And came back smelling a bit fishy, no doubt.

Any chance of you converting to Islam any time soon Broadway? You seem
the type!
I'm just kidding.
Ok here is a question, for all the culturally aware people on the
newsgroup.
What connections, if any (but there are quite a few!), no matter how
trivial,
did Elvis have with the Muslim world?
Blair
Right off the top of my head: his friendship with Muhammad Ali, and
the movie Harum Scarum, in which he has to rescue a Muslim princess.
Chuck

Ali never brought up his Muslim faith to Elvis. I doubt Elvis even gave it
one thought when they were together.

The Red Sox are just trying to buy a championship. A Yankee fan should
be able to appreciate that.
By "Muslim world", I don't specifically mean the "Muslim faith".
I agree of course that Elvis would have had nothing to do, or have in
common, with the muslim faith.
However he does have some light, and albeit mostly trivial, links to
the greater muslim world.
Here's a couple of trivial ones, The Saudi Billionaire who tried to get
Elvis to perform at the Pyramids in Giza, which would have been Elvis'
biggest and most spectacular payday by far.
The song "Little Egypt"! (This is pushing it, I know)
But of course, as mentioned by chuck, here he is dressed like an arab!
A costume he wore around the house for days in preparation for this
role:

Any more?
Blair
That made me think of reading years ago in probably "What Happened"
about a period in the 70's where Elvis went around wearing turbans. I
think there was an incident in a karate studio where he was wearing one
and some of the karate students were discussing the fact that Elvis was
stoned or on something. I have also seen a picture of him from Vegas
in around probably 1974 where he is sitting down wearing one. I wish
all my old books weren't packed away.
Garry
Just playing Blair's little trivia game.
Chuck
Oh, Jim,
Did I say not to buy? I'm just pointing out the obsession. Dice-K
barely made the papers here.
But, now that you mention it- they're sort of like the Bankees Jr!
The Cards didn't have any $106 Mil pitchers, nor the White Sox the year
before.
The money's nice, but, clearly not the guarantee of a ring or even the
pennant.
That's an amatuer's myth that all the guys who can't measure up to to
the playoff teams like to spit out.
Champions win rings
Aint it fun?! I'm having a blast!
Here's one for the purists, didn't Elvis meet the President and First
Lady of Indonesia?
Who of course would have been muslims?
Blair
True, and like Steinbrenner and now Henry believe, money buys champions.
I'm sick of the lot of them. 52 million for a kid to throw a baseball,
retarrrrrded!
Only in (the US part of) America ;-)

The whole face of the game is peeling from these salaries that are
getting thrown around this year for lethargic and mediocre players.
Years back, DiMaggio was being interviewed at The Stadium and the
interviewer asked Joe what his thoughts were on the new (single)
million dollar contracts some guys were now getting while Joe DiMaggio
topped out at $100,000 and Joe said there was nothing wrong with a
player getting what he can, but, he should at least play like he did.
Everyone complains about how much athletes make, but how much do the
owners make? Does anyone complain about how Elvis got millions for what
he did or that McCartney is worth a billion because he was good with a
melody?
And it's not like this is anything new. DiMaggio might have topped out
at 100k, but what was the average worker in America making at the time?
Also, let's not forget Babe Ruth's reply to the question about him
making more than the President of the United States: "I had a better year."
What bothers me are the owners who make a ton of money every year and
refuse to put it back into their teams. That's more of a slap in the
face to their fans than over paying an mediocre player.
Bill
You're right about the baseball welfare collecting bastards like the
Glass family and those other jackoffs in Florida, however, Dice-K's
dough is coming out of your pocket whether you watch on cable or catch
a game or two a year at Fenway.
And mosty, whether he's everything they hope he is or he sucks.
Overpaying mediocre players is a big deal.
My pedestrian little argument gets picked apart easily, but, I really
don't want to see a day at the park turn into any more an upscale
experience than what it already has (I'll bet the new stadium in 2009
will bring $40 bleachers/upper deck).
The luxury box crowd- ugh, pretty soon that's all you'll find in the
stands.
