I have another question. I would like to know the meaning of the expression "he was being benched" in the following sentence.

Three days later, Hayes told Kyle ***he was being benched*** because of the last will he had published in the senior prom committee’s “Memory Book.”

I wonder if the progressive form is used to mean a future event and the phrase means something like "he was going to be benched." Otherwise, I would be very glad if you could show me a suitable paraphrase for the expression "he was being benched."

Three days later, Hayes told Kyle the cause of his being benched was ...
There is no indication whether the punishment has begun or will begin.

Everyday American English adopted this expression from American football
jargon -- so its practical use is governed more by football speech style and
jargon than by orthodox grammatical parsing, or other analytic procedures.

Here "benched" = suspended, withdrawn, deactivated etc. That is all.

I would not say "football", but I'm not sure which sport originated
the phrase. Players of football, baseball, basketball, and hockey are
benched. The phrase describes what can happen in any sport in which
substitutions are made during the play of the game. It could also
describe not playing a player in a future game, but it is used less
that way.
