Anybody got any idea where I can purchase Isopropyl Alcohol in the UK. Tried
local chemists, they all looked at me like I'm some shady drugs dealer or
something ;-). Maybe it's a DIY store thing. I've no idea (obviously) as
I've never bought it before.
I'm going to try the blotter method but need a solvent.
Any constructive advice gratefully received.
Thanks,
Dave.
p.s. Suppose acetone's an alternative but same query on that, where from?

Well, in the US it is also referred to as "Rubbing alcohol." Perhaps
it has a synonym on the other side of the pond too?

In the US it is available in 70% and 93% concentrations, and less
commonly 99% (which is the best to use for extractions). The 70%
is used for message (hence "rubbing"), where as the 90%+ concentrations
are used by diabetics to sterilize their syringes. If you're at the
chemist (pharmacist), take a look in the section for diabetics.

Probably don't want to go there. You can get it at hardware stores,
but you should distill it to remove the impurities, and most folks
are set up for boiling highly flammable liquids and collecting
highly flammable vapors! I've distilled acetone, and it kind-of
weirds me out..

Noted on the acetone. My one and only 'sniffing' experience was on acetone,
when I was a lad at school. We were painting and the jar of acetone was in
the paint store room. Some older hardcore lads suggested it. One and only
time! could just feel the old grey matter dissolving on contact ;-).

Regards the Isopropyl, I used to work in IT and we used it there to clean
tape deck heads etc. I guess it's the same stuff so could maybe try Maplins
or RS components. I'm sure I could get some there, or just get in touch with
my old colleagues ;-).

I think the chemists here are so restricted in what they can sell that if
you go in and ask for anything other than medicine on prescription, shampoo
or toothpaste they think you're 'up to something' and give you 'the stare',
usually reserved for naughty little boys by their mothers!!

I have to say, this is one reason why I'd love to be in the good ol'
USofA..that and the phat mountains for MTB'ing and snowboarding.

Thanks,
Dave.

You could always go the straight forward route...

"Hi mate! I'd like some 90%+ pure isopropyl alcohol"

(Giving you the naughty-boy look). "Why do you want it?"

"Making herbal extractions."

"Oh really? What kind of 'herbs?'"

"Salvia divinorum."

What you're doing is legal, after all.

That, and the fact that it's possible to walk down the street without
having your every action monitored (for a few months more, at least).
That whole London thing weirds me out..

I would hold off moving to the US for now. Our government seems to feel that
if they can't poke there nose in to every aspect of your life then they
can't protect you. Well I want to know who's is going to protect us from the
government. One interesting kind of off topic post. Fox news had a brief bit
one the final study of damage to the brain caused by use of pot and would
you believe it. There is none. Now there is a big surprise.

Unfortunately, his government feels the same way, and in some ways
the UK leads the US.

Hell, *all* governments feel that way, and it's only getting worse.
Little known fact: The Netherlands -- with one of the most progressive
(or at least tolerable) stances on recreational drug use -- also
has the highest per capita rate of phone taps. And for all their
talk, the US rarely taps phone lines (mostly because there have
been checks and balances to prevents it, but alas those are
disappearing quickly).

We're all fucked when it comes to civil and human rights.

Man, if you're in Waynesboro, you must have some pretty unpopular
opinions. That part of the valley tends to be pretty conservative...

you know the founders of the United States are probably rolling in
their graves right now. after all, ben franklin did say "They who
would give up an essential liberty for temporary security, deserve
neither liberty or security" and i'm not willing to give up my
security just in case someone might bomb a bus. after all, you are
supporting terrorism by buying drugs <sarcasm>

It's a good quote (I've used it myself), but did Franklin really
say it? I've seen it attributed to just about EVERY founding
father.

That's why, this 4th of July, I'm going to stand up against the
tyranny (and irony) of my government with a defiant act of civil
disobedience, and fire highly-illegal aerial fireworks into the
air, and I (and my son) are going to enjoy every minute of it. I'm
really looking forward to the mortars!

Sarcasm, yes, but it does point out the fact that when drugs
are declared illegal and immoral, one usually has to deal
with some unsavory people if one continues to use them. That's
one of the reasons that it is really best to grow your own.
