Howdy -

Just a last minute reminder that auditions for actor-types for the 25th
anniversary season of the Maryland Renaissance Festival will be on this
coming Saturday, June 9th. Auditions are by appointment only. Call
1-800-296-7304.

Auditions are for: General Company (adult actors 18+)
Young Actors Ensemble: (acting training program for serious acting students
16 - 18)
The Guild of St. George (our living history guild for adults 18+)
The Company of St. Genesius (our adult acting training program for those
over 18)

Visit our website at www.rennfest.com for more detailed info on these
various programs.

Tell your (talented) friends, family, & loved ones who have expressed
interest in auditioning to get off the couch, stop their whining and do it!
We need a few good men and women to round out our company. This year I am
especially interested in those with stage combat experience &
improvisational experience.

Thanks,
Carolyn

As a follow up to the questions asked by Rach and attempted answers
from Peg, I will try to explain from my past two seasons of experience
especially from the Guild and Apprenticeship program for adults.

Rach,

Definitly go and audition. It is great experience. When you go to
the auditions, they usually have a list of major roles not casted,
that you sort of audition for. Although, you sort of audition and
they assign you a role to play. If you audition for the Guild or the
Adult Apprenticeship program, it is nice to have a memorized
monologue, but they only require you to recite a monologue. It gives
them an idea if you can master the language. The next thing they
usually have you do, is a short improvisation.

If they decide to cast you in General Cast, you are assigned a role.
If you are in Court you have to research your character to get some
historical background. But you still have to flesh out your character
like everyone else does during the rehearsal process. If you are
casted as a middle class or a peasant class character they give you a
start of a basic idea, but the rest is totally up to you. Of coarse
as Peg does state there are some guidelines. And as a member of cast
we all have a guide that helps us to create our characters. We also
get help during the rehearsal process from fellow actors.

The Guild is a living history group at MDRF. It portrays the daily
life of a Knight's household. In particular, the household is
Hengrave hall. It is owned by Sir Thomas Kytson and Lady Kytson.
They are very wealthy making their profits on the wool trade. In the
Guild, you are assigned a name and a position in the household and you
they help you to create a character a long with everyone else. Their
focus is in living history but they still go through out the festival
site and act in the streets too. But they also do demonstrations and
they educate the masses of what it really is like to live during the
time period.

The Adult Apprenticeship program is set up much like the General Cast,
except the focus is to instruct you in acting, much like the Young
Actors Ensamble. After three years and they usually evaluate your
progress and then it is possible to be part of General Cast. This will
be my third year with the program.

You learn a lot no matter which part of the festival cast you are
with. It is a lot of hard work, but to see smiles on peoples faces is
very heartwarming and is a reward onto itself. With the Guild and the
Apprenticeship program you can choose a partial run or full run.
Don't quote me on the exact nature of anything in this post. The best
thing to do is check out the website and click entertainment and check
it out. Or you could call the office to get a better idea of what
everything is about. I hope this has been helpful.

Break a leg during rehearsals.

John, I hate to say it... You've gotta be reading via Google. The post from
Rach was back in 99...

Cyd,

Thanks. I did not notice the dates. Ever since they switched to
Google, I have been having problems with the reading the newsgroup. I
saw the recent post from Carolyn and thought it was brought about from
Rach's post. My mistake.
