There's nothing wrong with celebrating
one's own ethnic heritage ( or someone else's)
However, a community is not necessarily defined
by the ethnic heritage of its population. A community
is defined by what it will stands together for to act
as one for the common good. In the Polish revolution
for democracy it was called Solidarity. In the French
Revolution it was calle fraternity/brotherhood.
Even family, language and culture may not be enough
to hold a community together - things like
economics, human rights, and religion can
a community/region apart. Often it takes an outside
invader or a major disaster, to motivate a community
to solidarity, e.g. Ben Franklin commented to
his fellow representatives when signing the USA
Declaration of Independence that "We need
to hang together, or we shall surely hang separately."
A community can be defined simply as a
group of neighbors fighting to keep a
nearby park from being sold off to a developer
to make a shopping mall.

I believe that Obama was referring to how the mass mainstream
media often like to identify Obama is the first black president
(via the one drop rule) rather than say he's mulatto or bi-racial
or mixed. Obama is 1/2 white european and 1/2 african/kenyan
with respect to heritage. Persons of multi-racial heritage of
which includes some african heritage often have to deal with
being labeled as black, e.g. Tiger Woods the pro golfer.
Persons with multi-racial heritage which does not include african
heritiage (e.g. mixture of native american and european
or asian and european) often identifies as white and not with
with their respective minority ethnic hertiage ( e.g. actor
Keanu Reeves is identified as a white actor but he
is actually 1/2 english 1/4 chinese 1/4 hawaiian).
ISTM the USA will not probably have a public healthcare
option until the USA has a major public health disaster/epidemic
where a significant portion of the population dies from lack
of adequate healthcare. Until then it is going to be
every person for him or her self.
