Wild, naturally-evolving forests are an essential
component of the biosphere's life support system.
Aside from providing innumerable services to
humanity, forests fulfill the vital functions
of preserving wildlife habitat, stabilizing
the Earth's climate, protecting watersheds,
and maintaining soil productivity. They are
home to most of the world's vast array of life forms.
Everyone must aggressively do their part.
If we do not, history will be justifiably
unkind to us. We must demand what is needed
to support all life on Earth.
Rainforest Action Network's mission is to protect
the Earth's rainforests and support the rights
of their inhabitants through education,
grassroots organizing, and non-violent

WORKCAMPS (Volunteer Projects) in AFRICA and WORLDWIDE
OPEN TO ALL
Introduction: The projects generally last 2 - 3
weeks and consist of about 10 - 20 volunteers
drawn from a number of countries. Projects are
often in remote areas, in regions where local
people may have minimal opportunity for meeting
others from different countries. The volunteer
groups bring new ideas and experiences into
communities, providing a stimulus for ongoing
work. The individual volunteers benefit from
the interaction both within the group and with
the local communities. The experience gives
them the opportunity to travel to another
country, use their time productively and
make a positive contribution to the local
community. They also have the chance to
widen their horizons through meeting
and learning from each other and local people.

Projects variously center around/involve: reforestation,

VOLUNTEER PROJECTS IN AFRICA ~ VOLONTARIAT en Afrique
The least expensive, and probably the best way, to experience
Africa.
All are welcome, from teens to senior citizens. Volunteers come
from
all corners of the globe.
To apply, write directly to any of the Voluntary organizations
listed
below, requesting application, project schedule, and all
information.
(Or, apply through one of the intermediary organizations given
below,
such as Service Civil International [SCI] or Friends/Quakers).
Visit the Web sites, first, and read about volunteering. It may
or
may not be for you.
Participation fees are VERY LOW, starting at as little as $75 to
$150 (includes
room and board). Volunteers are encouraged to participate
in more than one project, and to arrange to receive academic
credit from
their schools for their participation (7 - 12 units, being
suggested).
Discounted Airfare Tips
Volunteers are responsible for making their own round-trip
arrangements
to Africa. Leave no stone unturned in your search for discounted
fare.
NYC to Accra-Ghana round-trip fares can be found for as little
as $650 to $1200...on rare occasion, even less. Check the Ghana
Airways
office in NYC, 800-505-9991. Agencies to check : Dixon Travel,
718-294-2274; 917-762-9183;
Rahman at Aviation Travel, 212-244-5554; Expertravel,
exp...@africaonline.com.gh;
OGR Travel, o...@africaonline.com.gh; at Ticket Planet:, ask for
Nick or Max
( http://www.ticketplannet.com ), 800-799-8888, or E-mail

and most respected service organizations.

For instructions on how to apply to a volunteer
project sponsored by a voluntary organization in Africa,
please send your request to: VO...@BigFoot.com
Or, please visit:
http://www.egroups.com/files/VOLU-Volunteers
http://www.egroups.com/members/VOLU-Volunteers
Write directly to the voluntary organizations
(located in many countries around Africa...find
addresses below) and obtain from them all details and
application.
HOW PARTICIPATION IN A VOLUNTARY PROJECT WORKS
Projects last 1, 2, 3 and 4 weeks (some longer);
and are organized in the summer and winter (also,
some are sponsored in fall and spring).
Projects include: reforestation, agriculture,
building schools and clinics, computer
training, health, AIDS/HIV, women and infants,
environment, youth work, community development,
grassroots self-help.
Participants join with African communities and with
volunteers who hails from all corners of the globe.
ALL ARE INVITED; all ages. Students are encouraged to
arranage to receive academic credit from their schools for
their participation; recommended, from 7 to 12 units.
These voluntary workcamp projects provide an EXTRAORDINARY
vehicle for cross-cultural understanding, while actually
accomplishing something meaningful for African
communities.
Volunteers provide their own round trip travel to the
African country they will work in. Camp fees (covering
room and board) are minimal (each voluntary workcamps
program you write to will tell you what that fee is).
ALTERNATIVE WAY TO APPLY
Instead of writing directly to the voluntary organizations
in Africa, you may apply to a project through the intermediary
of
the Service Civil International; find all information at:

B A R R Y : The "(Still-)Forgotten" American Tourist in FRANCE
An African American tourist was wrongfully arrested shortly
after arriving
in France (accused of "association avec malfaiteur" - guilt by
association),
then held 20 months without trial, bail or opportunity to defend
himself, and finally -- in an absolute travesty of a trial --
was sentenced to 18 years without the possibility of appeal...
i.e., given a virtual "death sentence."
Still a young man, and now in his 7th year of his 18 year
sentence,
Barry would be nearly 50 years old if he survived to be released
in the year 2012.
US State Department: "hands tied"
Despite the fact that he is the victim of NUMEROUS Human Rights
violations, the response of the American Embassy and US State
Department to pleas for help, has been either mum or notably
curt and lackluster:
"The US Government cannot interfere in the judicial system of
another
sovereign power. Americans who travel abroad do so at their own
risk."

http://members.aol.com/FreeBarry1/index.html (Main site)
LETTER-WRITING
Help with a letter-writing campaign would be welcome. Barry will
soon pass his 7th consecutive birthday behind French prison
bars. Cards, messages and well wishes from the International
Community would surely help to lift his spirits and buoy up his
morale.
Prison address:
Barry B R A I M A H
8674 B-Sud 227
Centre Pen. de Clairvaux
10310 Ville sous La Ferte
FRANCE
Alternatively, messages for Barry can be E-mailed to us.
Prisoners do not
have E-mail or Web access in France, but we will print out your
message
and AirMail it to his address in France. E-mail your message to
us at:
BarryS...@starmail.com, FreeB...@aol.com
WHY WRITE?
French authorities monitor Barry's prison mail. Letters that he
receives therefore "register" on his behalf. They help put
authorities on
notice that they are being "watched."
Generally, the more the communication a prisoner has with the
outside world, the better he will be treated.
THE WRETCHED OF THE EARTH
For most of his time, Barry is isolated in a 6'X12' cell that is
too cramped even for him to stretch out his 6'3" (1m93) frame.
Prison conditions are deplorable, and only help to fuel a high
rate of
suicide and depression -- problems which go unattended to by
French authorities, despite the unending pleas for intervention.
At one point, Barry's weight dropped to 139 lbs, due to the
insipid prison diet, which was virtually bereft of protein and
fresh vegetables. Barry's meals usually consisted of a non-
descript
slop. Malnutrition, and consequent illness, help to fuel suicide
and depression among inmates, who in France are predominantly
and disproportionately North African, Arab, black African, West
Indian, from the French departments (islands) and foreign-born.
France has been severely condemned by the European Court and by
international Human Rights organizations for a persistent
pattern of Human Rights violations against non- whites,
minorities and foreigners.
J O I N . L I S T
A new list has been set up to follow this case and to explore
what we in the international community may be able to do to
help.
Human Rights monitors who visit Barry will post to the list the
results of their twice-monthly visits with Barry. Relevant
articles appearing in the French press on Human Rights and
prisoner issues, periodically will be translated and shared with
the list.

faced by African people.
VOLU is itself a Ghanaian-run organization, with strong
international links, including exchange
and reciprocal programs with other service and volunteer
organizations/agencies around the globe.

BACKGROUND READING

Artificial lake in Ghana. The lake is formed by the Akosombo Dam
which, begun in 1961 and
completed in 1965, dammed the Volta River
just south of Ajena and created a lake extending upstream from
the Akosombo Dam to Yapei,
beyond the former confluence of the Black
Volta and White Volta rivers.
With a storage capacity of 124,000,000
acre-feet (153,000,000,000 cubic m) of
water, Lake Volta is one of the largest
man-made lakes in the world. It is about
250 miles (400 km) long and covers 3,283
square miles (8,502 square km), or 3.6 percent of Ghana's area.
The lake's creation involved
the inundation of 15,000 homes and of 740
villages and the resettlement of 78,000
people. The lake is navigable and provides
a cheap route linking Ghana's northern savanna with the coast.
It also is a major fishing ground and provides irrigation water
for farmland in the dry Accra Plains lying immediately below the
damsite. The generating capacity of the dam's hydroelectric
power plant is 912 megawatts of
electricity; this power is used by the aluminum smelter located
at the port of Tema on the
Gulf of Guinea and supplies most of Ghana's
other electricity needs as well.

Rock-fill dam on the Volta River near Akosombo, Ghana, completed
in 1965 as part of the Volta River Project. Its construction was
jointly financed by the government of Ghana, the World Bank, the
United States, and the United Kingdom. The dam rises 440 feet
(134 m) above ground level and has a crest 2,201 feet (671 m)
wide and a volume of 10,451,000 cubic yards (7,991,000 cubic m).
The dam impounds Lake Volta.

Title: ENVIRONMENT-GHANA: Environmentalists Lock Horns Over Dam
By Isabella Gyau
ACCRA May 8 (IPS) - Deep in the hinterland of Ghana, among the
wind rustled bushes of the savanna belt and lying about 450
kilometres north-West of the capital Accra, is the Bui National
park.
Home to 150 endangered species of black African hippopotamus, a
number of elephants and other wild animals, thousands of
beautiful butterflies as well as rare species of medicinal
plants, the
future of the park and its habitats is now uncertain as the
government has decided to construct a dam through it.
The construction of the dam, which was announced earlier in
1999, by the Vice President of Ghana, John Atta Mills, is to
supplement Ghana's dwindling energy supply.
Ghana's main source of electricity has been the Akosombo Dam
located in South-East of the country which was constructed in
1966 by the first President Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, with some support
from the United States.
The water level in the dam has dropped so low that it has lost
almost half of its generating capacity, forcing the government
to look for other sources of energy.
The construction of the dam has, however, generated heated
debate between the government and environmental groups who say
the construction of the dam would do more harm than good.
During the Construction of the Akosombo, the majority of the
80,000 people who were displaced and relocated were not given
any form of compensation.
This resulted in the loss of land and livelihood as well as
diseases such as Bilharzia, problems which have not been solved
to this very day.
Several people who were displaced are still waiting for
compensation from the Volta River Authority who
are managers of the dam and the government.
It is against this background that environmental groups have
been fighting the government over the construction of the dam.
It is estimated that about 17,800 to 68,500 hectares of land
size would be affected depending upon the final decision taken
on the dam's elevation.
Critics also say a village, known as Dokokyina, situated within
the park, would also be submerged by the flood of the dam.

WORKCAMPS (Volunteer Projects) in Southern Africa
_____________________________________________________
MAKING A POSITIVE CONTRIBUTION TO A COMMUNITY
_____________________________________________________
ALL ARE WELCOME; ALL AGES (16 & up, generally)
Introduction: The projects generally last 2 - 3
weeks and consist of about 10 - 20 volunteers
drawn from a number of countries. Projects are
often in remote areas, in regions where local
people may have minimal opportunity for meeting
others from different countries. The volunteer
groups bring new ideas and experiences into
communities, providing a stimulus for ongoing
work. The individual volunteers benefit from
the interaction both within the group and with
the local communities. The experience gives
them the opportunity to travel to another
country, use their time productively and
make a positive contribution to the local
community. They also have the chance to
widen their horizons through meeting
and learning from each other and local people.

The Quaker Peace Centre Workcamps Project
The aim of the project is to facilitate the development of a
strong workcamp movement in South Africa. For this purpose, it
will offer workcamps, train workcamp leaders, and support
workcamp organisations.
What is a workcamp?
Workcamps offer volunteers an opportunity to work on a community
related project, including construction and renovation of
community facilities, conservation of the natural environment
and cultural heritage, and organising holiday activities for
disadvantaged groups. Where possible, volunteers live together
for the duration of the workcamp. Where this is not possible,
they live with families. The Quaker Peace Centre offers
international workcamps which are open to South Africans and
volunteers from around the world.
Benefits of workcamps
Development of self-esteem
Development of self-initiative
Intercultural learning
Community development
Community services
International peace and understanding
Volunteers
The Quaker Peace Centre aims to create a balance of volunteers
in terms of gender, ethnicity and nationality. For each workcamp
it will accept no more than 2 volunteers per country (other than
from South Africa) in order to achieve a great amount of
diversity.
Workcamps around the world
The Quaker Peace Centre can place volunteers in workcamps around
the world. Most of these take place in July and August.
Volunteers should apply in April as many of the workcamps are
very popular, and places are filled rather quickly.
Workcamps are offered in the following countries:
Albania
Armenia
Australia
Austria
Bangladesh
Belarus
Belgium
Bolivia
Bosnia
Brazil
Bulgaria
Burkina Faso
Canada
Chile
China
Costa Rica
Croatia

** C O S T S :
Volunteers need to pay for their own transport to and from the
workcamp, and should bring along some pocket money. Food and
accommodation are supplied free of charge.
The Quaker Peace Centre will negotiate with any international
workcamp organisation for South African volunteers to be exempt
from paying a participation fee.
The Quaker Peace Centre charges a participation fee of US$100 to
volunteers from OECD countries and countries where GDP per
capita is US$10 000 or higher. This fee is used for the training
of workcamp leaders and communication with international
workcamp organisations.
