(blink, blink).
Back to lurking,
just another vendor :-)
I'll throw my support in for Tavist as well... I have tried God knows
how many Rx and OTC allergy meds, and the one and only thing that works
without making me sleepy is Tavist D. I couldn't get through GLMF
without this stuff!
