Just thought I'd ask that question as I've never read much about it. I
know he could play by 1956 (Million Dollar Quartet etc) but when did he
learn? Did Gladys buy him a piano to go along with the guitar? I think
not.

Some people just pick up and learn it that way and no Glady did not buy him a
piano because they couldnt afford it.

Good point - to that I add, maybe he learned to play the piano while
attending school or attending church or when he started recording or maybe a
neighbor had a piano, who didn't mind letting Elvis find his way on the
keyboards.

Did Elvis play piano in the studio while they were recording an album ??? Or
was it Glenn Hardin all the time (except when he left the band) ??

A to Z is full of omissions and errors. Unfortunately most fans don't know the
difference and think that book has everything and everything they have in there
is correct. Not so.

Usually it was Floyd Cramer or Shorty Long or Marvin Hughes or Dudley Brooks
Or Gordon Stoker!
On some tracks Elvis himself plays piano
For the Jailhouse rock soundtrack recordings Mike Stoller played piano

In 1968/1969 it was Don Randi and Bobby Wood
The 1969 live shows had Larry Muhoberac
From 1970 onwards it was in general Glen Hardin

All this information (and more!) is available in the recording sessions
books!

I recall reading recently that Floyd Cramer claimed to have never took a
formal lesson and never practiced.

Jerry Lee Lewis also never took a formal piano lesson in his life I don't
think, although maybe he did as a young man in Bible school before being
expelled?

Clarke,

Don't you think it's possible he taught himself to play the piano? Many people
have.

He may have watched someone and gotten a few tips, but really, it's not that
hard.

Actually, it's called playing by hear----my stepmom and my oldest daughter both
played by ear---a real talent. I can read music and play that way, but someone
who can sit down and play by ear can put a lot more expression and feeling into
their music, I think. (This is a personal opinion).

Are there any songs that Elvis played on the piano that are not in the
key of C? A talented musician (presumably we all can agree that Elvis
fulfills this requisite) can fairly quickly learn (self-teach)
sufficient keyboarding skills to accompany himself/herself.

It is not my intent to diminish Elvis' piano playing. Indeed, his
rhythmic and aural talents would have made him very quickly competent
on practically any instrument upon which he invested a bit of time.

Can anyone meaningfully assess the scope of Elvis' abilities on the
piano?

That's right. I once sent the authors a two-page single-spaced list of
corrections I noticed--and I'm sure there were many more that I didn't
notice--and never even got the courtesy of a reply. A funny one was the
license plate number of one of Elvis' cars. They printed the wrong license
plate number right next to the photo of the actual car with the correct license
number. That was the most minor one, though.
