As far as what I've seen, the amount of "light" being put off by the
majority of the explosions I've seen are very consistent with military
explosives.
Realize, "bunker busters" have incindiary properties. Also, you can never
have an explosion without having heat as one of the byproducts. In fact,
the MOAB is basically a feul bomb. Note, I have neither seen, nor heard of
any evidence that a MOAB has been used in Iraq.

I think this might be the case, a cruise missile is equipped with a jet
enging and will most likely have fuel left when it hits the target...

Well yes, but that is not the purpose. "Bunkers" are usually filled with one of the Eglin
HERD ( High Explosives Research and Development), explosives, usually Tritonal pellets.
The purpose of the Al is to add to the heat energy equation ( increase relative energy)
and increase heat and gas expansion, thus improving on the "Blast Effect" . The same
thing is used in the mining industry, AN with Al. The addition of Al can increase eR more
than 25 %

It is true that the pictures we had about the bombing were estonishing in the
fact there was a lot of golden effect (like Iron or C in pyro compositions) and
then bright flash like Al powder and again orange!
It really looked like a pyro show of fireworks; explosions didn't seem very
noisy :-?

What exactly do you mean by a fuel bomb? Are you suggesting that the MOAB

In terms of light emission, an isolated explosion may well produce only a
small amount of visible light, especially during the daytime. If you have
an explosive device inside a structure then you will get enormous amounts of
particulate material thrown out with the blast. I would assume that much of
this contributes to the emission of light at the temperatures seen in the
immediate vicinity of the explosion. You've also got the components of the
delivery device to worry about, with a fair amount of nice oxidisable metal
and, potentially, residual fuel. Given that most of the footage we've seen
was shot at night, with camera equipment that is being used to shoot a
primarily dark scene, I'm not surprised that the flashes appear to be very
bright and intense.
As for the sound, that will depend entirely upon the position of the
observer relative to the explosion, surrounding features, etc. Listening
to the explosion via a microphone some distance away with other explosions
going off at pretty much the same time doesn't help either.

Off the top of my old gray beezer I don't know what explosive, or explosive
mixture, the MOAB uses for sure but here are some observations that I have
made.
1. The video replay of the detonation suggests that the filler is dispersed
just prior to explosively functioning.
2. The series of still photos of the Eglin test
( http://www.globalsecurity.org/military/systems/munitions/moab.htm )
do not unequivocally show the full sequence very well. However the stills
suggest the fireball "filling in" the explosive cloud, which is quite
extensive in area covered but which doesn't expand spherically until it
covers a large ground surface.
3. The color of the fireball suggest some other explosive than the gelled
Al/NH4NO3, the fireball being more orange-yellow and subdued than the bright
yellow-white of BLU-82 bombs I have observed.
4. "News" reports that suggest the MOAB is of a thermobaric design. The
"explanation" given by one reporter was that the bomb was sequenced rather
than single source detonated. And another suggested some sort of powdered
explosive.
Now. What explosive, in powder form, will reliably detonate particle to
particle when dispersed so that the pressure pulse is time extended?
Tritonal? But what explains the subdued light output and darker colored
fireball observed? And the light gray smoke cloud?
Hmmm. More questions than answers on this new device.

Anyone see the Equinox documentary on explosives, broadcast on Channel 4 in
the UK several years ago? There was a very nice example of this on that
program.
They had a demonstration explosion using maybe 2000 pounds of ANFO in a
truck, in a desert area in the US. Filmed via a mirror system, slow-motion
replay clearly showed the compression front moving through the air followed
by the fire ball, before the mirror was shattered by a rock.
I saw that.
Was amazed by the size of the fireball.

I guess I misused the term "feul bomb". As far as my knowlege of this, I
haven't studied it much yet. My information comes from a military person
that was interviewed on the news. I'm sure he over simplified what it does.
He explained that it spread "feul" over a wide area, then ignited it. I
know he was using layman's terms, so I appologize for that overzealous
incorporation of faulty information.

Yes, this is due to the Al. See Dirk's post, he is correct. Not all of the Al is consumed
during detonation and some is burnt off in the atmosphere often causing secondary
explosions. This is a well know fact and is also common in AN/AL detonations

Can't be, you can not get a thermobraic or FAE effect with something this big. Max size
for these is on the order of 2,000 lbs. These types of detonations are to hard to control
when producing a cloud of this size that would be created and almost always fail. Just
because the ball in not round and appears more flat, does not mean a sequence event,
although they usually are.

Tritonal is basically the combination of TNT and Aluminum.
But An + Al is simply called ammonal.
Other related aluminized explosives are the
hexal(hexogen(RDX)/aluminum),
Some HBX contains RDX in combination with TNT and aluminum .One old
example is Torpex which is simply an aluminized composition
(RDX/TNT/ALUMINUM).
Other ternary composition is the
HTA(HMX/TNT/Aluminum),PAX-3(HMX/Aluminum/BDNPA/F)
Classifying Tritonal as a high blast explosive is reasonable as the
presence of aluminum in an explosive composition enhances its blast
effects.Therefore they perform similarly with other multi-component
high blast explosives like H-6 which (replaces torpex) and was
stabilized with wax(RDX/TNT/Al/wax/calcium chloride) .
Meanwhile the minols are basically aluminized amatols and the DBX(or
BBX) are similar to minols but it can contain RDX .

This is what I know by some researching. Note that I do not claim this
information is correct, it's only what I've heard and what I've been
taught while I was serving in the army (not the US army).
Generally, missiles use high-order explosives like TNT and C-4. The
detonator device on this has a chemical delayer to make sure that the
missile explodes *inside* the building it was targetet to, not on the
wall. Today's AGMs (AGM = Air-to-Ground Missile) use C-4 and have
blast-fragmentation warhead. By now I haven't heard of explosive that
can produce those fireworks you see on CNN. The flames and sparks you
see come from the target's gas supply explode when being exposed to
the shock wave and the missile's propeller being fired by the
explosion. Missiles use hard oxidizer in their engines. When the
oxidizer is exposed to the shock wave it heats up. The oxidizer itself
cannot explode, neither can the fuel. However, when the ozidizer and
fuel are heated the speed of reaction between them is increased about
20 times. The hull of the missile is designed to sustain the pressure
produced during normal propulsion, not the highly energetic, almost
instant reaction between the oxidizer and the fuel. That's why the
engine (or at least the remainder from the cruise) explodes.
To make myself clear I'll give you an example of an oxidizer-fuel
combination. You can try this one yourself, but be careful if you need
your eybrows. Take a bottle of peroxide (sold in pharmacies as a
desinfectant, also used by artificial blondes) and heat it up to 80
Centigrade. Get a pile of about 100 gr. alluminium powder (you can
scratch it off a curtain trail). Put the powder in a container to
prevent it from splattering and pour the fuming peroxide on it.
depending on the purity of your alluminium it will either explode,
burst into flames or just start to fume. A simillar reaction is used
in missiles. In the above example neither the alluminium, nor the
peroxide can explode, but when the temperature of any of the compounds
is increased the speed of reaction is increased too.
The thing with the flames is a good point by the way. I was surprised
when I first had a training mission where real ammo was used. The
targets for RPGs were tank hulls, of course without he engine, fuel or
whatever. With the first shot our sergeant made a direct hit, but
instead of the explosion I expected the only thing that happened was
that the hull flew into pieces. This is because there wasn't any fuel
to explode inside.
And a final note about the ammo used by the coalition - though the US
military will never admit it, they use additional substances in their
missiles like sulfur that evaporate and contaminate the area. Also I
think there is sodium included, so when the firemen start pouring
water over the flames they move into a very interesting world. Cruise
missiles have a uranium stick along the core to increase the
penetrating capability of the projectile. Another wacky detail is the
use of chemical delayers in bombs. The delayers are set up to detonate
the device after 48 hours or something. This way a bomb can fall
through the roof, break the floors all the way to the basement and
explode there two days later. The chemical delayers are used because
they do not tick - thus they won't take the pains to disarm it.
The german seem more like an AMATONAL (Amatol + Al powder) while the american one looks also
like an AMATONAL (but more tritonal + AN)!
