Hi-
I have been interested in explosives for 5 years now, and have been
reading this newsgroup for about 2. I am looking for a book which lists out
all (or most) of the known explosive compounds, and gives a little
information on them (their formula, vDet, burn temp, etc.).

What would be a good title for me to buy?

Thanks for your time and information!

I think I'll try to find this one in the library...... $638 is a bit much,
but I can understand why it's so much (10 books....).

I have flipped through one of these volumes a while back....I only wish I
could remember where I saw it.

Thanks for the quick reply!

Tapper,

Information is not a crime. The abuse of that information is. Some of the
regular posters here know how to reduce a city to rubble, but just because
they know how doesn't make them criminals. It is only when they use their
knowledge for sinister purposes that they become criminals.I admit that the
current tenor of societal belief would have us all hidden under the jails it
still is not a crime to know things.

"The Chemistry of powder and Explosives" by Tenny Davis, it is worth the
$ 20 i spent on it. And offeres information such as formula, VDET, and a
little burn temp. for various explosives substances. Is is worth? you
ask. Yes, i respond. I posted the whole contents to this newsgroup a
while ago if you want to know what they are you can look through past
threads freely at http://www.deja.com/group/alt.engr.explosives and
perform a few searches.

They can, and do, carry books on explosives. Of course, my library is
apublic research library, if that makes a difference.

us military FM's 5-250 is the newest manual for explosives. Or you can get the
engineers handbook. But your best bet is to hook up with an engineer. He has
the access and most of the books are not restricted. Paladin Press is an
excellent source also, and at a reasonable price. All depends on how much you
want to find out.
Good luck.

The bible of explosives is Encyclopedia of Explosives & Related Items by Basil
Federoff & Oliver Sheffield Picatinny Arsenal: Dover. It is a multi volume
set.
Unfortunately is probably out of print - though I hear it is available on CD
for couple hundred dollars. Some local colleges in NJ used to have some
volumes of it around probably gift from Picatinny. Most have been pulled from
shelves (too politically
incorrect). A good spot to check is a local
university, particularly one with a strong
science (chemistry/physics) orientation
Many books there will have some info on
explosives.

Other than Fedoroff, there is Bebie's "Explosives, Military Pyrotechnics, and
Chemical Warfare Agrents." It's not nearly as comprehensive, but does cover a
lot of compounds in a single volume with basic information on each item.

Urbanski can be picked up from the ISEE in CD-ROM format. They use to sell the text and may still
have a few left. The price for members is $495.00 and non-members $615.00.

Boomer,

I looked at my typical sources and have been having trouble finding a
copy. What I am looking for falls into a few categories,
1. References for decontamination techniques for explosive contaminated
equipment and buildings (particualr interest in published chemical
decon techniques).
2. Chemical properties of energetic compounds relating to decomposition
(most interested in publications from trusted publishers, i.e., no how
to cookbooks) especially thermal stability, and deflagration
temperatures
3. Commercial manufacture of explosives (especially mailitary) and
historical perspectives. I am looking for both general overviews of the
development and use of explosives, and more detailed techniques.

My interest is in identifying potential contaminants and hazards
associated with the production of particular compounds.

The best source I know of is PATR. I have never seen a copy of Urbanski. You could go to your local
library and request a loan on the text from a major university library. I have done this often. I
put out a request search for this text for you. It would be a used copy.

Cat. # I will be hard to find. I will check with a few sources like the IABTI & WEODF

Cat# 2 There are a number of texts with this info that I have found for the ISEE. Check their
website for the books

LLNL Explosive Handbook
Perf. Para of Cond. High Expl.
LASL Explosive Property Data
Forensic Invest. of Explosives
Explosive ID Guide
Modern Methods and Applic. in Analysis. of Expl.

Cat # 3 ? other than PATR

Zukas new text Explosive Effects and Applications has a rather nice table on a environmental
properties, e.g. TLV,TWA, LD50, Vapor Pressure, Chronic and / or Cautions, Temp of Explosion.

The CRC Press also has a text on toxicity, but I don't think it is in print any more, but I have a
copy ;
Toxicity and Metabolism of Explosives, by J.Yino. It only covers only the major 15 military
explosives, e.g. PETN, TNT, HMX, RDX etc..

Don,

Thanks. I will look for these over the next few months. I have
considered Marshall in the past but it is typically pretty expensive.
Any suggestions for references on my previous requests on
