Anybody know how Elvis hired/picked his maids?Did he interview them
personally? Were they recommended by other people? Were they around when
Gladys was still alive?Did Gladys hire any of them? Was there any that
ever ripped off the king?Did Elvis ever have to let any of them go???Who
was the Kings longest serving maid?..Marty,Bill?

On Audubon Drive Gladys hung the laundry to dry in front of the house. So I
doubt they hired any maid(s) when Gladys was still alive.

And then, Gladys moved to the large mansion on the hill with mop and bucket in
hand, washboard tied to her back and went to work making Elvis a home he could
be proud of.

Hi Jason,

They had maids at Graceland while Gladys was alive. I think she just wasn't
the type to have a maid.
I remember reading Alberta was their maid before they moved to Graceland and
after. I have never read anything about the hiring process prospective maids
went through. Seeing as how Elvis hired a great many people just because he
liked them; secretaries, bodyguards . . .

Right on!In the Elvis bios I've read they never go into any details about how the
maids came about. They allways talk about how close Elvis was to them, and how much
they cared for each other, but never an indepth history of how they all came onto
the scene.

My guess would be probably neither one.

Thanks for that information Marty.
Didn't Mary Jenkins write a book called "Beyond the Gates of Graceland?" And, I
think Nancy Rooks has a cookbook available.
Pauline is a lovely woman and I have seen her at numerous Elvis functions.

Elvis bought Gladys her first washing machine, a Bendix (the kind with the
rollers) when they lived at 1414 Getwell Street.

It was still there when David Isom, a businessman with a lot of rental
properties, bought it from the elderly lady who moved there after the Presleys
left. He sold it to a used appliance shop in Memphis, but now wishes he hadn't.

1. Yes, Alberta worked for Elvis and the Presleys at the Audubon Dr. Home and moved with them when they moved to Graceland. I met her there in May 1956.
2. He met Maggie when she was coming out of a car dealership and he was going in. She stayed with him until he passed away.
3. Nancy Rooks is still living and tells her stories often at Elvis events in Memphis.

According to the Elvis Gospel Fan Club: Alberta met Gladys Presley when they worked together at Britling Cafeteria, they became friends and Gladys later hired her when the Presley's moved into Audubon Drive. Alberta was a big help to Gladys, but Gladys liked to cook Elvis' meals herself. After Gladys was gone, Elvis would get Alberta (he called her Alberta V-05), to make one of his favourite meals of bacon, hash browns and black eyed peas. Alberta was the original maid and the only one to work both homes. It is believed that Alberta is the one who taught Mary Jenkins and other cooks how to fix Elvis’ favourite foods. Alberta was a sweet lady and Chelsea Brinkman says “What I love about this is that the Holmans and Presleys were the same humble, working class people. Gladys didn’t hire “help,” she hired her friend; one who I’m sure she grumbled with about long shifts, difficult customers, and heat. A good thing happened for Gladys, and she extended a hand to her trusted friend to join her.
