Marty, '69 sessions question

Hey, Marty, like someone stated, there are lots of unimportant questions
posted here...
let me ask something which I have always deemed important, or rather,
fascinating.
Okay, Elvis had tonsillitis/laryngitis going on during the Moman
sessions... and, a lot of the songs showed off a certain raspy sound...
some of which could have also been due to maturing of the voice.
Personally, I liked that sound better.
Did Elvis ever comment about how his voice changed over the years?
Was he nervous about the scratchiness during the '69 sessions, or did he
himself seem to notice that it actually gave out a neat sound? I don't
think the '69 stuff would have been as captivating without the
raspiness.

Elvis wasn't concerned during the sessions but he was while he was sick at
home for a few days. He was OK when the sessions resumed and he liked the
added raspiness.

As the years went by he enjoyed his voice getting stronger.

His voice sure got smoother in from '71 on.

Did he smoke cigarettes daily?

If not, given his addictive personality, I'd be surprised he wasn't a
nicotine fiend.

Hmmm - I know Elvis didn't smoke cigarettes, therefore he couldn't
have been a nic-fiend.

What I wonder about is.....at what point did Elvis come by cigarillos,
and how did that happen? Marty?

Seems odd given he was so anti-smoking. Is this perhaps one of those
"peer influence" things that someone mentioned in another thread?

I wonder if if he even enjoyed it. I heard Red say in an interview
that despite smoking cigarillos, he never saw Elvis inhale anything.

I think we saw evidence of that later in the 70's in songs like Hurt,
when he would go back to the middle 8 and do the big vocal surge
again.

He knew of his power - mind blowing!

Who said Elvis was anti-smoking? He smoked cigarettes during the 50's and
60's.

He also smoked cigars during the 60's and 70's.

Most of us around him smoked also with no objection from him, although some
of us quit in 1969.

He just didn't like any girl he was with to smoke.

What he didn't like others to do had nothing to do what he did. "Do as I
say, not as I do!"

That's very interesting Marty. How much did Elvis smoke a day in the 50's
and 60's, a pack or less etc...Why did some of you quit in '69? I know that
is a hard habit to quit doing.

He smoked a little over a pack a day.

Lamar, Joe and I quit during the Memphis sessions at American on a spur of
the moment whim. Lamar and I have never smoked again, I don't think Joe has
but I'm not sure if he did after Elvis died.

What brand did Elvis prefer?

Incidentally.... I was at my neigborhood Las Vegas tobacco store buying
some cigars (about a month ago) and 2 sales reps from Hava-Tampa were
in the store. They were thrilled to see me buying a couple pcks of
Hava-Tampa. They offered me a few free packs. We struck up a
conversation and I informed them that Elvis Presley enjoyed that brand
and it was even mentioned on the back of an Elvis bubble gum card.
They were thrilled at this info and cave me a case of cigars by the time
I left the store.

Cigars are not totally safe... but they are not nearly as harmful as
cigarettes.
