Never heard of that one. What have you heard about it?

Spelling on The Stone was an album put out by L.S. Records, a division of
Curb Records, back around 1988. It is not Elvis Presley. Hot band playing
on the tracks, but clearly not our Elvis. The singers name, if I remember,
is Dan Willis.
It's a surprisingly solid record, if you can get past what the purpose of
the record was...to make people think Elvis was alive. I loved the songs
Hit The Bricks, and Outside Looking In. The singer is all right, but hushed
in a lot of parts, I suppose in an attempt at making people unsure of who it
is singing. I've heard that Lee Stoller was behind this record, with
Christy Lane.
As for how you can get it, it's kinda rare. I have seen it in bins, but
aside from that, I don't know. Any questions, ask away! :-)

You mean Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller? I seriously doubt they would involve
themselves with such a scam. The thought of Christy Lane being involved in
anything possibly related to deceiving people into thinking Elvis faked his
death...well, why should it be surprising? Considering her career has pretty
much consisted of her ubiquitous TV albums, all featuring her version of Kris
Kristofferson's horrible song, "One Day At A Time," perhaps she felt she needed
to make money from another source once those TV album sales started to dwindle.
(After all, when people started emulating Elvis, shooting out their TV sets
every time a Christy Lane commercial appeared, you'd think she would've gotten
the hint, but oh no, not the 70s/80s country version of Kathy Lee Gifford!)

Yea. Not one of Kris' better tunes. lol
I think Kris has written some good songs though. Me and Bobby Mcgee is a
classic, especially Janis' version. The song To Beat The Devil is a great
song. My favorite version being the one by Johnny Cash. The songs Elvis
covered, Help Me Make It Through The Night & For The Good Times, were okay,
but another song of his that Elvis wanted to cover--Sunday Morning Coming
Down--is an even better tune. Sadly, Elvis never recorded it. I would
imagine the controversial lyrics are the reason. This info comes from Elvis
Presley A Life In Music - The Complete Recording Sessions which is based on
production notes, interviews with producers, technicians, just about every
musician Elvis worked with, employees of RCA, Sam Phillips, Charlie Hodge,
Members of the MM (Red West, Lamar Fike, Jerry Shilling,) a few members of
CPMS--Colonel Parker's Money Stooges--and the songwriters. The opinion about
the lyrics is not provided in the book, those are my own opinions. I found
the song on napster.
Kristofferson also wrote the gospel song, Why Me Lord which is a pure
pleasure to hear J. D. Sumner sing. Kristofferson's range was low as well,
but J. D. really shines on that song.

Since no artist is credited on this release, it is listed here by title. The
singer reportedly is Dan Willis.
As to it's availability on CD, I guess you have to contact Curb. Or a
specialist dealer.

It's a GREAT song. Can't believe any of you think it's a serious attempt to convince folks the man
is alive. It's humor, guys. But the humor is wonderful and the voice sounds more like Elvis than
Elvis.
Thanks for providing the name of the artist; none of the listings of it on the the share services
credit Dan Willis. If they credit anyone, it's Danny Mirror or Jimmy 'Orion' Ellis.

At the time "Stone" came out, I was writing a syndicated recording column
for the old Memphis Press-Scimitar. I investigated the whole story and came
up with the name of the artist.
Can't remember his name, but it wasn't Ellis . . . and I don't recall Willis
or Mirror being that name, either.
