I've always wanted to ask this question but never thought about it until
now. There was a movie released in 1981 staring Diane Lane (She was in
Murder at 1600 if anybody cares), Michael Lenard (Waltons) and it was a
story about a young cripple girl who gets Elvis Presley as a Pen Pal. There
is no Elvis actor in this movie, and it is a mystery when the movie took
place -- it should be early 1960's -- but in the final scene you see
pictures of the 70's Elvis on bubble gum cards. Is it loosely based on
something Elvis really did, or is it one of the only good movies about Elvis
that never happened?

I remember that movie when it was on TV the first time - and it was based on
the book which I did not read. The movie was based from the true story book.
According to the story - the girl never met Elvis in person - she really wanted
to so bad. I believe I read that the girl died a few years after the movie was
shown on TV. If they had a wish list then amybe Elvis would have meet her...It
was a beautiful story. Too bad there's no video tape on that movie.

Actually i have the movie on video, and i had the opportunity some years ago to
talk to the nurse(I think her name was Lena Canada,or something like that) she
told me that the movie was pretty close to what really happened and that she
still had all the letters Mariann

There's a great book out here in Sweden about Elvis, and that story is in there.
According to the book, (I don't have it (yet)), this little swedish girl called Karin was about 8 or 9 in the early sixties.
She was very ill, and also crippled, and kept to herself very much, saying almost nothing to nobody.
One of the nurses (Lena Canada) felt sorry for the girl and tried hard to make friends with her and gain her trust.
She discovered that Karin absolutely adored Elvis. One day when Karin was very low in spirit, she suggested that they would write a letter to Elvis, and that she (Lena) would help Karin do that. Karin was beside herself with enthusiasm, and Lena thought: "Oh my God! What have I done? She'll be devastated if she doesn't get a reply!"
But Karin was confident, she believed in Elvis. But the weeks went by and no answer, and Karin got more and more depressed. Lena began sending letters and phoning Graceland, and eventually got to speak with Elvis himself!
She explained everything to Elvis, who told them to send the letters in a certain colour so that the staff could find it and give it to him. So Elvis got around to sending short, but sincere letters to Karin. They were sometimes far apart, but they came.
Can you imagine the happiness in the little girls heart when she received those letters? It brought tears to my eyes reading about it. She eventuallly died with a smile, holding the recent letter in her hand...

I think it's a truly beautiful story, and just one example of why Elvis is still loved so dearly by so many.
He gave all his fans so many moments of happiness.

Well, if we're talking about the same girl, I have difficulty believing it, since that funeral must have been here in Sweden. But, if you know something that I don't, please share it, I curious of hearing more about it.

Have a happy (day),

Well Allen,
The book I read had an interview with Lena Canada herself (who wrote the book which the film is based on), and according to this interview she apparently moved from Sweden to the US to be married and got the name Lena Canada, and she wrote the story years later, after Elvis had died, when she heard all the badmouthing of him. She wanted to tell about the wonderful side of Elvis through this true story that she had been a part of.
Since she wrote it while living in the US, she probably set the story to happen over there, while it in reality happened back in Sweden. I believe this story, because it makes sense.

> Well Allen,

Hi Tommy,
I'll go back and read my 1st press of the book but it's not in Sweden I just watched
the movie with my girlfriend last week. In the movie it shows USA albums,
trading cards & magazines.YES the woman who played in the movie was from Swenden.

Elvis died August 1977 and this was made into a movie in 1980. I remember seeing this movie as a kid with my mom. It became an instant favorite. Unfortunately, I have to pull it up on YouTube to show my husband and kids. But it’s a great movie! What is interesting is this movie was released in 1980 and Diane Lane made Cotton Club (released in 1984) a short four years later. What a contrast of characters she played in such a short time!
