This is, I suppose, taken from the anime film (whose English title is given
as "Night On the Galactic Railroad") which in turn was based on a story by
Kenzi Miyazawa, a famous Japanese writer early in the 20th century. The film
(all of whose background text and whose chapter breaks are also in
Esperanto) is available in the US on DVD (I got a copy several months ago).
The original story is also available in Esperanto, translated by Konisi
Gaku, in the book _Nokto de la Galaksia Fervojo_, published in 1994 by the
Japana Esperanta Librokooperativo. (The book also contains four other
stories by Miyazawa.)

First para.:

"'Cxu vi scias do, knaboj, kio fakte estas tiu nebula blankajxo, kiun oni
nomis jen rivero jen spuro de fluinta lakto?' La instruisto lancxis la
demandon al siaj lernantoj dum li fongromontris al granda nigra stelmapo
pendigita sur la nigra tabulo. Tie, de supre malsupren, fluis nebula
blankajxo simila al la zono galaksia."

Thanks Don for the reply. I've tried to locate a copy of the DVD but can
only find Japenese versions. From where did you buy yours?

I've incorporated the new words and interpreted the word order a bit for
some of the track names. Would you say I'm near the mark with these new
translations?

Sounds good; there was a red-headed jazz singer called Bricktop.

Hi Arnold,

Thanks for your reply and help.

Maybe you can translate the following also? It's written on the CD cover.

Nu do, karaj, cu vi scias, kio fakte estas tiu nebula blankajo, kiun oni
nomis jen rivero jen postesigno de fluinta lakto?

Now then, expensive, ?? ?? ??, that indeed is yonder misty ??, which one
call here ?? ?? ?? of ?? milk?

"kara" means "dear" or "darling" and is used only metaphorically (as in
English) and rarely for "expensive" (which is, more commonly,
"malmultekosta")
"c^u" - a word used to introduce a yes/no question; here equivalent to the
English particles "do" or "does"
"vi" = you
"sci'" = know, be aware of
"kio" = what (thing)
"blank'" = white
"-aj^-" = suffix indicating a tangible item or object characterized by the
root to which it is attached
"-is" - past tense, already happened
"jen" - a pointing word, like the French "voici" or "voila"; in this case
"jen ... jen" = "on this occasion (pointing) ... on that occasion (pointing
elsewhere)"
"river'" = river
"post" = after
"sign'" = sign
"flu'" = flow
"-int-" - suffix used to create past active participle; translate roughly
"which has already done (whatever is in the root)"

This is the first line from the story; see Konisi's translation which I
posted in my earlier message (and which is slightly different, but means the
same): 'Cxu vi scias do, knaboj, kio fakte estas tiu nebula blankajxo, kiun
oni nomis jen rivero jen spuro de fluinta lakto?'

(The references at the end are apparently to the trail of light across the
night sky which is known in large parts of Asia as "the Silver River" and in
much of the West as "the Milky Way"; i.e., this particular galaxy.)

I thought it sounded familiar! I should have looked at your previous reply
again.

Doesn't malmultekosta mean not expensive? I think the post following your
reply talks about this but I don't understand it all.

Thanks for the link. Now I know what the word "firsto" means, and the
Esperanto explaination makes a lot more sense than the literal English
translation. The coping of the mountain??

Barnaby,

The following are my suggested corrections. More learned Esperantists than
me may have other suggestions.

> La c\^eftitolo
> The ??

Main Title

>
> Temo el la Mondo de la Fantazia Kvara Dimensio
> Theme from the World of the Fantastic Fourth Dimension
>
> Fantazio kaj Realo
> Fantasy and Realism??

Fantasy and Reality

>
> En Tago Serena
> A Day Serene

In a Serene Day

>
> La Kanto de la Rondiro de la Steloj
> The song of the ?? of the ??

Rondiro appears to be a combination of the roots "rond" and "ir." The usual
rule requires that the second root is the more important. "rond" means
"round, circle" and "ir" means "go" thus "rondiro" translates "the going
around" or "Therefore, the closest meaning would likely be "orbit."
Therefore, the title means "The Song of the Orbit of the Stars."

>
> Fantazio de Giovanni
> Fantasy of Giovanni
>

The Star Festival of Centaurus

>
> La Masto de "Tenkirin"
> The Mast of "Tenkirin"
>

> The joy
>
> La Nordo Kruco
> The North Cross

Probably was "La Norda Kruco" in which case the meaning would be "The
Northern Cross."

>
> La Pliocena Marbordo
> The ?? Coast
>

The Pleistocene Seacoast.

> La Historio Fantazio
> The History Fantastic

Esperanto does not normally permit two nouns to be put together that way.
Therefore, either it had to be La Historia Fantazio (The Historical Fantasy)
or La Historio Fantazia (The Fantastic History.)

>
> La Harpo de la Paradizo
> The harp of the paradise

The Harp of Paradise.

>
> La Travida Malg\^ojo de Giovanni
> The ?? Sadness of Giovanni

Travidi means "to see through." However, transparent is usually rendered by
"travidebla." Literal translation would seem to be "The see-through
Unhappiness of Giovanni" but more likely was meant to be "The Transparent
Unhappiness of Giovanni."
