(As we know Elvis had an enormous wardrobe, both private and professional,
consisting for a great deal of one of a kind items. The guys at I.C. Costume
Company (Bill Belew, Ciro Romano, Gene Doucette e.o.) designed and
manufactured his stage attire but also a lot of his street clothes. As far as
his private wardrobe is concerned what was the routine?
Did Elvis go to I.C. Costume Company in LA now and then for fittings and to
order new clothes?
Had Elvis the designers make what he wanted according to his wishes or did
the designers come up with certain ideas for new clothes which he approved
(or not)?
I believe that you, Marty, did also some designing for Elvis so maybe you
were familiar with his sartorial ("What???!!" Elvis said in Houston 1970)
habits.
Thanks,
J.B.

J.B.

I designed his wardrobe for a couple of movies with Elvis' input.

As for his street clothes, in L.A. we bought clothes for him at places like
Fred Segal, when Fred was just starting out with a little store on Santa Monica
Blvd.. Now he's big and is one of THE businesses in L.A.. Also a small store
on Sunset Blvd. called DeVoss which is no longer there. There was another
famous place on Sunset and Vine called Sy Devore that many movie stars shopped
at also.

In Memphis, he bought clothes at times from Lansky Brothers.

I read somewhere that old Sy Devore was quoted saying, "Elvis never wore
underwear".......
How did he know?
ha, ha...but never mentions which side he 'dressed'....

Is this business still around?

Thanks for your reply, Marty.
You didn't mention I.C. Costume Company in your answer.
Does this mean he didn't go there for his street clothes at all?

He was right. Elvis didn't wear underwear.

Sy knew that because when he sold clothes he both fitted the clothes and saw
the men change clothes to do so.

In the 40's, 50's and part of the 60's, his was THE place to buy clothes for
the movie stars.

in a thin white jumpsuit and you could CLEARLY see his jockey shorts

That was not jockey shorts and he did not wear underwear under his street
clothes.

He wore dancer's briefs under his jumpsuits.

Anyhow, here are a couple of pictures where his undies are clearly visible.
And of course we all remember his army induction pictures, so I didn't

Hemmmmmmm (clearing throat) ... Maybe he didn't when not performing because,
in the CBS Special of one of his last shows, one can see the outline of
underwear (briefs) under the jumpsuit.

I'll bet "it just came up", DutchBoy.
But seriously, the reason Marty knows so much about Elvis's underwear (or,
should I say, lack thereof) is that one time he and Elvis were changing into
their swim trunks together and Marty happened to get a look at a little-seen
uncut Elvis feature that, according to many ladies, should have won Elvis an
Academy Award.

LET ME MAKE THIS PERFECTLY CLEAR ONE MORE TIME SO EVERYONE CAN UNDERSTAND.

Elvis wore stretch dancer's brief under his jumpsuits. He did that for a
couple of reasons. When he stretched or moved around the material would be
irritating if he didn't wear anything. Sometimes when he did his karate leg
stretches on stage his pants would split because they were so tight and he
might be embarrassed when they split if he was bare underneath. Because the
jumpsuits were so tight, if he didn't wear the briefs, Elvis Junior would be
accented against the suit. He wouldn't allow that just as he thought that was
the wrong thing for Tom Jones to do.
And last but not least, because the suits were so tight it made it a bit easier
for him to slide into them.

AND ONCE MORE, HE DID NOT WEAR UNDERWEAR UNDER HIS NORMAL STREET CLOTHES EVERY
DAY. HE HADN'T WORN ANY IN THE OVER 20 YEARS I KNEW HIM.

Y'all enjoy yourselves.

Nope. As a matter of fact, although he had an accountant he had an IRS agent
do his tax forms each year.

That stupid move was done because Parker advised Elvis and his father that to
be sure he didn't get in trouble on his taxes that would be the best thing to
do. Elvis used to brag about that.

Parker would use the tax problems that former heavyweight champ Joe Louis had
in the past where he ended up broke.

Parker's main reason for that was he didn't want them investigating any
deductions Elvis made because it might be traced to him and therefore he would
be investigated and as an illegal alien he might have been exposed.

How foolish.

Dear Marty,

Elvis actually did get some of his street clothes from I.C. Costume Co,
although you may not remember he did.
I dug up some old interview with Bill Belew somewhere. This is what he had
to say about non-stage clothes he made for Elvis:"
Bill Belew: Of course , eventually it got to the point where I did do his
personal clothes for him. And he would call, like when he was going to his
bodyguard Sonny's wedding, he called and said he wanted a suit that was
really different. He'd just gotten his new cape and a cane that he liked a
lot, and he said:" Do a suit that has a cape. In Italy I had seen a photo of
some suit for a man that was done in fur, so I did a black broad-tail fur
suit. It's a black fur. It's very sheer and flat, so it looks like crushed
velvet but it's actually fur.And so we did the cape and lined it red. That
suit actually led to the capes being incorporated into the jumpsuits. And
occasionally also Priscilla would run across something she thought was
interesting and Elvis would call and say:"Could you come out to the house
and take a look at it and see if you can do anything with it?".
And so I would look at these things to see if we could incorporate it into
what we were doing to make it look different and new.
Question: About when was it that you started making his personal clothes?
Bill Belew: about 1971.
Question: I remember seeing a brown dress that he had that had the same
shoulder and collar as the jumpsuits.
Bill belew:Yeah, we did all those, he really liked that and I said: "It's an
identifying look for you and I think we should carry it over into the
offstage clothes as well"
He had a great build, but it was a very hard build to go out and to buy a
ready made suit for, because he had a 42 shouder and a 30 waist. So he found
that it was easier for him to have them made, I would design four or five
suits and put coordinate shirt fabrics with them, and take them to him and
he'd say something like:" Yeah, I like that one, give me two in that",
or"one in brown, two in blue" and so on.

That's nice to know what Bill said. However Sonny's wedding was in 1970.

And I'm a bit bewildered since Elvis didn't normally wear suits, why he would
have them made.

But I am not disputing what Belew says.

That black suit at Sonny's wedding did look like Velvet but I do not recall
that he wore a cape. I'm wondering if Belew has it mixed up with the time he
went to see Nixon.

I guess it's that time of year for your annual laundry day. You'd probably be
best hanging it outside to let that year's stank get out of them first.

You are right about Sonny's wedding.
That was end of December 1970 , but that is close to 1971.
The brown suit Bill is talking about is probably the one he wore at George
Klein's wedding nov./dec. 1970.
I've seen pictures of him wearing it.
Elvis didn't wear suits? Didn't he wear many high collared jackets and

Saundra,

In a way a bit amused, especially if I sense it is asked with a humorous
intent. In a way, that was the same kind of humor that Elvis and the guys had.
If I feel the person means no harm or is not a wise ass I have no problem with
it. To a point.

It's the questions where the questioner's negative or smart ass intent is
noticable or felt that I don't particularly care for.

yeah, but they were not suits, they were mix and match jackets and pants. But
he only wore that type of deal on infrequent occassions. Most times he wore
casual pants and high collared, flared sleeved shirts. When he did wear a
jacket to go out in the cold weather it usually was a casual zipper type jacket
or one that buttoned.

As I said, I'm not disputing what Belew said but I'm someone who saw him
virtually every day, especially when he was in Memphis and he normally did not
wear suits.

As a matter of fact I remember on a couple of occassions where he cleaned his
closet out of stuff he didn't wear and he threw a bunch of clothes on the floor
in a pile. He later mentioned to us that if anyone wanted any of it to go get
it before his father got them and hung them in the attic. His father saved
everything.

Richard Davis got six suits that way. Elvis had never worn the suits or maybe
once in years.

Angeline,

Trust me when I tell you. I wouldn't let you touch a damn thing on me

I wonder if anyone here knows anything about how the early-1970s 4 disk boxed
set "50 Gold Award Hits - The Other Sides" came to include envelopes containing
small pieces of fabric from Elvis' wardrobe?

I happen to own one such snippet of fabric. I've always assumed that the
Colonel probably thought up the idea as a way to get some more mileage out of
clothes that Elvis may have worn only once (such as while shooting films) or
that were so out of style that Elvis wouldn't ever be wearing them again in any
event.

Maybe Marty has info on this clever and profitable "recycling" scheme used by
RCA?

Angeline,
To continue on the subject, the other day, a friend asked me, if E' was
alive today and you would meet him, would you be as attracted to him as you
are now? Good question...he would be my father's age but I think I would
still find him attractive...that just got me thinking that, for us women, as
much as we love his voice, it's his "image" that we love the most...when we
see him in a movie or a concert like The Comeback, TTWII or Aloha, I don't
know for you but I'm so busy looking at him that I sometimes forget to
listen to his voice...he was very aware of this when he said that "the image
is one thing" and that "it's very hard to live up to an image"...I'm not
afraid to say that I became a fan because of his "image" when I first saw
"The Comeback" in 1981 (I was 14) and, then, I "fell in love" with his
voice...how about you? Do you feel the same way? And the other girls on AEK?
OK, now, I'll go look at some pics for your "study of the undies" ; ))

From memory:
It seems a truckload of clothes, mainly used in films, were under high
security driven to the RCA records manufacturing plant and again under high
security cut into pieces and put into special envelopes.
I once saw photo's and an article in a music magazine way back then.
The writer of the article wrote at the end something like "Please smell the
piece you have. Some of you may have a part of the inside leg".
I still have the original box-set and the pieces of clothing looks like
being from a shirt. And it looks miraculously new!

In the movies Elvis had clothes he only was wearing for a short while. The
photo's looked for real.
And some clothes, like in "Frankie and Johnny", were not suitable to wear
anywhere else than in a movie.
I have no idea if the clothes were rented or were made for the movie and
given to Elvis after the movie was finished.

It was just another gimmick to sell the same old songs again. I bought the
set
because there were lots of songs on it that were not available in real mono
anymore.
I could not care less if there was a piece of Elvis' clothing included! Even
if they would give away a complete Elvis suit I would not buy the LP if I
did have all the songs! But I do like promo t-shirts!

If there ever comes a day I feel I need to take any orders you give me
Saundra, I'll let you know.
As for your claim, I'm not going to waste time calling you a liar. I
guess it's just a big coincidence that it's always you who does it. In fact,
even when I posted my first post about Angeline's 'drew' comment, I said to
a friend of mine that was here with me,..."There's a woman on this NG who
will respond to this named Saundra, and then Angeline will insult me thru
her response." Not psychic vibes, mind you, just something that I've learned
through experience.
Whether it's happening due to any arrangement,...only you and Angeline
would know that, I guess. I certainly didn't expect you to say it was.
Do I have a problem with it? Hell no! I've come to rely on it.
By the way, I have a friend named Sam Folger,...he's gonna be crushed
