How do grenade fuses work, like the ones where you "pull the pin and throw"?
is there a way to make a fuse similar to that? Thanks in advance for your
help!

I'm not a grenade fuze expert, but whence you pull the pin, the pin
being held back by springs is released and hits a primer that in turn
ignites a fuze that burns down to the primary explosive, and the
primary explosive initiates the booster below it (Tetryl, PETN, etc.)
that explodes the grenade filler. And sends the deadly shrapnel along
with the powerful explosion.

yeah.. but not like with ordinary simple accessable materials, unless

Grenades have a spring-loaded hammer that is held in place by the handle of the
grenade. The pin holds the handle in place and when you pull the pin out you
can hold the handle for as long as you want with out danger of the grenade
detonating. But if you let the handle move up a centimeter or so, the hammer
will slip by and will hit the primer, which will ignite a very slow burning,
low gas producing powder that burns down to the primary which detonates the
Comp. B (American Grenades) If you want to make your own fuzes you can buy a
used practice grenade fuze drill out the old primer, enlarge the hole to use
shot gun shell primers super glue a primer in and add a time delayed blasting
cap. The only problem is finding a delay comp. that doesn't produce a lot of
gasses or find a way to vent the gasses. If the delay produces a lot of gasses
it will cause the metal cap to expand and create a cavity for the gasses to
flow down and will ignite the primary.

The fuse issue is extremely critical, here, as the fuse is
confined in the grenade body. A fuse is most likely to be
unreliable, in this context, by burning too fast. That has
obvious implications to safety.

There are other issues which must be addressed, in addition to
the burning rate of the fuse, itself. The primer generates a
certain amount of gas. If the fuse assembly does not manage to
seal the gap between the primer and the initiator, you stand a
good chance of detonating the grenade as soon as you release the
spoon. This is not conducive to longevity.

An extensive testing program would be indicated, to establish an
extreme degree of reliability, before I would want to pull the
pin on one of these. I'm thinking about hundreds to thousands
of successful and reliably timed fuses before you release these
things for human testing.

Do you have time delayed blasting caps that would allow you time to throw
the grenade?
The longest delay I've heard about is a half second.

standard us fuses are 3-5 seconds, not 1/2 second. the primer
appears to be a standard pistol type, and the time delay channel
is not a straight line. the igniter seems to be an ignition
primed blasting cap. playing with grenades is not recommended,
lots of little bitty bits of hot steel can ruin your day.

German 'stick' grenades (as seen in WWII movies) had a friction device for
lighting the delay fuze as far as I know.
When you pulled the string, (a good quick pull was good I guess) it rubbed
the friction igniter against a rough surface and ignited it.

Not the " pull the pin" type of granade you are asking about but I guess
the delay fuze was similarish.

I thank every one of you that has contributed to my knowledge of these
wonderful devices. I am already thinking up a way to make a pseudo-fuse
that acts similar to, but not exactly to a regular grenade fuse. If any of
you want to "proofread" my blueprints for this grenade, email me at
GFre...@Antionline.com. This is not my primary email address, so I won't
be checking it every day, but I will check it often, and I will upload the
.bmp file of my blueprints.

My next question is on how a "FlashBang" grenade works; like the ones used
by certain organizations to blind/deafen or at least shock the target(s) and
allow quick and easy entry and completion of the task at hand, be it
counter-terrorism or a drug bust, etc... I know that magnesium and
aluminum both make spectacularly bright flashes, but magnesium also burns
very hot, and I was wondering if these types of grenades used this type of
filler. and again, thank you in advance :)

This is a much simpler type to make. The design is basically
built from a commercial pull string fuse igniter, a length of
safety fuse, and a bomb. Several nations used stick grenades for
this reason.

There were a bunch of improvised designs used during WW-I.
Somewhat typical was the "hairbrush bomb, which had all the
components externally mounted into a wooden paddle looking
superficially like a hairbrush.

A serious problem with these expedient designs, is that safety
fuse is designed to be used in long lengths, say a couple of
feet, and short lengths are of questionable reliability. One
expedient around this was to use a longer fuse with a notch cut
in the fuse. You ignite the fuse and wait for flame to spurt
from the notch before throwing the bomb. Of course, if the
notch is not deep enough, or you miss the spurt, your buddies
have to clean you off the trench wall. :-( <shrug>

Don't know about the german ones but I do know about the Chinese ones.There
were more than one type of course but the issue ones were about 9 in
long.They consisted of a cast steel body with the explosive component, a
wooden handle with an end cap, and the end cap was taped to the friction
element.The friction element was similar to the standard pull wire igniter
in use today on fuse-cap initiators.The delay element was of varied length
time fuse crimped to a #8 blasting cap.The average delay on these grenades
was 6 sec. There was a variation on this which had a 1 sec delay for use in
booby trap devices.

I've heard somewhere that a Flashbang grenade is made of a small charge with
TNT surronded with a layer of aluminum to give the flash, but i'm not sure at
all (that's what i heard somewhere).

Flash-bang grenades (aka, stun grenades) from what i've heard use 9
grams of pyrotechnic flash powder composition (not sure exactly which
one, but i'd imagine that it would certainly contain magnesium for most
brilliance luminisity output) in a aluminum casing.

They are thrown not too far from the criminal or suspect and disable
somebody for about 3 seconds completley, after about at least 5 seconds
the affected person would have been well aware of what happend.

The flashbang fuze is probably similar to a ordinary grenade fuze, but
the length time of which these fuzes burn is very short -1.5 second burn
time of the fuze of a flash-bang, it is generally no longer than that.
The reason the fuze is so short is so that the flash-bang grenade can
not be thrown back, after being thrown e.g. by the SWAT team.

These stun grenades are designed to temporarily blind and deafen
hostiles into submission. And it is also not unusual for such a device
to start a fire (Magnesium itself burns at 2,000 deg. C, with the
additional pyrotechnic oxidizing agent, over 2,000 deg. C in the
explosion) so a fire starting from one of these thrown around
materials that are capable of catching fire would be no surprise.

F/B devices are designed to distract not subdue.

Um. No.

F/B devices are extremely useful to distract under some
tactical conditions, and their employment for that is
generally encouraged when appropriate as it's a safe
and useful secondary application for existing equipment
in people's kit.

F/B devices are specc'ed and designed to temporarily
incapacitate via sensory overload subjects in near
physical proximity to their detonation. This is a
very real, intentional effect. I haven't gone through
the demonstration personally, but I've seen videotapes
of police and military spec ops people doing shoot-the-screen
combat reactions testing before and after flashbangs were
fired in their immediate vicintity. Often they don't even
realize there's a threat for several seconds, and both reaction
time and accuracy of fire are significantly degraded at
five seconds and affected at ten seconds. Those are fulltime
professionals reacting mind you, not average perps. The light
intensity and sound intensity needed to get this effect
for a reasonably sized room and/or distance from the
grenade for subjects relatively in the open are intentional
design goals for the devices.

warriors either. ;-) If the subjects of the tapes were selected for their
combat capabilities, (recon marines, army rangers, air force PJs) then their

But the reactions have a bimodal distribution. Most subjects are
substantially debilitated by facial exposure. But a few just get motivated,
physically prop one eye open, and perform at extremely high levels. YMMV.

Physiological studies indicate that the capability reduction is
the major component; it's not very much a mental effect.

The video in question was using police SWAT officers and military Spec Ops
personel, not normal patrol police officers... i.e., the people who would
be carrying F/B devices as normal load and are expected to be trained
to use them, and lethal force, as needed.

I have seen a similar tape which used "normal" cops as the subjects;
they were functionally incapacitated a bit longer, but the recovery
curve looked pretty similar to those of "warriors" as you put it.
Of course, the "warriors" have better reactions and at any given
point in the demonstration are more effective than a "normal"
subject will be, but they were still functionally out of it
for several seconds and had significantly slower reactions and
less accurate fire out to ten seconds or so.

Completely different issue. Pepper spray works primarily by
psychological effect; the eye closing reflex and some physiological
pain reactions are significant, but mostly people want to fall down
and stop hurting when it hurts that bad, so they do. As a result,
the people who are pissed off and/or have high pain tolerance and/or
are highly motivated and can function despite the pain will continue
to function, degraded somewhat from the physiological effects.
"extremely high levels" of physical effort due to the pain motivation
perhaps, but coordination and complex activities such as aiming
and firing a weapon are significantly degraded. They're still dangerous
hand to hand or with a knife, and dangerous in the sense that anyone
with a gun is dangerous, even if they can't aim it well at short
range it's still dangerous.

The knockback of brain function due to sensory overload in
a F/B device is mostly physiological, not psychological.
The effects will last longer in less well trained and less
motivated people, true. But the fact that even keyed up
special forces people who know it's coming are out of it
for several seconds and significantly degraded for several
more after one indicates that it's not a mostly psychological
impact like with O/C weapons.

The current politically correct term for flash-bangs is "Noise-Light
Distraction Device", which pretty well describes their intended
function. I've had several of these go off anywhere from 30 feet to 5
feet away from me, and I can attest to their effectiveness. The
overpressure is a very tactile thump in the chest, and the flash is
enough to leave you with an afterimage for several minutes; even with
eyes closed. No, they don't leave you gibbering helplessly on the
floor afterwards; but they do gain valuable seconds for the thrower.

NLDD's are only effective when used in conjunction with a dynamic
assault. They buy you a few seconds of disorientation and confusion to
get a team in a door. Combined with a good team who can maximize
speed, shock and surprise, they make an effective tool.

Most manufacturers of NLDD's have designed them so that there is
minimal flame expulsion; however, they reccommend that anyone using
one is trained on their use- Don't use them if there are young, ill,
or elderly present, flammable atmospheres, etc.; where and how to
place them effectively, that sort of thing. Unfortunately, some
departments tend to say "Hey, these things are neat" and purchase them
without training the SWAT guys on their safe and effective use.

you could use a spring and a peice of wood with a hole in it for a pin when

lights the fuse which in turn burns down and detonates the blasting cap
which
in turn sets of the EX and sends shrapnel all over the place !!!!

Some of these are simply a very loud whistle. They have
an inner and outer shell, the outer shell is to insulate
the hot inner shell from catching things on fire.
The inner shell has a slow deflagerating charge that produces
a lot of gas, the gas is expelled through essentially,
a whistle device. Loud as hell, some will give you 140 decibels.
There are any number of proprietary designs around.
They can be hard to get, LEO only devices.

Correct. I think we all know here what 9 grams of flash is capable of
doing.

True, inexperienced or stubborn people is what can cause such a drastic
result. That is why training is required in order to understand the use

This would only happen if i did something very wrong towards, or broke
the law, which is very unlikely, or if some adolescents obtained such a

Only partially true, such a device was not meant for the purpose of
being a grenade of killing, such as fragmentation and blast grenades.
If the grenade is thrown in the proximity of your head or if you are
rather sensitive to loud noises, then will you suffer heavily, or
possibly die.

Yes, i think everyone here knows the purpose of a flash grenade, my
meaning was simply: to subdue them into an agreement (because their body
cannot control or handle such a violent shock or outburst of energy) to
surrender temporarily, yes it can be considered a distraction.

Has anyone ever heard of the "liquid bullet"? it is supposed to be a
good self-defense weapon against multiple parties/attackers, that works
from 20 or 40 feet away to send some sort of signal or beams of some
sort that make the attackers feel like their skin is on fire and cause
severe nausea...

I beleive ULF (ultra low frequency) sound devices also produce the same
effect.

Well .... looking in my copy of Jane's "Security and CO-IN Equipment" 1990-91
there is certainly a large selection of these devices!!

The Haley and Weller (UK) E180/182 Stun hand grenade.

"busting with a loud report (187 dB) and brilliant flash (22 million candela for
10 milliseconds) which have a disorienting effect when used at close quarters
or in a confined space."

The E182 "has four submunitions contained inside.... [each] producing 177 dB and
6 - 7 million candelas."

most doors."
