"Well, that didn't go as I planned," the Doctor said, as he
stalked back into the TARDIS.
"What were you doing?" asked Benny.
"Trying to adapt history. I've been visiting the most warlike
race in the galaxy, constantly waving blades in each others'
faces and challenging each other to fights. In a few hundred
years, they're going to spread across the galaxy and challenge
*everyone* to a fight."
"So what did you do?"
"I came up with the bright idea of teaching their leader
quarterstaff techniques. You know, fighting without bloodshed,
work off the agression. It seemed a good idea at the time."
The Doctor sighed
"He couldn't get the hang of it, or he wasn't interested?"
"Neither. He was interested all right. And he had the best
quarterstaff technique of anyone I've seen since that big
fella from Hathersage. But he seems to have missed the point.
When I left, he was designing a sort of bladed quarterstaff."
"What?"
"Exactly. Looked like a big scimtar blade with handles on the
back. Razor sharp. I told him, 'Kahless' I said, 'It'll never
catch on...'"

Heh heh... Very nice. Well thought-out, too. And is the 'big fella' who I
think he is?

Thank you.
I wish I hadn't specified who the companion was though,
because on re-reading it I suddenly thought "That's not Seven,
it's Ten!" (The Discworld one was written as Ten, but on re-
reading, I decided it sounded more like Eight...)

Probably; is the person you think he is notable for knocking a
guy in green tights off a bridge?
