ESPN fired Marly Rivera on Wednesday after allegedly calling another
reporter a "f----g c---t."
The New York Post's Andrew Marchand said there was video of Rivera's
verbal tirade when reporting the story. TMZ released the footage Thursday.
Rivera and Ivón Gaete are both attempting to speak to Aaron Judge, who was
signing autographs and posing for photos with young fans on the Yankee
Stadium field. After berating Gaete in Spanish and English, Rivera hurled
the obscene remark in earshot of Judge and others.
A stunned Gaete turned around to confirm the video operator right behind
them caught the incident.
The exchange took place before April 18's game between the Yankees and Los
Angeles Angels. Marchand said Gaete, a freelance journalist, was there
covering Shohei Ohtani for Tokyo Broadcasting.
The video appears to corroborate Marchand's report that Rivera thought
Gaete was infringing on her time to speak with the reigning AL MVP.
However, it didn't seem like Judge wanted to talk to any media while
interacting with fans. After Rivera left, Judge politely told Gaete he was
about to head back to the clubhouse and promised to speak with her another
time.
Rivera had covered MLB at ESPN for 13 years.
"I fully accept responsibility for what I said, which I should not have,”
Rivera told Marchand. "There were extenuating circumstances but that in no
way is an excuse for my actions."
Rivera also claimed she was being "singled out" because of past
professional disagreements with John Blundell, Gaete's husband and MLB's
Vice President of Communications.
