I had a bit of a panic this morning. A couple of weeks (maybe a month
now - tempus fugit etc) back I bought a new machine, and this morning it
crashed, on restarting it was asking (it can be incredibly frustrating
trying to talk through the procedures down the phone with your mother!)
for a valid boot device, which suggested to me that the hard disk had
had a fit. So I talked our way into the bios and only the DVD was
there. How do you get a bios (or bios style) list of attached drives
for sata hard disks?

Turning it off and back on again didn't rectify the problem, but turning
it off - leaving it for a couple of hours - and then turning it back on
did; at least for the time being, next time I am there I will take the
cover off and see if I can see any loose wires.

Two possibilities - dodgy BIOS, or the hard disk is on its way out.

Better not be as its effectively brand new.

Where do the drives show up bioswise?

It happens. But hard disk warranties are very good these days. If you can
find out what brand of HD it is, you should be able to fetch diagnostic
tools from their website to tell you if it's OK or failing.

It varies greatly between BIOSes.
