Civil Rights Leader: Dan Rather Slurred Blacks with Chandra Comments

By Carl Limbacher Jr.

Monday, July 23, 2001

A prominent California civil rights leader said this
weekend that "CBS Evening News" anchorman Dan Rather used
racially offensive language in an interview last Thursday
with nationally syndicated radio host Don Imus. The
leader demanded that Rather apologize or be sacked.

Rather made the racial slur while explaining why CBS News
brass finally caved in to mounting pressure over his
decision to ignore the Chandra Levy-Gary Condit story.

Rather told Imus on-air:

"What happened was they[CBS management] got the willies,
they got the Buckwheats. Their knees wobbled and we gave
it up."

Rev. Jesse Lee Peterson, head of the Los Angeles-based
Brotherhood Organization of a New Destiny (BOND), told
NewsMax.com that Rather's reference to "Buckwheat" -- the
easily-frightened black character in the 1930's "Little
Rascals" comedies -- is demeaning to African-Americans.

"Whenever you think of Buckwheat you think of black
people," Rev. Peterson said, adding the comment has been
cited as that used by racists and others to describe a
frightened Black man.

"You think of the 'Little Rascals' and the character
Buckwheat. You think of 'Amos and Andy' where they played
roles like that. The Buckwheat image has been used
against black people for decades."

"Had a white conservative said that, or someone from Fox
News Channel said that, there would be an outcry today
from the black community," the civil rights leader
predicted, "because that is a derrogatory term which
mostly applies to black Americans."

Repeated calls to the Baltimore headquarters of the
National Association for the Advancement of Colored
People and Rev. Jesse Jackson's Rainbow Push Coalition
office in Chicago, as well as Rev. Al Sharpton's National
Action Network in Harlem, were not returned. . . .

How stupid. "The Buckwheats" does not refer to Buckwheat---that term was used
before that cute little pinckinniny had that name.

Dear Friend,

It has been a month since the Presidential election, a contest which has
proved to be the closest, most bitter, fiercely-fought election in the
history of our country. One thing is clear – we are right now, as a
nation, the most divided that we have ever been.

Another thing should now be clear to us – politics is not enough to win the
fight – we must win the battle to change the hearts of the American people.

You see, in this election, based on exit poll data, approximately 90% of
black Americans voted for one candidate. That is a shocking percentage. No
other group of Americans votes with such a monolithic voice.

The reason blacks tend to vote as a block, is that racist demagogues like
Jesse Jackson scare them into thinking that rich, white people want to put
them back into slavery – and the average black person buys this line without
blinking.

The dirty little secret is, most blacks in this country do not think for
themselves. And the reason for that is simple, but no one wants to talk
about it. Certainly not politicians. By nature, politicians can only be so
truthful – otherwise they can’t seem to win enough votes to get elected.

The problem in the black community will not be fixed by politicians.

The real problem is the lack of fathers in the homes. This void is the
reason racist demagogues are able to come in to the community, get blacks
angry, and cause them to do what the demagogues want. Racial hatred from
blacks is personally destructive to blacks, and extremely dangerous for all
Americans. It is the issue that will not go away until we deal with it
squarely.

As many of you know, I am the Founder and President of B.O.N.D., the
Brotherhood Organization of A New Destiny. Our purpose is “Rebuilding the
Family By Rebuilding the Man”. We have been rebuilding families, one man at
a time, for ten years, long before it ever became fashionable to champion
the cause of men. When we started, our mission was to help the black man
overcome the debilitating effects of misplaced anger, blame, and
group-thought. However, as we grew, it became clear that all people,
regardless of race or gender, could benefit greatly from their association
with B.O.N.D., and so we opened the organization up to all people of
goodwill.

No organization in America is doing more to help mend our families, race rel
ations, and nation. I do not say this to boast – I say it because it is
true.

Through our services, meetings, workshops, individual and family counseling,
newsletter, website, public speaking, and programs (including our
residential Emancipation Program where young men aged 18-28 are guided into
manhood, learning to let go of anger, manage finances, find and hold jobs,
and start businesses), B.O.N.D. touches so many lives in a profound manner.
And we are bringing about real racial reconciliation, based not on phony
platitudes, but on truth, which is so overdue in our society.

You may have seen us recently on television programs like BET Tonight With
Tavis Smiley or The O'Reilly Factor, or you may have seen my new book, FROM
RAGE TO RESPONSIBILITY (Paragon House Publishers) in a bookstore or on the
internet. B.O.N.D.’s message of faith in God, not in government, is having
great effect – our email, letters, and phone calls are proof of that. The
respect and well wishes we are now receiving in conservative circles is
welcome too, and gratifying. But the truth is, it’s not enough. We on the
inside know that we are just scratching the surface of what we can achieve.

Dr. Martin Luther King had a dream. Well, I don’t have a dream, I have a
vision – of a B.O.N.D. chapter in every major city with Emancipation
Programs nationwide helping troubled boys become men. I have a vision that
we will have a nationwide television and radio show (as I write we are still
attempting to get our radio show back on the air). I have a vision of
traveling the country speaking in schools, prisons, and churches (this
vision is beginning to happen, with our “Up From Slavery” Evangelical
Ministry – for more information, contact the B.O.N.D. office).

But we have an immediate crisis to solve first -- our bills are far
exceeding our ability to pay them.

Several months ago, we made a big move – our old office space was badly
cramped. We had to move in order to grow. We did, and thank God, found a
building that meets our needs. It has room for our offices, as well as a
nice meeting room. But it isn’t cheap -- $4,400 per month. And that’s just
one bill.

In fact, as I write this letter I am literally facing a stack of unpaid
bills. Our increased expenses, together with the holiday season (a
traditionally slow time for us) and the effect of having the nation's
attention on the election process to the exclusion of other matters, has all
combined to produce a near-lethal effect on us. If we cannot pay these
bills, we will lose heat, electrical power, phone service, and even the
building itself – in other words our lifeline as a functioning organization.
Including these bills, our note on the home where we run our Emancipation
Program, and other operational expenses, we must raise over $10,000 per
month to operate – and that’s just the bare necessities.

I am asking you, as a good friend to the organization, to please help us to
cover these bills. We need your help more than ever. Yes, we could use a
financial gift from you. Even better would be a monthly contribution to
this unique, worthwhile organization, which would sustain us in an ongoing,
predictable way.

Could you please send us a check today, for the largest gift you are able to
afford? Or make a donation and a monthly pledge of $25, $50, $100, $1,000,
or whatever you are able to do. B.O.N.D. is a 501 (c) (3) nonprofit
organization, and your contributions are tax-deductible to the extent
allowable by law.

Send your check or money order to B.O.N.D., P.O. Box 35090, Los Angeles, CA
90035. You can make a direct credit card (MasterCard/Visa) donation to us
by calling (800) 411-BOND (2663).

Another way you can help right now is to order copies of my new book as
Christmas presents. Buying 5 books for family, friends, and neighbors costs
$100, saves a trip to the mall, helps us financially, gives people a great
introduction to B.O.N.D., and gets the truth out -- all at the same time –
not bad!

We simply must raise the money to cover our expenses and keep B.O.N.D.
operating. Yes, I personally will not stop telling the truth, counseling
whom I can, and striking fear into our enemies. But B.O.N.D. as an
organization would cease to operate on any kind of scale that would be
effective in this critical fight for the very soul of our country. This is
not the time for us to run out of gas.

But it’s up to you, not me. Please respond today with the most generous
gift possible, and consider making a monthly pledge to B.O.N.D. to help us
do the work we were sent to do.

Thank you and God Bless,

Rev. Jesse Lee Peterson

Founder and President

Interesting. So he allegedly described CBS's white management as blacks? Is
this from the same crowd that wants to ban the word "niggardly"?

Touchy, Touchy. Someone call the PC Police to go and beat Rather
senseless. He may have said something that people end with an ism.
Then again with people railing about specism in the upcoming movie
Planet of the Apes (I shit you not) it doesn't surprise me anymore.
