I think they are going to have to go some to beat the Irish at the
whiskey game. After all, the Irish invented the drink, and gave whiskey
its name. Well aged, single malt, triple distilled, pot still Irish is
the smoothest whiskey in the world.

I did have some wheat whiskey at McMenamins about a year ago. It was
interesting. I was going to have a second try, but the last time I was
there it was off the menu .

McMenamins had some "Dutch style" gin on the menu, so I tried that. As
a gin it was marginal. It was nothing like genevers, and nowhere near as
tasty. There are plenty of juniper berries in Eastern Oregon, but
apparently nobody who has a deft touch with the flavor. Bartenders
should love it. The juniper overwhelms everything, even tonic water.
They could cut the actual gin in a drink by 50% and people could still
taste it.

Pendleton whiskey is just imported Canadian, bottled in a boutique
bottle. Save your money and buy MacNaughton.

They sell whiskey, gin and brandy by the bottle at Edgefield. Beats the
hell out of Rebel Yell, Jack Daniels, Ezra Brooks, Thor's Hammer near as I
can remember.

When they re-legalize absinthe in the states, Oregon wineries could make
bank. Even the different types of wormwood grow here.

I will concede that the Oregon whiskies I have happened across didn't
immediately make me want to puke. As I mentioned, the wheat whiskey was
interesting. I wouldn't mind buying a bottle, but I'm not going to
drive 230 miles to do it. Edgefield is just a little out of my way...

Yeah, I remember hearing about how tough Tarragon is to grow. I planted
some in my herb garden, ignored it completely, and two years later was
picking pounds of the stuff. Artimisia species really seem to love the
Oregon climate.
