Out of all of the tribute artists, I believe that Lou Vuto sings the most like
Elvis. Not only does he sound exactly like Elvis, but he also possesses a
similar humility and overall kindness.

I think Trent Carlini put on one of the best shows I've ever seen.
Also Mike Vegas in NY state. But there are so many that to rate the
best would be futile. Every guy that is good has there regional
fanbase.
The question should be who has the best gigs and management.

I agree, I have seen a lot of guys doing the Elvis show. Some sound pretty
good and the audiance likes them while others are just terrible and don't
look at all like Elvis but, these are these ones getting the gigs because
they have better managment. These are also the guys that don't really like
Elvis they just do it for the money. I on the otherhand, while I do enjoy
the paying gigs do it out of love of the music and a lot of my shows are for
charity. So, again the question isn't as much is the best sound alike but,
who cares the most about what he does.

Just my take on it,
Jimmy

It seems the most popular ones (general
crowd pleasers) are not necessarily
the ones who sound "just" like Elvis or look "just"
like him, but that have the whole package - similar
looks, voice and all the right moves.

Allen is not hearing impaired! I have heard Jimmy Ellis perform many
Elvis songs on CD such as Lead Me Guide Me - Seperate Ways and Are You
Sincere. Anyone that has not heard that last song that i listed should
give it a listen then come back and say he dont sound a lot like
Elvis--If you can. I can tell his voice on many songs but on some he is
so close that it is eerie and i am talking about many of the recorded
songs he did that are newer than the ones that are found on the
boxset.---MIKE

That's been the problem on this ng. No one can say what they feel
without taking some crap from smeone else for it. Allen's hearing is
just fine and Jimmy Ellis DOES sound a lot like Elvis. So much so that
when I play him aound people, they will always swar it IS Elvis. No one
needs to make smart-assed remarks about that. As a longtime Elvis fan, I
can tell that it's not him, but the average person can't. And heis the
best I've ever heard at being a soundalike. Rick

This sure holds true considering the many people that go ga-ga over Ronny
McDowwell. "He sounds just like him" they say. The fact remain the he does
not. Nor did Jimmy Ellis (Though he is much closer) As I've said before I
liked Jimmy Ellis' singing but, it is the distinctive aspect that so much
intrigues me. As for R.M. why do they always choose him for movie and TV
sound tracks. There are so many that are closer than that. Hell, why not
have the actors lipsink to the real thing. The recordings are still just as
good.

Everyone has a favorite that "looks" or "Sounds" "Just like" Elvis making
the arguement for who's best pretty much pointless. I have been told that I
look and sound closer to Elvis than the poeple going to my show have ever
seen. These same people wouldn't even recognize me on the street. Most of
the deception is suggestive. Not on the part of the entertainer but, in the
mind of the audiance. They want to see Elvis up there so, they do.

Well, I have been listening to guys that do a true tribute. These are the
ones that you don't here as much about because they turn down a lot of the
jobs that would be degrading. I myself was asked to be on a commercial
eating jelly doughnuts. That kind of thing is just plain silly. I know of
another guy who was wanted to wear a padded suit to look lika a 500 pound
Elvis and he refused. I like the ones that are sincere and not out for a
buck. That's why I like Doug Church. I also like a guy named Keith Henderson
that performs all over but, lives locally here in NC. Another one you
probably nerver heard of is Tim Bunn great performer but, does not do the
silly impersonator crap. Eddie Miles is ok, he is at least a good respectful
entertainer. Doesn't look like Elvis nor sound much like him but, he is a
decent guy. As for Lou Vuto, unless he's improved in the last three years
he's a big damn joke. I heard he is a good and kind man from several people
but, he still aint worth my time to go 400 miles to see him. Nothing about
him other than the songs he's singing reminds me of Elvis.

Another great Elvis performer is Russ Howe but, I have never seen him live
and don't know where he's gotten to.

Actually Jimmy, I could never understand why they always used Ronnie
Mcdowell either. I might add that as everyone can see from my previous
posts i am also a Jimmy Ellis fan and own several of his CDs, but not
because he sang Elvis but because he performed many songs that Elvis
never sang and thats what really got me interested in his music in the

Yes there is a lot of difference. I actually prefer Jimmy on some songs. But
he can't compete overall. And what's all this jealousy about Ronnie Mcdowell?
He does It Hurts me, Puppet on a String and Seperate Ways to a T. Elvis
sounded the most like Ellis during the 68 special.

>Hi Allen,
No argument here. Jimmy is one of the best. Actually in my opinion what
makes he and Ronnie the best is exactly the fact that they are not
impersonators. The best thing about Ellis is the fact that he naturally sings
like Elvis. My point is if youre really an Ellis fan you give him credit for
his own voice and sound. I CAN tell the difference. The best thing about
Mcdowell is that he can get away from sounding like Elvis and have a sound all
his own. His 50's and 60's remakes of other artists like Conway Twitty and
others are fantastic. He can also do great vocal tributes to others like
George Jones and Merle Haggard. Allen, Ive heard the song of which you speak
and I love it. But I can tell it is Jimmy Ellis and not Elvis. As it should
be. It is a Jimmy Ellis song and he should be getting credit for it, not some
marketeer and a big ? mark. And I'll tell you once again that the voice print
that you speak of was later done by several other experts that said that it
lead back to one man and one man only : Jimmy Ellis. There are many patterns
of his speech that would give away who it is. Just a good ear without a voice
print can tell you that. Let's give Jimmy Ellis the credit he desearves and
stop comparing him to Elvis.

Here's somethin I'll agree with you and Alan on. Yes they are damned good.
But not at sounding just like Elvis. Jimmy sounds like Jimmy on each and every
one of these cuts. AND he puts his own energy and style into them. I
appreciate Jimmy doing Non Elvis songs more than the Elvis ones. It DOES give
you that certain feeling of Hey this might have been a song Elvis would have
done. But they are clearly Jimmy. Doug Church, Jesse Aron and Ronnie
Mcdowell all sound better at sounding like Elvis. Problem is most people only
relate to the 70's Elvis which was a stronger deeper voice more similar to
Jimmys but most of his career was different. Ronnie Mcdowell sounds so much
better on Blue Moon of Kentucky and I'm sure Doug and Jesse would emulate that
feeling as well. Alan is right once again that Jimmy is NOT and impersonator.
He doesnt try to sound like Elvis, he just does. Although I believe if he had
wanted to he could have sounded differently. When Ronnie does Elvis thats just
what he does. ELVIS! But when he is himself he is noone but Ronnie Mcdowell.

I saw somewhere that an impersonator was charging $95 per person for his

What I like and feel the ones that get the furthest are guys who are most like
Elvis. The whole package...... looks, voice, movements. Thats what made Elvis
what he was, the WHOLE package. Michael Vegas, Travis Morris and Jay Allan
come to mind. TLC...........

when it comes to elvis soundalikes noone has ever sounded exactly like
elvis. but thats not the point. the point is who is the closest? who
can make you wonder? who can sound so much like elvis that maybe you
think its an alternet cutt? well here is my list for best ever not
neccessarily in order. orion jimmy ellis, jesse aron, myself, ral
donner at times. doug church, sivle nora whoever he is, and ive been
told a guy named jamie kelley is real good.. but after these the talent
level drops off quiet a bit as far as just sounding like elvis. oh yea
elvis wade and tony roi are pretty good also.
maybe there is no such thing as a best, because everyone has there own
favorite.
but Elvis will always be #1 .

I totally agree. I have seen so many tributes to Elvis, i lost count long ago,
but i can say without a doubt Lou is the most humble and sincere of them all.
He gives it his all, is a great ENTERTAINER ( not many are) and has a heart of
gold. He told me himself how much love he has for that man.. he is an ACTOR
during that show..doesnt prance around thinking he's elvis...and his world
doesnt revolve around that... he's truly one of the most caring human beings
ive ever know...

I have seen Trent. He put on a good show but his personality ruins him.

The best I have seen is Daniel Young from Georgia. His talents go beyond words,
so does his looks.

think he's fabulous, as far as his personality ive talked to him a few times
and he's always been a perfect gentlemen, and seemed very sincere. His show is
very well done, and very respectful to Elvis and his stage show. He has a very
close resemblance to Elvis, im not a very big supporter of "impersonators" or
"tribute artists" or whatever they all call themselves, but I do highly
recommend him.

The cocky attitude is what turns most Elvis fans off of these guys. Not all
are like that.

"impersonators" or
>"tribute artists" or whatever they all call themselves,

For those who don't know there is a big difference between an impersontor
and a tribute artist. You only have to go to a few shows to find out.
Impersontors for the most part are not Elvis fans. They do it for the money
and what little bit of local fame that follows. Impersontors could care less
about preserving Elvis' image. they are the ones you see on the tacky TV
commercials eating jelly doughnuts or quivering and girating for no apperant
purpose. They are also the guys who wear those god awful wigs and fake
sideburns, twenty dollar rented flimsy ass jumpsuits that look like crap,
and only know the words to maybe ten songs which they do over and over and
over. I have yet to see an impersonator I liked as a performer although they
may be alright guys in other circles.

A tribute artist is just that. He pays tribute to Elvis (or whoever the case
may be) by singing his songs on stage. Recreating the feel of what Elvis did
in concert so that the ones who never got to see Elvis can leave knowing
just that much more about the man. They give information about various
topics during the show pertaining to Elvis. Tribute artists are more
caring than impersontors and would never do anything to make the fans think
badly of Elvis' image as an entertainer. They all don't sound like Elvis
but, that is why its called a tribute. They walk off stage go home and are
themselves, impersonators talk all the time as if they were Elvis, even in
there personal lives. I know a lot of these guys personally and can tell you
that above all else they are Elvis fans but, live their own lives.

This is just something I've been wanting to get off my chest for a long
time. I can't stand it when people generalise what we do. A lot of guys that
call themselves impersonators do so because that is what the public thinks.
A lot of "tribute artist" are nothing more than impersonators trying to
sound more sincere.

Hi ELVIS Friends,
To me an impersonator(Who I don't care for) is one who only sings the hits
of the person they are trying to impersonate. They try too much to act and
do them that it comes out too fake.Tribute artist or soundalike are ones
who can sound like others but chose to songs other then who they sound somewhat
like.OH they may do a few songs just to please the crowd or do a tribute
show a few times a year but they don't always do hits of who they sound like.
They show they have other talents.Like I've said before I like to go see
someone put on a good show nomatter who they sound like or not thats who
I become fans of not becouse they sound like someone else I just happen to like.

Trent Carlini's (and every other impersonator's) life story
:

They have all seen Elvisone or more times and thought :"I
want to be as famous and adored by so many fans as he does.
How do I get to that point? Ah, I know, I put on a suit
like his, sing his songs and I will be famous!. What!?!?
Elvis died? Ah, that's need, then I have the chance to take
over his fans."
Unfortantely for the impersonators it doesn't work that way.
Although there are always some retards who go see them and
even worse,buy their albums.
I think impersonators are all escaped from madhouses and
should be brought back a.s.a.p.

Victor

When I lived in Chicago I went to an Elvis Tribute show. It was the first time
I havd ever heard of Carlini and he was real good!.A month or so later my
friend from work invited me to his birthday party. He said his wife Connie was
going to have her cousin over who turned out to be Trent Carlini. As the night
progressed I asked him if he wanted me to go home and get my Fender strat ,
microphone and speakers, I did. Everyone at the party pulled up chairs at
waited for him to begin to sing.I think he had the guitar and started with
Hound Dog, then he was fiddlin with Don't Cry Daddy, but was having trouble
with the chords. I took over the guitar and we went into Mystery Train /Tiger
man.We then did Long Tall Sally. We went into Jaiulhouse Rock and he thought I
was playing it in too low of a key and joked he was sounding like a cow or
something. Then we did probably our best song"His latest Flame".I don't recal
if we did Little Sister or any others. Anyway everyone loved the little
backyard show and I felt like I was in the twilite zone. It was great. We
became friends. I went to see him at other shows, like at the festibles they
had in the towns etc.I would meet him before he went on.He say" my main man"
One time he introduced me to DJ Fontana. The back up band he had at the time was
the Ambassadors. The leader of the band took my number and called me up on
night to do a light show at some club he was playing at. That was great
too, because I new when to flash at the precise moments .Another time he asked
me to tell Trent not to give away some Elvis clock onstage because he felt that
was'nt right.I explained this to Trent and he never gave it away.I was invited
to go to another show where first saw him at. He was to come onstage on a
Harley. The band leader called me to go and do something I dont recall. But it
started to feel a little weird suddenly in this impersonator world. I did'nt go
to that show at the Holiday Star Theater and I think that was the last time I
had any connection to the band or him. But it was neat for a while.I wish him
the best.We did hit if off well.

I ordered Trent's Video from his website and I thaught he was pretty good. I like the way he explores diferrent stages of Elvis' carreer. Although I have "heard" better, his actual performance is hard to beat. I think he really loves what he does and it shows in his singing. He is better with the sixties material (ie: movies songs) than the seventies stuff. All in all it was worth the twenty bucks for the video. It wasn't like watching a video of an "impersonator" more like a re-enacted documenterary. If you order the video it takes a long time to receive, I waited almost two months for mine. His site is http://thedreamking.com

By the way, he is said to look a lot like Elvis but, I didn't think he did. He was a nice looking dud though, the ladies are sure to love him. He keeps up a great appearance. As far as looking like Elvis, ya' know hollywood make up and lighting does wonders for an image. Bottom line is: I like him!!!

Doe's anyone know if Doug Church has a website? I have seen pics of him on the net. I haven't seen him in a while but, I see he's finally bit the bullet and dyed his air jet-black. ( he had dark brown in the early ninties)
