I was in an Elvis chat room today and someone in it said that the
black leather 68 special suit had to be cut to get Elvis out of it on
one occasion. does anyone know if this is true and also if the one at
graceland is the original.

If you think about it, Leather tightens when wet.......................hot
lights....Elvis must have felt like he was in a sauna. But God was he handsome
in that outfit!

And somebody else said that Elvis ejaculated in it. Come on,
experimenting with a little bit of talcum powder would be better than
ripping a leather suit that he needed to wear again.

Richard -

It's true he had to be cut out of it.

The suit wasn't ripped.

Carefully cut down the seams so it
could be easily stitched back together
again.

Got to agree, the ejaculation thing seems a little OTT !

The story I know is as follows: After the first show they drie-cleaned
the suit, and after the second cut him out since that suit would have
no use anymore. If the Graceland suit does not show any mark of
repairing, then it must be a different suit. I am not exactly sure
about my source: either a TV interview with Joe Esposito or Peter
Guralnick's account of the event.

I don't think Guralnick could have an account of the event since he was not
there.

I can tell you this. Kay and I were able to go to the reception at Graceland
after the premier of the Movie that Andrew Salt produced. When we got in the
Trophy Room there was a long rack with Elvis' clothes. Also on the rack were
several of Elvis' jumpsuits. Kay was going though them and all of the sudden
she said PAUL come here. It was the Black Leather Suit. It even had the little
leather wrist band hanging at the top of the hanger. I know Kay inspected the
suit thoroughly and it was all in one piece.

Even though you're being sarcastic, I'll say it. Andrew Solt, "This is
Elvis."

Now let's move on.

When I was at Graceland in '96, there was a sign in the trophy room
stating that the jacket/suit was on loan to the Rock & Roll Hall of
Fame. But I had already seen it a few years before as part of an Elvis
exhibit at a shopping mall in Chattanooga,
Tennessee. Dr. Hunt's(he delivered Elvis) papers and instruments were
also on display.

Actually, I was not being sarcastic.
I never knew the name of the producer of "This is Elvis"....
[gasp] and since the movie was not named and only referred to as The Movie, I
asked for details.

I even went and googled Andrew Salt and found no Elvis connection.

Now, we can move on.

Why were they letting people thumb through them?

I'd say this qualifies as an honest-to-goodness on topic, somewhat interesting
Elvis post.

Oh My,
Guy's please let this subject remain as decent as possible. Elvis perspired
under those hot lights, profusely at times.
No he did not like underwear, but I see nothing wrong in that!
He was a man, and it would be more likely to find normal human stains on any
clothing....especially from a female entertainer. This Ejaculation comment is
at best, nasty and disrespectful. He was performing, on stage not messing
around in bed or on a couch.......

With all due respect Paul,
It could have been a copy. However, if the best semstress available to Elvis
had repaired this leather outfit....It would be my guess that it would not have
been noticably "Fixed" but look just fine.

Somewhere, if I can find them, I have several photos of Elvis' Trophy Room as
it was when Elvis was alive. I'll ask Kay if she knows where they are and if I
find them I'll post then for you all to see.

The reason that they were letting people go though Elvis's clothes is the open
house was basicly for press people and they did not expect them to care much
about Elvis' clothes. After Kay made out with a couple of war hoops they took
notice and ask her to move on!

Elvis wore a suit of some kind under it. It is the only way it will come off.
You can see it a little on stage with the guys.

I believe he had more than one made. You don't film a television show like
that or a movie without backup wardrobe.

You didn't know Andrew Solt nor Malcom Leo?

Curiously, how long has it been since you watched "This is Elvis?"

Elvis did 4 shows in the leather suit. 2 sit-down shows on June 27 and 2
stand-up shows on June 29.

Here is what is stated in "A life in music" by Ernst Jorgensen about the
June 27 shows:
After the first show had wrapped a new audience was led in while Elvis
grabbed a shower backstage; he'd worked up such a sweat that Bill Belew had
to get his leather suit cleaned and pressed in the hour-long break between
shows.

But the comment is out there, and from a supposedly respected source,
so it warrants discussion.
