Hi, I have always wondered in "This Is Elvis" how they recorded "Kung Fu
Fighting". It appears to have been written FOR the movie, as it doesn't
appear possible that the Kung Fu moves and the music could line up like
that. What's the story behind that and the group's name. Judy

Judy,

Kung Foo Fighting was a big top 40 hit and had nothing to do with Elvis. They
just used the song for the movie to fit the scene.

I travelled to London to see the world premier of the movie and was horrified
when this came on. If You Talk In Your Sleep would have been ideal. Someone
should have been shot for that.

Now you know only too well what he said.

That was the funny thing - seeing it in the cinema, uncensored, and with it
being the premiere of the movie, there were journalists there and a large
number of people who weren't fans.

When he came out with the famous words, I broke into screeching laughter and
embarassed the woman I had gone with and who had thought I was taking her to
London for a day out - she didn't last long.

Wow, the string has disintegrated to the lowly depths of some man's
mind!
Getting back to KUNG FU FIGHTING, I guess then that they edited the
footage they had to match the music. I know the song was popular, but
coouldn't remember who the artist was. Great film editing then!

Carl Douglas did "Kung Fu Fighting" I agree with Ian in that "If You Talk In Your Sleep"
would have been nice and Elvis would have liked it.

Judy, you've obviously missed the point totally.

The above phrase is what Elvis says in This Is Elvis before it was cleaned up
for consumption by middle america to (I assume) Harra overdubbing 'She could
raise the dead'.

Personally, I liked the scene in its original form because it showed what a
filthy mouth Elvis had on him (as did Julian's subsequent quote from On Tour -
is that overdubbed now too?). I think the other side of Elvis it showed was
the show-off in him - he specifically made the point of dragging (from memory)
Red over to the camera to say it. Wetheimer said in DC last month that he'd
done a bit of a show-off thing in the train to attract attention from the two
girls when he had the panda, as they weren't noticing him.

That's just part of the guy and something we all have to accept - just listen
to the Hurt lyrics for an extended version.

And as for exploring the lowly depths of my mind - just drop me an Email and we
can do it together :)

No I think it was crap. I think the movie came out in '81 and think the
single came out in '76 so it was totally out of place then and it's worse now.

Hi Paul,

I first got a bootleg copy in '81 and then the first official release
which included the dirty bits. Taped over them for the 150 minute version
so no longer have it.

I agree Ian. Maybe I'm sick, but for some reason I get a kick out of
hearing Elvis curse. I guess it's because I grew up believing Elvis was
pure, and now we have proof he was human after all.

Greg,

if that's what gets you going, it's a shame I didn't have a tape recorder going
for all those 24 years, you would have got your jollies for the rest of your
life. He could verbally peel the paint off a wall. And yes, i enjoyed hearing
it and joining in too. After all, I was brought up in the streets of NY.

Oh so now someone is signing my name (this is Judy) for me. I do get the point.
The string changed from a discussion of Elvis karate music to a discussion of
getting good head and it shows how it disintegrated due to the stream of
consciousness of YOU guys minds! Why don't you start your own topic on Elvis
dirty mouth!! Judy
